Suggestion to reduce ES-JH fatigue

by: John Howard

Thu Nov 03, 2011 at 14:42:03 PM EDT

Rob, could you make a rule that user comment signatures not mention another user? I think people are annoyed enough with me and ES without having to see my name at the bottom of every comment he makes. It surely creates a fatigue that wears everyone out and annoys everyone even more. I only made that comment once.

What do other users think? Do they like seeing that "white supremacy" mashed-up "quote" on every one of his comments?

Don't (0.00 / 0)
say stupid stuff like what you said and I quoted directly and you won't have to whine to mommy that people are quoting you directly.

....and don't play like I "mashed it up" in an attempt to decieve like you do any time you talk about me.  Don't put quotation marks around "quote" like I took something out of context that can be interpreted some other way.

You said exactly that.  You meant exactly that.

Own it.

I'll change it when/if I feel like it or when you say something else that's as equally absurd as owning a car is "nothing but white supremacy, white privilege, like my mom said"

"I acknowledge having racist and classist and sexist feelings of white male superiority." -John Howard

I didn't say exactly that (0.00 / 0)
you paraphrased and changed the context. I do not agree with that sentence and it shouldn't be attributed to me. I am asking for it to be removed, please.

I agree with the paragraph as I wrote it, in the context I wrote it, which was about California teen car culture and the Beach Boys bragging about having having the "pink slip, daddy" in Little Deuce Coupe. Here it is.

Having the "pink slip" means you own the car. And it is bragging. I guess it's the whole point of owning a car and having a license, to brag and feel superior to poor people. It's nothing but white supremacy, white privilege, like my mom said."

Note that I didn't say that "owing a car is nothing but white supremacy," I said "I guess" (which is a conversational cue that sets the context as light-hearted offhand musing) the whole point of owning a car and having a license is to brag and feel superior. And then I brought up my mom's story about growing up in Florida, when she was in a car with her friend and her friend's father saw a black guy driving a car and got all indignant, saying "they get behind the wheel and think they're just as good as everyone else." That kind of racism was alive and well in California in the 60's when the Beach Boys were the whitest group in the state, singing about the status boost of owning a car, and the privilege they sang about, the Fun Fun Fun, was white privilege. OK, that's the context of that statement. Neither my mom nor I were simply saying that owning a car is nothing but white privilege. That reduces it too much, those are not words that I would write, that isn't a statement that makes any sense to me.

But explaining myself again wasn't the purpose of this diary. I think that putting stuff that refers to other users in your signature is obnoxious and annoying and it would make a good rule to limit signatures to either your own words, or words from a public figure.

Look up (0.00 / 0)
the word "paraphrase" and educate yourself.  I directly quoted.  What I DID do is define what "It" of the "It's" was so readers would know what "It's" was referring to....and "It" is "owning a car"....

In the ONLY context there was.

You can try to add false ambiguity, by claiming some "I guess" nonsense, but you said "It's NOTHING but...".....which removes any "guess" from what you were saying.
You can try to claim you were talking about the 60s....but by saying "It's", while maligning my character numerous times, you were clearly talking about the present in using the present tense of the verb "to be"....It IS.....instead of talking about "it WAS".....

What you were doing way layout out numerous claims of me being a racist, white supremacist, poor-people hater....being an all around ass, like usual....and I took advantage of something absurdly asinine that you said and now you're whining about it.

The purpose of this diary is to bunch up your panties and whine to mommy.

Own it....and in the future, don't say patently absurd things and you won't have to whine about it.

"I acknowledge having racist and classist and sexist feelings of white male superiority." -John Howard

No, it referred to the "to brag and feel superior" (0.00 / 0)
I'm correcting for the record my feelings about the relationship between owning a car and white supremacy. I don't have a limit on words, or anything to hide, so I don't mind doing so. I do mind you continuing to attribute a statement that I don't agree with and doesn't make sense to me, after I have asked you to remove reference to me from your signature.

I think that when you scream bloody murder about how having a drivers license is a privilege, you are letting your underlying feelings of white supremacy show. I think those feelings are pretty universal for white people to have, still in this day and age which is much closer to the 60's than we admit (the same songs are playing on the radio, people are still "white" and "black"). One of the hallmarks of modern day white privilege and superiority is that people don't realize they are doing it, they say their own super smart brains make impossible to act stupidly. It's always other people who are being an ass. They don't deserve the privilege that is rightfully yours.

peddling full speed does not change what you said into what you're now saying.

Continuing to lie like an ass about me having feelings of supremacy is as absurd as you saying that owning a car is nothing but white supremacy.

You can stop being an ass any time you choose, but I will change my tagline WHEN I FREAKIN FEEL LIKE IT.

Your further attempts to paint me as a racist, white supremacist, Klansman only make me want to keep it there longer.

YOU said it.... YOU own it.

"I acknowledge having racist and classist and sexist feelings of white male superiority." -John Howard

Your leaps of logic are amazing... (0.00 / 0)
First, I'll agree with ES that he characterized your statement faithfully.  Even your rehashing of it proves he is correct.

Second, I am amazed at how you can twist something YOU believe into something the Beach Boys were (in your book).

You think that the Beach Boys singing about having a car was singing about white privilege?  Are you kidding?  It couldn't have been just about California Beach Culture/racing/girls, etc...

So, Commander Cody was singing about "white privilege"?  Jan & Dean...racists?  How about the Beatles...was "Drive My Car" a racist anthem?  (as an aside...http://www.digitalspy.com/music/news/a340575/the-beatles-refused-to-play-to-segregated-crowd-in-us.html)

I suppose Chuck Berry was channeling his inner self-hatred with "Jaguar And The Thunderbird ", right?  After all, driving and feeling superior to poor people IS a "white privilege" according to you and your mom.

How about Jackie Breston...his "Rocket 88" is the #2 car song of all time.  Was he writing about "white privilege"?  Was he writing about "feeling superior" (something you seem to imply only whitey can do)?

I could go on and on and on about how assinine you really are with this JH.  Not only to you ascribe feelings of racism to others, you write some dumb-assed story to back you up.  All it does is show how racist and classist YOU are.

You should think before you type.

[ Parent ]
He might have thought it was faithful (0.00 / 0)
but I told him that it isn't what I was trying to say, and I'm asking him to remove it. And he didn't, so that proves he wasn't trying to be faithful to my point.

It winds up being a ridiculous meaningless statement.

Yes, Chuck Berry made a calculated effort to appeal to white teens by singing about cars. Black musicians did get famous and show off their cars and liked to brag too.

I acknowledge having racist and classist and sexist feelings of white male superiority. It would be obnoxious of me to deny the privilege and entitlement I feel as a white male, the rightful heir to the English throne. It's obnoxious of ES and you to deny it too.

[ Parent ]
Unlike you... (0.00 / 0)
...I don't define myself as a "white male".

Hell....you don't know if either of us is white.

You're just a racist ass.

LOL - I could never get tired of listening to you two argue! : ) (5.00 / 3)
Seriously, I've called my roomate over to my lap top just to read some of your battles!  They're great!

Oh, don't worry, we'll still argue! (0.00 / 0)
Thanks RRRR. But there are some people who complain about our battles, they get tired of seeing our arguments all the time taking up space, especially when it is off topic. And that signature line is always off topic, and I think makes people sick of seeing my name. So when I leave a comment or make a diary and try to participate, people feel like I've already made ten comments that day and aren't in a welcoming mood to see my name come up again. It poisons the well. It's low.

[ Parent ]
You poison the well yourself... (0.00 / 0)
...what with all the wife-beating and alien watching I'm shocked you have time to post.

[ Parent ]
Perhaps I do poison the well (0.00 / 0)
I do sometimes refrain from commenting when I feel I've been annoying people with too much lately. Sometimes I post anyway, even though I think people are sick of seeing my name. So it's bad enough, you understand? We don't need to see it in every one of ES's stream of playground taunts. I think it is a low obnoxious annoying thing to do, to reference another user in your signature line, and I don't see how it contributes to a good site. Rob should just make a rule and ask ES to knock it off.

the JH also said he's a classist and a sexist as well.

Yet (0.00 / 0)
calling someone a racist white supremacist isn't obnoxious.

Keep it up....only makes me keep it there longer.

OWN IT

"I acknowledge having racist and classist and sexist feelings of white male superiority." -John Howard

No (0.00 / 0)
"we" won't.  There is nothing left to argue.  You cannot absorb facts into your knowledge base and move on...always coming back to the same ole mischaracterizations of others and the same ole lack of understanding of the Constitution and rights.

Everything is circular and I've covered it all numerous times.

Don't play like "we" bring your boogyman into every off-topic conversation....YOU do.

Still whining about my tagline??  Get over it and don't say stupid things like what I directly quoted.

Own it.

Simple Solution. (0.00 / 0)
You guys just start your own thread at the beginning of each week, then duke it out in the margins to your hearts content.

This way you don't annoy everyone by hijacking posts, and we don't have to step around it all the time.

What about my suggestion to Rob? (0.00 / 0)
I only hijack CVIM's posts. When I post in other people's diaries I make points to the subject of the thread. Sometimes my point includes the underlying problem of libertarian transhumanists hijacking both parties and prioritizing biotech research funding over everything else, but that's because it's relevant to the issues being raised. If it wasn't, I wouldn't be posting it.

Tell me, doesn't it annoy you to see my name come up in everyone of ES's comments? Wouldn't it be a nicer environment if you didn't have to see that all the time?

Rob could make a nice simple rule: No referencing other users in comment signatures (and I think it should include BMG users, sorry RRRR but I don't like seeing SomervilleTom's quote all the time either). Rob can edit our bio's and signature lines.

[ Parent ]
BS (0.00 / 0)
You insert your boogymen into evey thread you can, no matter how absurd the connection.

It would be a nicer environment if you didn't lie about me consistently, call me a racist white supremacist....or say stupid things like what's in my tagline.

That you can't own your own words is not surprising.

Yeah, I think you're right.  And I bet there may be others on this blog that feel the same way.

I'll take it down and figure out a better way to make the same point.

Thanks for the feedback John
