Thanksgiving - Our Uniquely American Day of Reflection

by: BillHudak

Wed Nov 23, 2011 at 13:14:24 PM EST

(Welcome Back Candidate Hudak
- promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno
)

As I continue my campaign for Congress, MA 6th, it is important to keep in mind the reasons why.

Tomorrow, we reflect and continue the tradition of our forefathers, giving thanks with our families and friends for the magnificent bounty which America alone has to offer.  And it is that bounty we must never take for granted, and for which we must be grateful, always.

Long before we were the "United" States, our land provided the world's first opportunity to truly live as free people.  The Pilgrims understood freedom and risked their lives to attain it.  Our Revolutionary War patriots fought and died to achieve it, creating a new Constitution to define it.  The Civil War served to solidify it. And through two World Wars and more in our own lifetimes, our direct decedents and members of our own families fought and died, and continue to fight and die, to protect it.

And with these sacrifices our freedom has survived and our families have grown and prospered.

Our distinctive Thanksgiving Holiday gives us, and the world, pause to remember that.  Like nowhere else on earth.  As we lead by example, by the grace of God, and with the heart of our uniquely American pride. With eternal gratitude to those who came before.

Even during this era as we face grave economic, social, and geopolitical challenges, this essential day of reflection must serve as a reminder of who we must remain - the world's beacon of hope; exceptional; the shining City on a Hill serving as a symbol of who we are.

It is with this sense of deep and unbounded national love and pride that I, my wife Angela, and our children Trey and Joanie, give Thanks this day.  And we extend our heart-felt Thanksgiving wish to you and yours.

So too, as you earnestly reflect, give Thanks, and share this day with those closest to you, it is our hope, and trust, that you will also find the inner peace and strength which our American National Day of Thanks reminds us is so vital to our irreplaceable way of life.

Happy Thanksgiving.

We all can be thankful that we live in the greatest country in the world... (1.67 / 3)
...but you present a warp mythology more designed to shape a partisan political agenda, then celebrate the greatness of our country.  You liberally sprinkle words and phrases like, "America alone has to offer"; "world's first opportunity"; "distinctive" or the real heart of your point, "exceptional".  Thanksgiving is a variation of harvest festivals ancestors of the Pilgrims celebrated for centuries and is not an original concept unique to us.  By framing it as "exceptional" is historically inaccurate and is designed to fuel the dangerous rightwing agenda of American Exceptionalism--a term that has been stolen and bastardized from the brilliant observations of a Frenchman.

You may feel you waxed poetic by celebrating the "freedom" loving values of the Pilgrims, who indeed did risk their lives to practice their religion, but also condemned and banished those who sought the same protections for their religious values.

The history of this great country is so more complex than the third-grade ode you present.  Given the simplicity and absence of historical truths, it gives pause to those who realize the problems of today are more complex than the black and white of elementary school mythologies and is hardly the level of intellectual discourse we need in Congress.

MALARKEY!  What a wet towel.

actually, much like Christmas.... (5.00 / 2)
Thanksgiving has morphed into a Holiday that barely resembles its original intented reason for celebration. And yes, folklore has certainly distorted many historical facts, right down to the symbolic turkey many of us eat (as supposedly it was not even an indigenous species in 1620).

It seems that Thanksgiving for many has actually evolved simply in to its two root words definition; Thanks & Giving. And I don't have any problem with that!

Irrespective of what you want to be thankful for, your family, health, Country, or simply enjoying friends you haven't seen, anything! The Day simply makes many of us take pause, remember others, and apreciate the things or people that have made our lives happy!

So, historical accuracy and politics aside, I hope you enjoy Thanksgiving Mr. Hudak and Mr. Malarkey, and everyone, everywhere, for whatever reason or anyhow you so choose!

Ya know what I am thankful for Malarkey? (5.00 / 1)
That your douchebag friend CVIM is gone....  And if I am lucky enough to be granted a second wish at Christmas time then you too will be gone from RMG...

We are headed for a 'Fiscal Cliff' and the country just elected a dope whose motto is 'Forward'.

If someone tries to claim Christmas as an example of... (0.00 / 0)

I bet deep down inside you can't wait to throw a wet blanket on anyone who thinks America is exceptional (0.00 / 0)

Did you know the inspiration of Thanksgiving came from Iraq? (0.00 / 0)
William Bradford was reading his Bible, looking for inspiration as his flock faced another tough winter.  He read the story of the enslavement of the Jews by Nebuchadnezzar, and their lamentation of trying to keep faith - 'How will we sing the songs of the Lord in a strange land?'

Many of the settlers missed England, and worried about surviving in the strangeness of the colony.  Bradford remembered how popular the harvest festivals had been 'back home' and thought that a holiday of thankfulness for the harvest would be better than dreading the coming frosts, and so declared the first Thanksgiving, to help his people sing the songs of the Lord in this strange land.

Happy Thanksgiving!
