Watch out Ernie Boch III, The Probation Probe May Be Expanding to Court Officers

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Tue Feb 21, 2012 at 08:39:54 AM EST

One of the widely talked about rumors in Massachusetts State Politics is who is Ernie Boch III, the prolific diarist on Blue Mass Group.  Many believe that he is a court officer of the General Court, aka the legislature.  If so, this latest piece from David Frank of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, may cause him and other Court Officers to pause.

It appears that a federal grand jury investigating the hiring and promotion practices of the state's Probation Department may have expanded its reach to court officers.

Multiple sources familiar with the investigation, who all spoke on the condition of anonymity, say a grand jury acting under the direction of U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz has subpoenaed court officers to testify in the case.

"I'm told they are working from the bottom up," says one State House source. "But I have no doubt that it's expanded beyond probation."

The news comes at a time when prosecutors are expected to call former House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi to the grand jury.

The expanding probe may catch more people in its net.  As State House News said last week it's "like a tell tale heart beating under the golden dome".

Of Course! (0.00 / 0)
That's the job for the democratic hacks who can't read!

I am glad that it seems like they are expanding the probe to other departments, but ... (0.00 / 0)
The cynic in me believes that expanding the investigation is simply a way of elongating the process in order to keep indictments from occurring until after November.

Timing is Critical (5.00 / 2)
In terms of electoral strategy and tactics if one were to be cynical.

However, with the possibility of indictments of sitting legislators makes it critical that MassGOP have candidates on the ballot in as many races as possible.  If the indictments come down at the right time it could lead to some opportunities for picking up seats.  This can only happen if there is a Republican on the ballot.

Stalling on indictments (5.00 / 1)
...  On the other hand, until indictments are handed down, there is a pall over the entire Legislature.

If there are ANY innocents bystanders there, they will want this done ASAP to clear their own names.

In any case, there is NO reason that any seat should go uncontested in 2012.

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
ConsEph and MikeJBenn are completely correct when it comes to candidates. Who knows how far this investigation will go and when indictments will come? Who knows how damaging this will be to Democrats in the minds of the voters?

All politics is local, and in Massachusetts 2012 could actually be a better year for GOP candidates than 2010. In 2012, there was a national trend for the GOP and against Democrats that never materialized in MA for a number of reasons. However, in 2012, we could have a Presidential candidate from MA, a popular incumbent US Senator, a Lt. Governor in the news for all the wrong reason, and more indicted Democrats in the State House.

Clarification (0.00 / 0)
There are two kinds of court officers.

There are the guys who sit in the House and Senate chambers all day doing nothing. Okay, not nothing, when there's a roll call, they call The 21st Amendment.

Then there are the court officers who sit inside of the courtrooms during sessions and occasionally have to quell a minor disturbance.

I'm guessing it's those guys who'd know what goes on with probation.

Both (0.00 / 0)
However, there many more trial court officers than "great and general court" officers.
