Brown Campaign accepts Kennedy Institute Debate

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Mon Jun 18, 2012 at 15:25:01 PM EDT

The Scott Brown campaign has accepted the idea, in principle, of a debate at the Kennedy Institute for the Senate.  Here is a copy of the letter sent to the Kennedy Institute today, by Brown Campaign Manager Jim Barnett.

June 18, 2012
Dear Ms. McBirney:

First, let me say how much we appreciate the invitation from Vicki Kennedy to participate in a debate at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. Ever since we received Mrs. Kennedy's invitation, we have been giving it serious consideration and thought. We are hopeful that you will agree to conditions that will allow us to accept.

As the President of the Board of Trustees, Vicki Kennedy assured us in her June 8 letter that the Kennedy Institute is "non-partisan" and would therefore be an appropriate setting for a Senate debate.  In order to proceed, we need to know that in keeping with the spirit of neutrality expressed in Vicki Kennedy's letter that she will not endorse or otherwise get involved in this race.

Furthermore, while we accept Tom Brokaw as a moderator, we prefer debates with local media sponsors, not out-of-state cable networks with a reputation for political advocacy. We are confident that issue can be easily addressed as there are a number of Massachusetts media outlets that would be willing to sponsor a debate such as the one you are proposing for the Kennedy Institute, and I'm sure they would be pleased to have Mr. Brokaw as moderator.

We look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Jim Barnett
Campaign Manager
Scott Brown for U.S. Senate

Negotiation through Press Releases (0.00 / 1)
Scott Brown's actions with this debate show clearly that he is lying when he claims to be a bipartisan, independent, problem solver.

If Scott Brown wants to discuss something with EMK Institute, he should just pick up the phone.   Instead, he publicly issues a sickenly sweetly worded letter with ultimatums.

Scott Brown shows that he's more interested in making headlines than in making progress.

How pathetic of you. (5.00 / 2)
As if anything in this contrived partisan offer from Vicky was neutral or bi-partisan.  Give it a rest.  Brown's response was right on the money.  Fight fire with fire, and play politics with politics.  Grow a pair.

Oh yes (5.00 / 1)
Clearly Scott Brown is being partisan by asking the head of a non-partisan foundation to remain neutral in a U.S. Senate race she wished to host a debate in.  That is the very definition of partisan I hear.

Give me a break.  You are just upset that once again, Scott Brown out maneuvered the left in Massachusetts.

Non-partisan? (0.00 / 0)
I'm sure they have to say that for some tax code reason....but the EMK Institute would hold a non-partisan debate with a non-partisan host and moderator and questions in the manner that Lucy tauntingly holds a football...just like most debates held by self-proclaimed non-partisans.

What is a local media sponsor? (0.00 / 0)
Does that mean Fox Boston is out or in?
