Five things you should know, Today, July 11, 2012

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Wed Jul 11, 2012 at 07:31:34 AM EDT

1. Overrides expected today

The Massachusetts legislature is expected to take up overrides of Governor Patrick's vetoes today.  On deck are at least the EBT overrides.  Speaking of Vetoes, State Representative Kevin Murphy had some strong words for Deval Patrick in today's Lowell Sun.  Murphy told the Sun, "indicative of Gov. Patrick's lack of commitment to the city of Lowell."

Murphy went on to say, "Maybe he ought to venture outside his tony suburb of Milton and see what we need here."

2. Jonah Goldberg in Town

Michael Graham is hosting Jonah Goldberg at Cafe Escadrille in Burlington tonight.  You can still get tickets at 969BostonTalks.com.  In addition, Michael is having some bloggers over for lunch and we'll be livestreaming that starting at 1:00 PM.

3.  Fourth District Radio Debate on Talk 1200

Next Tuesday, July 17, 2012 the three candidates in the Republican Primary for the Fourth Congressional district will be debating on Talk 1200 AM's Jeff Katz show.  The debate will start at 9:00 AM and will be livestreamed with video.

4.  Alleged Henriquez victim's mother says not the first time

The mother of Dorchester Democratic State Representative Carlos Henriquez's victim said that Sunday morning's alleged incident was not the first time.  Channel 5 has the story.

Gonzalves mother said she warned her daughter to stay away from him.

"He's very mean, the way he treated Kathy before, the way he talked to her," she said.

The police report shows Gonzalves, who had dated Henriquez, told officials he was upset because she wanted to stay at home.

Her mother said she heard her yelling and ran outside.

"She was screaming, she was saying like 'Get out of here,' she was screaming. So that's why I ran (after the car)," her mother said.

5. We're number 28!

For the past four years the Patrick administration has used the CNBC rankings of "business friendly states" to highlight our competitiveness.  Critics have stated that the metric relied too heavily on the number of college graduates available for work.  This year the Commonwealth dropped from 6th place to 28th.  Perhaps reflecting that, as Andrew Sum of Northeastern University says there is no correlation between job growth and the educational attainment of a state's workforce.  Texas tops the list.

Interesting how #5 played out... (0.00 / 0)
Earlier this week, CNBC released the #2 through #9 ranking states.  State House News picked up the story and shared some commentary that since we were #6 in last year's rankings, and since we weren't #2-#9 that there was a shot we were in the running for #1.

Then the full rankings came out.

Ouch.

Ranking #28 overall and #49 in the cost of doing business has GOT to act as a wake-up call for the Legislature!!!

Months ago the GOP caucus introduced a comprehensive jobs bill.  More than a month ago the House passed an Economic Development job which included a few components of the GOP jobs package but not nearly enough.  The Senate still has not passed their version of the bill.  So here we are 20 days from the end of formal legislative sessions with NO specific jobs bill to show in a 2-year session.

Please reach out to your Senator and implore them to move on the Economic Development bill.  It's not great, but half a loaf is better than nothing at all, and half a loaf is all we have time left to tackle.

Can you write up a quick post with a link to the bill?  I'll front page it.
