Pioneer hosted a great event yesterday, with a packed audience, to hear Lawrence Superintendent Jeff Riley outline plans for school reform, and a distinguished panel of education experts including Phoenix Charter's Beth Anderson, AFT-MA's Tom Gosnell, SABIS' Jose Afonso, and BU Professor Charles Glenn. Check out the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune's coverage, our Facebook photo album, and Jim Stergios' tribute to Milton Friedman, school choice and free market pioneer, whose foundation helped sponsor the annual event on what would have been Friedman's 100th birthday. We'll have video soon for those who missed it. Lawrence Eagle-Tribune reporter Mark Vogler noted, " The push for charter schools playing a greater role in the state's overall educational opportunities for children – particularly in Lawrence – resonated as a key theme yesterday." The Massachusetts Legislature passed what has been called "Health Reform 2.0" this week, but as we've argued, it is anything but. Read Pioneer's full statement here, and more commentary by our health care policy director, Josh Archambault, in Politico, Reuters, Associated Press, Boston Globe, and Boston Herald, to name a few. Read Pioneer in Manhattan Institute's summer issue of City Journal on how Massachusetts' high-quality academic standards made its schools the best in the country (& how the Common Core national standards movement is reversing that success). Read more about the Governor's latest education task force, “Integrating College and Career Readiness” (ICCR), which aims to close achievement gaps by lowering academic expectations, write Jamie Gass and Charlie Chieppo in the MetroWest Daily News.
