Warren's daughter funds plan to force state to mail welfare recipients voter registration forms

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

(Update: The Herald has picked up on the Warren link.  Read it Here

Update 2: 91 news outlets have picked up on the tie between Warren's daughter and this lawsuit, first reported at Red Mass Group.

- promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno)

Elizabeth Warren's daughter Amelia Warren Tyagi is leaving nothing to chance in the 2012 election for her mother.  Warren Tyagi, the chair of the George Soros funded Demos Foundation, has bankrolled, through Demos, former members of ACORN in their pursuit to have the Commonwealth's welfare agency perform a voter registration drive.  The Boston Herald has the story, although they missed the Warren familial connection.

The state has mailed out voter registration letters to nearly 500,000 welfare recipients, in a push sparked by a group led by former ACORN bigwigs that critics say is a naked bid to boost Democrats at the polls in November.

The letters, mailed last month by the state's Department of Transitional Assistance, went out as Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren have been locked in a neck-and-neck race.

The welfare system's get-out-the-vote push came in response to a suit brought by New England United for Justice (NEU4J), which is led by three former leaders of the controversial Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now. ACORN was disbanded in 2010 amid a voter fraud scandal.

Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno :: Warren's daughter funds plan to force state to mail welfare recipients voter registration forms
The article goes on to show that NEU4J was aided financially in this effort by Warren Tyagi's organization Demos.

NEU4J worked in concert with Demos, a liberal group leading a national charge to enroll welfare recipients. Demos - which was started in the 1990s and lists Barack Obama on its founding board of directors - has sued nine states, including the battlegrounds of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Nevada, according to Demos lawyer Lisa Danetz.

Cases are still pending in Nevada, Pennsylvania and Louisiana, which is fighting the suit. Settlements have been reached in Ohio, Missouri, New Mexico, Indiana and Georgia. Meanwhile, North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado and Mississippi have all agreed to comply without being sued.

So Elizabeth Warren's daughter is using the power of the Commonwealth to register voters for her mother.  What a great system we live in.

You also missed key parts of the story (0.00 / 0)
Per David Bernstein, this action was the result of a lawsuit brought by the federal gov't against the state for failing to adhere to the Motor-voter law that requires that the Dept. of Transitional Assistance provide voter registration forms to people who come seeking services (much as the RMV is required to do).

Turns out, the Mass. DTA wasn't routinely doing that. In other words, the state was systematically failing to register thousands upon thousands of welfare recipients. Only when taken to court -- and with great pressure to act in time for the August 17 registration deadline for the state primary -- did state officials agree to try to make good by sending out letters and other public outreach. That effort, needless to say, is likely to be far less effective than the in-person assistance the state was supposed to do in the first place.

What a great system we live in, where states and elected officials are required to follow the law.

We should go back to the old system (5.00 / 1)
Where you had to show up to town hall, your birth certificate or other proof of citizenship in hand to register. I proudly did that on my 18th birthday.

Odd you should say that (0.00 / 0)
On they day I turned 18 I did two things:

I registered for selective service at the local PO and then walked across the street to town hall and registered to vote.

I didn't have to say anything more complex than "This is me" and show them a piece of mail with my name on it to prove residency.  Essentially all I demonstrated was that at one time someone with a name lived at that address.  I didn't prove when, that I was the person, or that the person was a US citizen.  I could have said my name was 'current resident'.

We don't live in that great land yet.... (5.00 / 1)
Deval Patrick said he won't enforce the law requiring EBT recipients to stop buying booze, tattoos, and lottery tickets.

And Barack Obama said he won't enforce the law with respect to having federal law enforcement check immigration status for alleged criminals.

So its kind of a 'pick your own laws' type of state and federal government we live in.

Ed Markey is now the official 'cheapest' man on earth.  1.5 percent to charity while the average American gave 3 times as much...

But no comments about the actual substance? (0.00 / 0)
The alleged conspiracy doesn't exist. There's no grand scheme to rig the election by mass registering poor people. (Heaven forbid they should be encouraged to vote!)

The state is legally required to do this under a law that's been in place for nearly 20 years.

[ Parent ]
No but I have a comment about your comment (0.00 / 0)
Willful ignorance

It's all just a big coincidence right?  Mom is running for Senate and an ultra liberal connected to ultra liberal groups is using a state agency to conduct a tax payer funded voter registration drive?

And seriously.....do people really need to be encouraged to register to vote? These people are poor....not morons.

Is it possible to make to double digits in age and have no idea how the electoral process works?  My 12 year could register to vote and would know where to do it TODAY.

I'm sympathetic to the argument that newly sworn in citizens should be encouraged to register. But if one was born and raised here (and progressed beyond elementary school) and has no idea how to register they ought to be grateful there are no IQ or current events awareness requirements to vote....because clearly they would fail one or both.

So you oppose the NRVA? (0.00 / 0)
It doesn't really matter who brought the suit, or why. The facts are that the state wasn't doing what it was legally obligated to do to encourage voter registration among low-income people.

If the state had been doing its job the whole time, there wouldn't be a mailing happening now before the primary registration deadline.

[ Parent ]
In a word (5.00 / 2)
Yes

IT DOES MATTER WHO BOUGHT THE SUIT WHEN THE SENATE CANDIDATES CHILD HAS A HAND IN IT!  Are you that blind to what is a clearly a tainted motive?  Did they sue states where Mom isn't a senate candidate who have the same issue?

You cannot not make it out of any public or private school in the country (by grade 8 usually) without a sense of the voter registration process.  Those that want to vote find out how/where to register and do so.

I am opposed to motor/voter laws and any action that encourages potential voters to register by means other then there own initiative.  If you want to stand in town square and hand out cards begging people to register and directing them to the appropriate location have at it.

Have PSA's on radio and TV.

However....If you're standing there and  anyone can just sign a form with unverified info....yeah I have a problem with that.

If you want to make the case that geography is an issue (as is sometime the case in places like Texas) then perhaps mobile BOE (like a bookmobile) might be in order....but not private or gov't office (other than the the board of elections).

It amazes me how people with a liberal slant would never see the potential for fraud or misrepresentation if the subjects are poor/minority/disenfranchised, but they are all too willing to assume a corporation or wealthy person is screwing everyone any way they can.

The alleged violation (0.00 / 0)
From the complaint filed:

Data obtained from offices of the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance ("DTA") suggest that in at least 94.2% of their clients were not provided the voter registration services mandated
by Section 7 of the NVRA because they purportedly identified themselves as registered voters.  Given the Census Bureau's voter registration data, the statistical probability that over 94% of DTA clients are registered voters is essentially zero. DTA has recorded similarly incredible percentages of low income voter registrations every year since 2005.

So, DTA asks "are you registered?" Client says, yes.  DTA doesn't give them a registration form.

Seems right to me.

The lawsuit is saying that DTA has to do more than simply ask:  verify their "yes" somehow?  Take them by the hand to register?

Make them produce their voter ID card? Oh yeah, we don't have that.

An Easy Solution (0.00 / 0)
Just let people register on election day.  The right to vote shouldn't be subject to arbitrary bureaucratic deadlines anyway.

uh huh (0.00 / 0)
... but would they have to show ID then?

heh

Yes, there's an ID requirement for first time registration. (0.00 / 0)
Same day registration wouldn't change that.  The benefit of allowing any qualified citizen to vote on election day is that the state's voter registration campaign would be unnecessary.

qualifies as identification under current law.  Wouldn't be a bad idea to tighten the ID requirement, but that's a separate issue.

Especially (0.00 / 0)
since my 12 year old could meet that bar.  She gets a bank statement with her name and address.  Add two years and some makeup and should could easily register.

At 15 I had a bank account (statement) was 6'4" and often passed for 21 (allegedly).

This Spring I was applying for passports at my local BOE for my children.  I was absolutely disgusted at the lack of verification I saw when a woman registered herself and her sister.

I completely agree the process to vote should be an easy as possible but that ease has reached the point where the integrity of elections is being called into question.

I have no problem with voter ID, (0.00 / 0)
but I don't think there's evidence that voter fraud is common.

[ Parent ]
Oh so its only (0.00 / 0)
a problem if it's common? As in rampant? I see.

The problem with that blind faith is that
A SINGLE VOTE CAST FRAUDULENTLY can effectively negate yours or mine.

There can never been any evidence since any mechanism that would bring such evidence to light draws an immediate lawsuit and cries of voter intimidation and disenfranchisement.

I don't have to drink from the ocean to know that it is salty.

If you really have no objection to voter ID join the efforts to make it so, and voice your opposition to efforts to stop it.

I'm not going (0.00 / 0)
to support the DTA do this unless everyone is getting a jury duty registration form too :)

Suffering Battered Voter Syndrome since 8/31/1981

[ Parent ]
The DTA wouldn't have to do anything... (0.00 / 0)
if we could just register when we voted.

According to the state, jury duty is not limited to registered voters.

[ Parent ]
I'm not sugesting that it is (0.00 / 0)
But if the info I got when I did Federal jury is still accurate they use 3 primary sources to identify potential jurors

1) property tax records
2) voter registration records
3) RMV records

So if you're a DTA recipient you should have the same probability of being selected for jury duty as the rest of us I would hope.  But my own observation does not bear that out.

The day I went to jury duty they told me 126 jurors appeared that day during their (the jury clerk's) speech.  My quick visual scan showed  about a dozen non white potential jurors.  I remember being a bit surprised because it was in Boston after all( a fairly diverse metro area).  I spoke with no less that 35 people that day (lots of time milling about) all ALL were property owners...an inordinate number were small business owners.  I would call that more than a statistical anomaly wouldn't you?  I also find it strange that the demographics of the pool was not even close the population at large.  They were twice as many men as women too.

But I digress.....I would trade the voter registration requirements and deadlines as you propose for an ID requirement and the RMV requiring proof of citizenship.  If they didn't OBAMA's uncle could vote.

I see your point. (0.00 / 0)
That's a legitimate concern.  Are you saying that people in databases 1, 2 and 3 are three times as likely to be called as someone with just a drivers license?

I know that frequent movers are more likely to get called, since they stay in the database a while at the old address and so have a chance to be called from one of two addresses.  But I assumed the database would at least eliminate multiple entries of the same name at the same address... but maybe not.

[ Parent ]
I have a slightly different (0.00 / 0)
take on it....my anecdotal observation was the system was relying heavily on property tax info that day.  The clerk may have said "Get me white, male, property owners from Metro-West" that day.

But seriously....If you rent, don't own a vehicle and aren't registered to vote the chance of the summons arriving in your mailbox is greatly diminished.  Sounds like maybe a DTA recipient?  There is almost no paper trail other than 'maybe' a drivers license.

Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw, but some folks just have a low information profile.  Some of my relatives were low-profile folks....never owned property, didn't have license or own a vehicle, voted sporadically, moved every few years (some didn't have a phone until Reagan was in office).  They couldn't be found because no one knew they existed.

My young niece returned home to MA (0.00 / 0)
several months ago from Florida as she was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer and pregnant for the first time.

She did not have health Insurance and had her (one chance) baby only too pass away not long after she gave birth.

Guess what came mailed to her last week?
We were all appalled.

How is her personal information disseminated to the point that she recieved this Voter's Registration App?

The fact that anyone would stoop so low as to target and bother the sick and poor to register to vote simply because they would be more likely to vote for a particular party demonstrates how low some Dem's will go to stay in Power; it's beyond our understanding of evil people.

If so much as one penny of taxpayers money was involved in this scheme, I hope the AG is seriously looking into this!

An even odder situation.

....in a push sparked by a group led by former ACORN bigwigs

So ACORN made a name for itself by (among other things) protesting big banks before OCCUPY made it cool...harassing bank executives and generally opposing foreclosures on homes purchased by people who couldn't pay their mortgages.

Meanwhile back in academia Warren was purchasing homes in foreclosure and flipping them for a tidy profit.  Sounds almost like....dare I say it...capitalist.  Does the occupy movement know their poster girl may  be a closet capitalist and may enjoy making money **shudder**?
