Minority Leader Tarr has not yet decided to support Republican over Democrat

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Sun Aug 19, 2012 at 10:57:27 AM EDT

(See update below. - promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno)

Update 2:  I asked the Eagle Tribune to clarify if Senator Tarr was asked a question about an endorsement or if he volunteered that he was not endorsing.  Paul Tennant, the reporter with the Tribune stated that he asked Tarr if his presence at the fundraiser should be considered an endorsement.

Update: Senator Tarr emailed the following to RMG. I've changed the title:

I'm disturbed by the posting about Karin Photon. The genesis of the story was that I was actually attending an event on her behalf. MOREOVER, I have not refused to endorse Karin, and I am not sure where that headline came from. It was not in the article, and it is not accurate. I have neither made or declined an endorsement, and continue to discuss it with the candidate.

-------------------------------------

On Thursday, Charlie Baker hosted a fundraiser for Karin Rhoton.  Karin is a North Andover Republican running for the seat held by David Torrisi.  Torrisi faces a primary challenge by Diana DiZoglio, the former republican aide caught up in the Mark Cusack rostrum scandal.

The event was well attended, including the Minority Leader of the State Senate, Bruce Tarr.  Who according to multiple eyewitness accounts stayed for a total of less than ten minutes.  The short time at the event did not stop Senator Tarr from talking to the Lawrence Eagle Tribune however.

State Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, said his presence at a fundraiser for state representative candidate Karin Rhoton on Thursday night should not be interpreted as an endorsement.

Tarr continued to the Tribune

Tarr, whose 1st Essex Middlesex District includes four of North Andover's eight precincts, said he wanted to "hear what Karin had to say." As minority leader of the state Senate, Tarr said he certainly wants to encourage Republicans to run for the Legislature, where GOP ranks are sparse.

At the same time, however, Torrisi is a colleague, he pointed out. They have worked together on a number of issues, including Melissa's Law. Tarr said he has had a very good working relationship with both Torrisi and former Sen. Steven Baddour, D-Methuen, who recently resigned from the Senate.

The Minority Leader of one of the houses of the Great and General Court, certainly encourages Republicans to run, but won't support them when they do.  That's where you come in.  Please take the time TODAY to donate whatever you can to Karin Rhoton, a strong conservative voice for the legislature.  You can donate to Karin Rhoton by clicking here.  Or by using the form embedded after the jump.

Tarr the Tool (5.00 / 1)
Tarr has always been a smooth talker, but a Tool.
He's INFAMOUS for not supporting local Republicans.

Well, at least he hasn't kissed and hugged Rhotin's opponent (yet), like when he kissed and hugged Barbara 'Taxes' L'Italien in front of a crowded audience and wished his colleague best of luck, just minutes before she took the microphone to start her debate with a Republican (me!).

Yup. Always liked Tarr as a person, but he's yet one more reason why Republicans are at 11%.  Tarr the Tool.

Thank you Rob, for continuing to expose the guy.

Thank you Lonnie (0.00 / 0)
for continuing to expose the guy.  He is such a smooth talker he dupes the masses.  And here he is running UNOPPOSED.  Tarr the Tool, but NOT for conservatives!

That's really too bad (0.00 / 0)
But I'm not all that surprised, Tarr has always seemed like one of those DeLeo/Mariano Republicans.

It doesn't matter anyway, Torrisi is going to lose with or without Tarr endorsing Rhoton.

(R)- Outside 495

I attended the Merrimack Valley Tea Party (0.00 / 0)
where Karin spoke.  She was one of the most outstanding speakers at the candidates night.  On the other hand, if anyone wants to look at Torrissi's record, he is one of the worst things that could be had in this area!  Tarr is my Senator and usually "says" the right things but doesn't 'walk the walk'.  How do you say TERM LIMITS!!!

Once a weasel always a weasel (0.00 / 0)
And a smarmy and unctuous one at that.

Bruce Tarr (0.00 / 0)
Saying that Bruce Tarr doesn't support local Republican candidates running for office is not accurate.  I ran for State Senate in 2010 and he was very supportive.  He came down to my campaign headquarters in Woburn to help me get started and always answered my phone calls & e-mails (and there were plenty of them) when I needed help.

Doing some research on a candidate and attending one of their events before publically endorsing them seems fair to me.  An office holding Republican that endorses every person running for office with an R next to their name is irresponsible.

Congratulations (0.00 / 0)
You are obviously someone he sees useful to HIM.  Answering phone calls is an exception for him, not the norm.  Tarr the tool talks the talk, but does not walk the walk . . . unless it serves him, not his constituents.  But he sure has his glossy image down pat.  How do you say hack?

CLT Likes Karin! (5.00 / 1)
When I asked CLT's PAC director Chip Faulkner about this, he replied: What makes this even worse is that Tarr knows Karin.  According to Ted Tripp she has worked on his campaigns and was well known in Republican circles even before she announced for State Representative.  Here is a woman giving great speeches, running really hard while taking care of three kids -all under ten years old ... and Tarr is waffling.  Plus half of her hometown, North Andover, is in his senate district!   I'm glad our PAC sent her a check last week for $500.

Republicans seriously need an image consultant ... (0.00 / 0)
Really folks?  Tarr is one of the hardest working legislators in that State House and you are acting like a bunch of piranhas.  Way to go - tear the party apart in Massachusetts.  Smart.

In case you haven't noticed, you are in a very blue state and truthfully, the only intelligent way to politic here (and anywhere if you're actually committed to making a difference) is to like everyone and work together.  To pit the party against each other just makes you look like a bunch of jerks.

I'm not kidding - nationally and Massachusetts, I'd love to see leadership in the Republican PARTY.  In Massachusetts, we have STRONG leadership in the State House - State Senators and Reps are making a difference - every day.  When is the PARTY leadership going to whip those into place that are embarrassing the party?  You really do not want me to start giving you examples.  There are so many nationally and a couple new ones locally.

Republicans and Democrats WORK for the PEOPLE.  Not the party.  Might be a good thing to remember.

I'll take the "hard work" of our freshmen legislators (0.00 / 1)
all day long over the lifers like Tarr.  Rhoton promises to be of that ilk.  Tarr's hedging, especially for the likes of Torrissi is an outright disgrace!

"Let's all like everyone and work together." (0.00 / 0)
No problem with that. Then, when the person you like votes the wrong way consistently, you find someone who will do a better job. Bruce Tarr is a gem and had a 100% rating with CLT until the recent vote in which all Senate Republicans voted collegially to have the state take over the private health care system. But what is the point in even having parties if one isn't in opposition to the other? Don't politicians expect the other party to run candidates against them? expecially if that party only has four  members in the entire Senate?

[ Parent ]
Check the record (0.00 / 0)
of Torrisi, then hear what Rhoton stands for and get back to me on TARR.  No excuse, and goes a long way to explain why we have only 4 in the Senate.

[ Parent ]
It's pretty simple, really (2.50 / 2)
When you are the senate minority leader, you are the LEADER of the PARTY in the SENATE.

You have an obligation to support all republican opponents to dem incumbents.

Otherwise, you continue to remain in the minority.

Which isn't the point.

[ Parent ]
The object is to WIN - not just endorse (5.00 / 1)
Excuse me guys, but ummmmm.... the Red Mass Group article says right in it that the Democrats are in a primary.
Typically one does not make an official endorsement until the race is settled.

Why? Because often when you endorse your guy, you attack the other other guy and that makes it pretty hard to do when you don't know who the "other guy" is going to be.

Endorsements are big messaging opportunities to actually get to say what you want without liberal media "reinterpreting it" for you. When you don't know who the Democrat is going to be how do you focus your message?

Also, endorsements are big messaging opportunities that are FREE, so timing it perfectly to get the right electoral bump is also a huge factor. Patience! Endorsing now is too early, do it when it has an impact! :)

What am I missing here? (0.00 / 0)
I don't think there is a Republican primary. So are you saying Sen. Tarr should wait because he doesn't know which Democrat will win, in case he wants to endorse him instead of the Republican?

[ Parent ]
Not at all... (0.00 / 0)
With all due respect. How in the world did you get that idea from my statement? It is late isn't it?

[ Parent ]
Please explain (0.00 / 0)
You suggest that because there is a DEM primary, Tarr should wait to endorse Rhoton.

What does a DEM primary have to do with his endorsement of Rhoton?

[ Parent ]
respectfully... (0.00 / 0)
I explained all of that clearly in my statement.

[ Parent ]
There are three people (0.00 / 0)
There are three people in the Commonwealth of Massachsuetts whose job it is to endorse EVERY GOP candidate, not in a primary and not convicted or indicted of a crime.  Those three people are the MassGOP Chairman, the Minority Leader of the House and the Minority Leader of the Senate.  That Tarr would even consider not endorsing a GOP candidate, in his Senate District for a Representative seat is dumbfounding.  That's his job.

Full Disclosure

The idea that there is IMPACT is silly (0.00 / 0)
His marble mouth comments now hurt her more than any endorsement will help her down the road.

Bruce Tarr is not a rock star. He's the minority leader. He is expected to endorse her - he's even expected to help her raise money, and give her money from his PAC.

With all due respect, I think you're way over-analyzing a state senator's impact here.
