Minority Leader Tarr affirms support for Rhoton

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Mon Aug 20, 2012 at 17:49:02 PM EDT

This afternoon, via an emailed statement, Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester) affirmed his support for Karin Rhoton (R-North Andover) in her bid for the State House.

Tarr stated, "A recently published story may have caused confusion about my support for Karin Rhoton, and that is unfortunate.  I have and continue to be impressed by her commitment to controlling state spending and job creation, and I am appreciative of her work on behalf of Melissa's Law. I have heard what she has to say, and believe that she has what it takes to be a good and effective legislator."

Asked by Red Mass Group if the statement constituted an endorsement of Rhoton, Lisa-Marie Cashman a spokeswoman for Tarr said that it was not a formal endoresement.  Red Mass Group further confirmed with a reporter for the Eagle Tribune, which originally ran the story that Tarr was asked if his attendance at a Rhoton fundraiser constituted an endorsement.

Rhoton in a statement on her website last evening had the following to say about the flap, "Senator Tarr has been very supportive of my race thus far and I enjoyed working with him and many volunteer organizations to pass Melissa's Bill."

Rhoton continued, "I have appreciated the support he has given me and although endorsements are welcomed, the only endorsement I strive for is that of the people of the Fourteenth Essex District on November 6. We will continue to work hard, knock on doors, and get our message of fiscal responsibility and accountability out to the people of North Andover, Haverhill, Lawrence, and Methuen."

More Obfuscating Nonsense (0.00 / 0)
Jesus, can't this weasel resist waffling?

"I have and continue to be impressed..."

Why wouldn't we be confused by your "support?" You're still waffling on it.

BRUCE TARR:

YOU ARE THE #$%E MINORITY LEADER.

YOU ARE OBLIGED TO ENDORSE EVERY REPUBLICAN CHALLENGER TO A DEMOCRATIC INCUMBENT.

IF YOU'RE NOT WILLING TO, GET THE !@#$ OUT.

(Feel free to apologize to your Demmie colleague in private, and simply say, "sorry pal, it's just politics. If he's not a total d**k, he'll understand.)

I disagree (0.00 / 0)
that all republicans need to endorse all republicans.  In fact, I think it is critical that republicans ONLY endorse good republicans of the highest integrity.  Nothing hurts the R more than a bad one.

What is outrageous about Tarr's waffling is 1- his reasoning that Torressi is a colleague thus he wasn't willing to jump in for Rhoton, 2- Torressi's record and values are such that he would be the antithesis of what a republican should tolerate, and finally, 3-  Rhoton shows all the signs of being a Lyon which is exactly what's needed, or does he support L'Italian on her re-run for her lost seat as well?

He's not "all republicans" (0.00 / 0)
He's a party leader. His objective is to be the Senate President (ahem).

Besides, under no circumstances should this woman suffer this kind of vague circumspection.

Regardless of Torrisi's record or Tarr's relationship with him, Tarr's obligation is to support people who will vote for HIM in leadership. Unless Torrisi's willing to vote for Tarr for Senate President (heheheheheheh), Tarr's allegiance is to Rhoton.

I'm sure in the past there have been plenty of R candidates who do not merit party support in money or manpower. That's not what Tarr's being asked. He's being asked for a few words. "I endorse Rhoton."

We agree that Tarr is a waffler. I hope Rhoton wins, and when asked if she'll support Tarr, says, "I think Tarr has been a good senator. I'll weigh his performance against the other possible candidates."

We agree about Tarr a waffler, and (0.00 / 0)
I assume on other issues as well, but I still feel his loyalty to Torrisi over the ilk of Rhoton speaks louder than anything else in terms of Tarr himself.  As to his objective, say it isn't so.  If he is to stick around until he has enough votes for Senate President, he'll be beyond a lifer/hack/career politician.  So much for our founders' intentions or self imposed term limits.

"I hope Rhoton wins, and when asked if she'll support Tarr, says, "I think Tarr has been a good senator. I'll weigh his performance against the other possible candidates."

True that.

I fear he's already there (0.00 / 0)
Bruce looks, sounds and acts like a lifer.

I guess my characterization is a bit over-dramatic. Let's just say his objective is to increase his numbers.

For the near term, let's say by enough that the Republican caucus has enough votes to force a roll call vote (7). Of course, that would require them to ask for one.

[ Parent ]
This probably goes without saying, (0.00 / 0)
but it should be said.  One has to wonder how much longer it would have taken for Tarr to endorse (oops, he still hasn't) Rhoton if not for Enos.  Well done.

Adverstise here for as low as $60 per week.
