Dean Cavaretta Leaves Race & Endorses Kirsten Hughes for MassGOP Chair

by: BNCordeiro

( - promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno)

I literally just received this email from Kirsten Hughes to the members of the State Committee.

Dear State Committee Members,

I hope you are all enjoying the weeked. It's been a busy few days for me with a great Region 2 dinner is Westborough last night and then attending Luke Noble's very well done North Shore event this morning. I'm so grateful for the support from many MRSC members and other elected officials have pledged to me the past few days and today I'm proud to annouce that Dean Caveretta has withdrawn from the race for Chair and endorsed my candidacy. I've copied Dean's important message below. I look forward to working with Dean and all grassroots activists like him so that our Party has a successful 2014 election cycle under my stewardship.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Best,

Kirsten

p.s. Thank you again, Dean!

Dear Fellow Activists and State Committee Members,

I am writing to announce my withdrawal from the race for Party Chair.  I feel this is the appropriate time to exit the race for Chairman and place my support behind the candidate who has articulated specific, grassroots ideas for reform that I know will move the Party towards success up and down the ballot in 2014.

I'm supporting Quincy City Councilor Kirsten Hughes to be the next Chair of the Massachusetts Republican Party.

Kirsten and I agree that more urban outreach and greater direct candidate support, especially down ballot is essential. She is also open to introducing effective 2014 ballot questions which could re-frame and strengthen our overall message to voters, while uniting Republican moderates, libertarians and social conservatives. She agrees as I do that after several disappointing election cycles, we must think anew in reaching unaffiliated voters who are both fed up with Democratic politics as usual and worried about the future of the Commonwealth and our country.

This Action Plan contain some of the goals of NewMassPlaybook.com first launched by Malden City Councilor David D'Arcangelo and myself in December 2010 - with the hope of sparking a serious conversation about how to bring together all conservative activists, strengthen our operations as a party, and make the MassGOP a positive alternative for every voter, from every walk of life.  Part of that plan includes a coordinated, professional, full-time operation at the MassGOP with an elevated commitment to cutting edge communications where every Democratic folly, smear, back-room deal, and patronage giveaway is rebutted.  I know Kirsten is the best choice for Chair to accomplish this and several pieces of our plan.

It's time for the Massachusetts Republican Party to come together with a renewed sense of commitment. Kirsten's background in successful local elections will be an asset as the Party trains our community leaders in engagement and collaboration to bring more voters to our cause; achieving a balanced, two-party system on Beacon Hill and in our local municipalities.

Kirsten and I share the long term goal of competing everywhere, including everyone and offering new ideas. Please join me in supporting Kirsten Hughes to lead the Party to a successful November 2014.

Dean Cavaretta

2012 Candidate for the MA State Senate
2010 Dep. Campaign Manager, Karyn Polito for Treasurer

As customary, I've tried to faithfully reproduce the email.  Nota Bene, I am an endorser of Kirsten Hughes & will cast my vote for her election.

Utter Hypocrisy (2.00 / 1)
That Dean is dropping out of the race comes as no real surprise.  He had garnered support insufficient to push him over the top and bring him onward to victory.

He and David, who is still in the race as near as I can tell, have brought forward some very important concepts regarding down ticket races and how to help support candidates other than those at the very top of the ticket which has been the bane of the Mass GOP for far too long.

Yet, Dean, on the heals of his withdrawal from the race, endorses Kirsten Hughes (as is his right) with the following as part of the reason for his endorsement:

Kirsten and I agree that more urban outreach and greater direct candidate support, especially down ballot is essential.

However, this rationale stands in remarkably stark contrast to the statements of another Hughes endorser and House Minority Leader Brad Jone who had this remarkable quote in the Globe today:

House minority leader Bradley H. Jones Jr., who supports Hughes, said that the party's current focus should be on the campaign at hand. "The US Senate race is the bottom of the ticket, the top of the ticket, and the middle of the ticket," he said. "It's the whole thing. It's not about competing for resources."

This when the ONLY current races in the state are for two HOUSE seats, seats, that if the Mass GOP were victorious, would add to Minority Leader Jones' caucus.  But, instead of focusing on the races at hand, the down-ticket races, he is focused the race that does not yet even exist as it requires the confirmation of Senator Kerry as Secretary of State.

So Dean is joining forces with the candidate supported by the LEADER of the Republican Caucus in the House who does not even seem to care about the opportunity to increase Mass GOP representation.

So some questions:

To Dean - how does Minority Leader Jones' comments reconcile with your NewMassPlaybook and focusing on the grassroots and down ticket races?

To Kirsten and Dean - how does Minority Leader Jones' statements reconcile with your stated desires to grow Mass GOP in the urban areas?  Here we are with House races in Peabody and Everett and Rep. Jones does not even acknowledge their existence.

To Kirsten - Please help me understand how the words reconcile with your actions and the actions of your most senior elected official who has endorsed you.  Will you call him to task for this position or do you agree with Rep. Jones?

Be nice! (5.00 / 1)
Yeoowch!

After getting beaten up so badly on this site, you'd think we'd all just wish Dean well, etc.

Do you think he had any idea what Minority Leader Jones said when he endorsed Ms. Hughes? Of course not. Do you think Ms. Hughes endorses the worst possible view of Mr. Jones's comments? Of course not. (But I think the story made her look terrible and she should do some damage control on the concept of being "installed" by someone else. She must embrace a bold agenda of her own.)

And do you think that Mr. Jones's quote in that awful Globe story was all he had to say? How do you know what context it was made in? In fact, in response to how he looked, he has, on several places in Facebook, made good comments about the other elections.

p.s. However, don't get me wrong. I have often found Mr. Jones to be saying things that are somewhat off-key. Several times in the past year I have said, "Er... that isn't how I would have said that, especially as minority leader."

Dean Cavaretta woudl be an asset to any team. The State GOP (4.50 / 2)
should find a place for him no matter who wins the chairmanship.
