UPDATED 1:30PM EST: Hughes Falsely Claims to be First Woman Quincy City Councilor

by: Paul R. Ferro

Tue Jan 29, 2013 at 23:36:50 PM EST

UPDATE, 1:30PM EST.  The Hughes campaign has edited the website description of the candidate to read:
Currently serving on the Quincy City Council, Kirsten became the first woman elected to the position in the ward's history.
-Emphasis added

RedMassGroup has retained both screen capture and webarchive copies of the original website version as quoted below in the original article.

---------------

Embattled candidate for MassGOP State Chair Kirsten Hughes faces fresh questions about embellishments of her resume.

On her campaign website, Ms. Hughes, a Quincy City Councilor first elected in 2011, claims, quote:

Currently serving on the Quincy City Council, Kirsten became the first woman elected to the position in the city's history.

However, a review of election results posted on the Quincy City website clearly indicate Margaret Laforest, whom Hughes currently serves with, was elected at least two years before Ms. Hughes, in 2009.

It is unlikely Ms. Hughes failed to notice her colleague over the last year, making her claim doubly baffling.

This, coupled with recent questions regarding her past voting record, and her weak record on taxes casts further doubt on Ms. Hughes ability to effectively counter the Democrat Machine in Massachusetts.

The Femal Al Gore (5.00 / 1)

Kirsten Hughes.... the Female Al Gore?
Say it ain't so. Please!

Look. In all seriousness, no one cares.
She has one trump card: "establishment".

And, they'll explain away anything.

People forget that change requires change.
She's has a nice smiling face, but other than that, no change.

hear, hear (0.00 / 0)
CHANGE is critical as past results so clearly indicate.

Same as the old boss. With all of these heavy endorsements, watch for the "establishment" to double down and get nasty.

Strike 3 for Green's Attack Dogs (5.00 / 1)
Just when you thought Red Mass Group couldn't get any worse...  Kirsten is the first woman to represent Quincy's Ward 5.  Sorry Paul, wrong again.  Voting records, fail. Tax hike, fail. Does Rick Rappaport Green have any tricks left in the bag that are, well true? I hope Rick Rappaport Green is better at attacking Democrats than he is fellow Republicans, because this is embarrassing for Green's attack puppies.

Rick, I thought the 'R' stood for respect? What a joke!

I directly quoted her website bio, Dan. (0.00 / 0)
It doesn't say "for ward five".  In fact, her bio page doesn't say if she's at-large, or a ward councilor. I didn't know that until I went to the elections page, and I used to be a Ward Councilor!   Why I directly quoted the passage so there would be no doubt.  There would certainly be no way for a casual reader unfamiliar with Quincy (I have extensive family there) to know.

And I downloaded a copy of the page in case it's changed overnight.

At best, she used incredibly poor  language, at worst she did so with a wink and a nod.

She just spent two years working for a campaign that hammered Liz Warren for embellishing her resume.  No one thought to fact-check a statement like "first woman to" anything?  That alone doesn't alarm you?  Getting elected in a large city as a Republican is impressive enough.  Why the need to add the qualifier "first woman" if not in an attempt to embellish, just a little...

oops, how did I miss that Paul had the exact quote? (0.00 / 0)
It seems pretty clear to me.  I don't know how you'd interpret it any other way.

Not exactly the biggest scandal in the world, but it makes me wonder if she even read the text.

c'mon (0.00 / 0)
Even if that is the case, the presentation is insanely misleading.

Anyway, could you please tell us more about the history of ward 5 Quincy city counselors?  Who are some other firsts?

Keep it up, Paul. This is gold! (0.00 / 0)
Tax attack, fail.  Voting records, fail. Now this latest fail. Paul, you are killing it! Quick, delete this comment!

Rick Rappaport Green must be losing the race for chair because unleashing the brilliant minds of Matt Elder and Mr. Ferro to falsely attack the woman is a poor, last ditch effort.

Who woulda thunk another rich white guy with a grand total of 6 months political experience would flounder and resort to attacking a fellow Republican?

Sorry you're so upset that I quoted her website. (0.00 / 0)
Btw, what, exactly was false in what Councilor Elder wrote?  No one has made the argument she didn't vote to raise taxes.  People have made excuses (I think Mr. Cavarettas was "the Democrats made her do it". ) Others, like you have with this post, just ignored the facts, and attacked the messenger.

But what in Mr Elders post was factually incorrect?  What in this post is factually incorrect?  If you have independent evidence refuting my claim ms. Hughes didn't vote in Massachusetts between 1998 (when she first registered to vote in Quincy) and 2009, present it in a blog post.

Elder presented a case vs Hughes backed by her record.  I made a case here based on what she wrote in her website about herself, and public records.  I made another argument based in public records in separate blog post.  You want to counter-argue any of those, just like with Mr. Cavaretta', we'll be happy to front page it.

I have to admit, the Rappaport reference is going over my head.

C'Mon. Enough with the establishment picks. They have proved a BIG (0.00 / 0)
FAIL.

Admission of Sloppiness or Whatever? (0.00 / 0)
Changing the website on the fly without making any note of the change seems a bit, to use a term my nephews use, sneaky.

That Kirsten was overstating her case with the original quote has been RMG since the weekend and became a full post earlier this week and her she goes making a last minute change without any disclosure. This leads to more than a couple of questions:

1). Why make a change now if the information is accurate as your supporters have stated?

2). Does this cause you any embarrassment?  At the least it smacks of sloppiness at the worst it reads of an attempt to deceive both of which are embarrassing.

3). Does this cause any embarrassment for your legislative supporters who touted the original claim in their letter of support to you?

And the most important question:

Does any of this matter to the voters who cast their ballots in a little over 24 hours?

For someone who claims to have been an activist for over a decade and has been active at the highest levels of campaigns this episode has the tint of sloppiness mixed with arrogance that has infected too many of our leaders and candidates in previous years.  I hope this does not presage what is to come from the Mass GOP should Kirsten be elected.
