No Scott, So Who's Next

by: ConsEph

Fri Feb 01, 2013 at 16:41:47 PM EST

(Scott Brown was a semi-obscure State Senator when he announced for U.S. Senate in August 2009.  There are a lot of young GOP up & comers, especially in the State House.  Senator Fattman?  Senator Lombardo?  Senator Lyons?  Ok, not all of them are young.... - promoted by Paul R. Ferro)

Fresh off the closest Mass GOP Chair election in recent memory, newly elected Chair, Kirsten Hughes, is immediately put to the test.  She will have to lead the effort to find a candidate for the special US Senate election to fill the seat vacated by John Kerry.  The deadlines for gathering signatures and the general timing of the election leaves her with NO time to mull over a decision.  She will need to act fast to identify a candidate or candidates so the work of getting them on the ballot and prepared to face the Democrats in June can begin in earnest.

That leaves the question- who should run for the US Senate Seat now that Scott has decided not to?

I've seen emails just in the past half hour or less from Dan Winslow & Richard Tisei indicating that they're considering the matter.

NOT Tisei (0.00 / 0)
Richard Tisei sent out an email minutes ago stating that he is NOT running for the US Senate seat.

Two people who appear to be running. (0.00 / 0)

Doug Bennett.

Interesting that Bennett site is apparently parked at... (0.00 / 0)

I understand that Doug has already knocked on 2 million doors in MA during the last 2 weeks, as he preps for his run.

Kidding aside... (5.00 / 1)
If Doug is running it would not surprise me if gets the required sigs and does so by himself. Bennett is a force.

I've only observed him from afar... (0.00 / 0)
...and my impression is he is either a friend or certainly a strong political acquaintance of yours, but over the years he's devolved from an "up and comer" to a perennial gadfly prone to bluster.  My snide comment above is an obvious reference to his claim of personally knocking on thousands of door in Boston in his city council race.  If his claim was remotely true, he should have been elected, or at the very least, that kind of hard work would have earned him a strong support from voters.  But it did not and his poor finish indicates he may have been fibbing about all those doors he knocked.  That, and some of his other antics, puts my BS shield at full force whenever I hear the name "Doug Bennett".

He was able to advance past the preliminary. (0.00 / 0)
That was a big deal.  No one thought he could do that.

He claims to have... (0.00 / 0)
...knocked on 100,000 doors and that got him only 6% of the vote...just a huge disconnect between his claim and the results.

And not to pile on but, you don't have long-term political viability when you exceed expectations and advance past the preliminary.

Hard to blame him for getting out of the GOP considering the way he was treated in the primary.  Actions have consequences.

We should always treat every candidate fairly... (0.00 / 0)
but who is Jack E. Robinson kidding?  When he was the Republican nominee for Senate in 2000, Carla Howell almost beat him for second place.  With that kind of a record, does he really think it was the "R" next to his name that was holding him back?

[ Parent ]
So Who's Next (5.00 / 1)
I do not want a republican with the R after his or her name. I want a republican that is fiscally and socially conservative. I want to be excited by their questions, the way I was yesterday when I watched Ted Cruz question Chuck Hagel on my iPhone  when I was having a late lunch.

The man hadn't been a senator for a month and he asked the best questions and was the most prepared. He had an audio or video from Al  Jazeera and corrected Hagel.
McCain was nasty to him because he endorsed Obama over him in 2008. Ted was doing his job.

I will work to elect someone like Ted Cruz but not someone who will vote with the dems 50% of the time like Scott did.

I was horrified in the summer of 2011 when Reid introduced a bill one weekend morning to increase the debt ceiling and Scott jumped up to vote for it even though the bill did not actually exist, Reid voted against his own bill.

There are more conservatives here than people realize, we do not want sometime republicans.

Paul - Senate Age Requirement (0.00 / 0)
I didn't include Ryan in the list purposefully as he is not qualified to run for US Senate because he has not yet attained the age of 30.   He will make a good Congressman, Senator or Governor though.

Hmmm... what people are the right age? (0.00 / 1)
Isn't that Paul Ferro guy in his 40s?  Maybe he could run.

What I'm Looking For (0.00 / 0)
Here are my thoughts:

1) Whoever the Republican nominee is will be an underdog. That's hardly the end of the world - Scott Brown was an underdog with low name recognition at this stage of the special election process when Ted Kennedy died. But because we're talking about an underdog, I'd like to see a candidate whose future political career can benefit from an honorable and credible defeat, should that be the outcome. So I'm thinking of someone whose name would be familiar to people who follow politics closely but not to the general public statewide.

2) US Senator shouldn't be an entry level job. I felt that way when Elizabeth Warren was running and I'm not going to be a hypocrite and change my perspective now. The Republican nominee should be someone who has held elective office at the state or county government level within the last few years.

Applying those criteria to the choices in the poll, I'm left with Bob Hedlund and Dan Winslow. I voted for Hedlund because he's got more electoral experience, but I'd welcome either one or both as serious, credible candidates whom I could imagine serving in the US Senate.

Is there anyone on that list who isn't for gay marriage? (0.00 / 0)
Winslow says he is "socially tolerant" but he is more radical than anyone imagined.
Bielat seems to take the Kerry-style position of citing his being Catholic and opposing gay marriage and civil unions but then just standing by and allowing it all to happen. And being opposed to Civil Unions personally just marks him as intolerant and uncivil personally, not the kind of person to be in the Senate. I don't know Healey's position, but I think it's pretty lame too.

Is there anyone who will stop same-sex marriage, stop same-sex procreation, and yet support legal recognition for gay couples that aren't juridically equivalent to marriage?

No (5.00 / 1)
Because they will lose, lose big, and embarrass the party. Anyone who runs for the United States Senate from Massachusetts with the intention of beating the drum of turning back gay rights will be labeled as such and the entire campaign message will be about the intolerance of that candidate.

Not saying a pro-family values candidate wouldn't be able to run successfully at all, but to harp on those issues and have them drive a candidates narrative is a losing concoction in this state.

[ Parent ]
Romney 2002, Brown 2010?? (0.00 / 0)
Seems to me the only Republicans to win statewide have been opposed to same-sex marriage, and were strongly associated with that position. Every Republican that was pro-SSM has lost, including Brown last year when he gave up and said it was settled law.

[ Parent ]
Brown wan't obscure to everyone (0.00 / 0)
Scott Brown was a semi-obscure State Senator when he announced for U.S. Senate in August 2009.

There were plenty of people who knew about him as the state senator who steadfastly defended marriage. He showed up at pro-marriage and VOM meetings. BMG vilified him for his stance. He won big time. You probably weren't born then, but most of us remember the facts.

[ Parent ]
20,000 activists is not well- known (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
Neither made that a campaign centerpiece (0.00 / 0)
Having the opinion is one thing, but your post insinuated you wanted the candidate to espouse that throng pro family values message as a campaign centerpiece, which is what I was referring to. Did you see Brown or Romney come out strong anti gay marriage in their campaigns? No we didn't, because its not reflective of the electorate at large in MA. that is what I'm referring to. Plenty of family values candidates have run and won but none of them making rolling back gay rights a major part of their ampaignb agenda.

[ Parent ]
They built up the trust and then coasted on it (0.00 / 0)
That's OK, we understood why they wouldn't espouse it. As long as they didn't refute their earlier actions or distance themselves from marriage supporters like VOM, MassResistance, or me; they kept us on board and we voted for them, once.

We certainly should roll back the right to procreate offspring with someone of the same sex. If that is the same as "rolling back gay rights" then so be it. But I think it's a very different right. Gay rights do not include being able to reproduce with someone of the same sex. Gay rights are more about not having to reproduce with someone to have a respected and recognized relationship. So if we prohibited procreating with someone of the same sex it wouldn't roll back gay rights at all, it would advance gay rights, and enable us to extend federal recognition to same sex couples in Civil Unions defined as "marriage minus conception rights."

[ Parent ]
Gay Marriage (5.00 / 1)
The press thinks gay marriage is some sort of societal sea change akin to the 50s-60s civil rights movement but it's just not.  Regardless whether you're pro or con on gay marriage, it's such an irrelevant political fringe issue and should be treated as such.

The best response from any candidate is to borrow from James Carville:  Same sex marriage is the law of the land; I don't want one but I won't stand in the way of someone who does.

End of discussion.

Elizabeth Warren: a bankruptcy professor, bankrupt of ideas

[ Parent ]
We all have gay marriages now (0.00 / 0)
Even if you are married to a woman, it no longer means the same thing as it used to before. It is now a gay marriage that does not approve or allow you to have natural children with your spouse, because it is now equal to a same-sex marriage which requires genetic engineering or substitute gametes to have children and cannot have natural children. Same-sex marriage either means that we must allow attempting to create offspring of same-sex couples using stem cells or some other method, or it means marriages can be prohibited from conceiving offspring together or forced to use donor gametes, and both of those directly deny the right to have natural offspring. The fact that we are all just natural offspring, created equal, is the basis of human rights and equality. So it's a big deal, it's not just about letting people live and love how they want.

And we can prove that, by supporting Civil Unions that give all the security and benefits and obligations for gay couples, but explicitly do not convey the approval and right to have sex and conceive offspring.

Btw, I take it you concede my point that Brown 2010 and Romney 2002 were both opposed to same-sex marriage and that every Republican candidate that has taken the Carville position has lost?

[ Parent ]
let's get real (0.00 / 0)
Let's deal with some reality. Whether it happens in our generation or the next generation, gay marriage will happen. I don't like it, but it will happen. Legal abortion is the law. I don't like it, but Roe v Wade won't be overturned. There were a lot of people at the election the other night who probably should have had their rosary beads outside an abortion clinic. Their disruption of the pledge of allegiance was annoying, disrespectful, and self serving. They seemed to think that the entire election was a referendum on abortion. Our Party has much bigger issues. Most of them we can agree on. The ones that we can't agree on aren't really even issues if we will realistically never make a difference. We can find a candidate who has the ability to be a leader, can bring some fiscal sense to DC, wants to keep the government out of our lives and respects the Constitution. We have several Republicans who can do that and if we start nit picking over an abortion litmus test, we've handed the election to the democrats. For too long we've let the Democrats decide the issues. They've tossed around terms like 'womens' right to choose' and 'gay rights' and let the media do their dirty work. Shame on the Republicans for letting that happen. If we picked a candidate like Tisei (who could have won if they didn't vote about 4 times each in Lynn) we could beat them at their own game. Please redirect your attention to some real issues and candidates. If you need another cause, try voter fraud. We can make sure they don't stuff the ballot boxes again if we refocused on what CAN happen rather than on what NEVER will happen.

Uhm, hello? (5.00 / 1)
"If we picked a candidate like Tisei (who could have won if they didn't vote about 4 times each in Lynn) ... We can make sure they don't stuff the ballot boxes again if we refocused on what CAN happen rather than on what NEVER will happen."

How are you figuring on not letting that happen again, or getting rid of all the illegal or dead people that are voting for the dems?  Do you know how many people DON'T know that the dems in Lynn were given two ballots each?  And not a word of the outrageous illegal conduct of Sheriff Andrea Cabral (then Sheriff of Suffolk County) at the polls as witnessed by lawyers working for Brown.

Why are not Tisei, Brown, the GOP, everybody making so much noise over this that it can't be ignored?  Why the crickets?

Uhm, hello--I wish I could do something but I can't, can you??? (0.00 / 0)
@termlimits--I don't know why the crickets. The only thing that I can possibly be a reason would be that if the Republicans starting making noise about the voter fraud, they'd look like cry babies. Everyone would say sour grapes. They did get enough feedback--I know people who documented what they saw, but nothing is being done. This should be the job of the Party legal staff to gather the data and make a case.

[ Parent ]
Party Legal Staff? (0.00 / 0)
The Party's legal staff, Vincent DeVito, is a large part of the problem so its hard to see how they can be a part of the solution unless that solution starts with a new legal staff.

Think about this, if the Party's legal staff was doing a good job would we all know the name of Legal Counsel?  But far too many of us know Vincent DeVito and his escapades whether it be at the election last Thursday night, his poor behavior at the RNC as reported by Evan Kenney or his entanglement with a Wisconsin State Senator.  In most other organizations he would have been shown the door, not yet with the MassGOP.

I truly hope that our newly elected Chair, Kirsten Hughes, makes a change in this position her FIRST staff change.  It would show that she means business and encourage me that real change is on the way!

Time will tell, but, unfortunately, time is a commodity in short supply these days.

Kerry Healey A Contender? (0.00 / 0)
Kerry Healey?  LOL!!! Mass GOP Liberty activists made mince meat of Kerry Healey and most of the other Romney cronies at the District 6 GOP delegate caucus elections last April. Bring it on!

6th Congressional District The results of the delgate election were:

Ed Rombach (Liberty) - 117
Bruce Tarr (Official Romney) - 115
Jonathan Berecz & Tom Bowling (Both Liberty) TIED - 114
Brad Jones (Official Romney) - 109
Kerry Healey (Official Romney) - 108 <<< LOSER!

The results for Alternate were:

Scott MacDonald (Liberty) - 95
Evan Kenney (Liberty) - 91
Stephanie Hamilton (Liberty) - 90
Charlie Baker (Official Romney) - 72
Luke Noble (Official Romney) - 62
Brad Jones Official Romney - 45 <<< BIG LOSER!
Frank Cousins (Official Romney) - 33

Not to kick a man when he is down but this came out on Saturday:

A company owned by former Massachusetts candidate for governor and convenience store magnate Christy Mihos has filed for bankruptcy after racking up as much as $10 million in debt.

Mihos has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on behalf of Christy's of Cape Cod LLC, which means a court-appointed trustee would liquidate its assets to pay off creditors before the company is discharged from most of its debts.

I hope things ultimately go very well (0.00 / 0)
If Christy Mihos walked into the State Committee meeting on May 16 then I would greet him with a smile and a warm handshake, just as I did back a few years ago when I helped to reorganize his town committee down the Cape.

I have absolutely no grudge or ax to grind with Christy.  I've always found him to be a very cordial gentleman when I've been in his presence or dealt with him.  What business or personal problems he has aren't any of my concern and I would treat him with all the Christian charity he deserves.  After all, Christy hasn't done anything to/against me and his interests do not conflict with mine.

I related a recent news article in direct reference to a previous post.  I render no value judgment.  I had absolutely no malicious intent.

No one should, and I certainly include myself in this, take any pleasure in Christy's misfortune or current circumstances.  I sincerely hope and absolutely pray that Christy Mihos can turn things around both personally and professionally.  We should hope for nothing less from our brethren.  But by for the Grace of God go I.

A name I haven't seen yet- former U.S Attorney Michael J. Sullivan.

Strong law and order credentials.
Twice elected DA in Plymouth County.
Clean as they come.

I don't know if he has any interest, but he'd be a strong candidate for the nomination.

Does anyone know who Gabriel Gomez is ? (0.00 / 0)
From what I can see he's a very successful venture capitalist who has a nice family and a house in Cohasset that was profiled by the Globe.  Yet i hear his name mentioned everywhere but here.  Who is he?

Former Navy Seal, graduate of Annapolis and MPA from Harvard.

Donated $2,500 to Romney in 2012 as well as $500 to Shuttleworth for Congress in Northern Virginia (Democrat).

Can't find much else.. other than a profile in the Globe of his house in Cohasset.

Bruce Shuttleworth (4.00 / 1)
I assume Gomez made the 2 donations totaling $500 to Bruce Shuttleworth for Congress based on likely ties through the Navy.

Shuttleworth ran in a primary against Rep. Jim Moran in 2012.  Here is his Facebook page and some quotes fro mit:

Political Views     Very Liberal

Anybody but Markey ! (0.00 / 0)
Everyone on this site seems to think things are hopeless, but I don't see Ed Markey as being more appealing than Martha Coakley.  If this Gomez guy has a pile of money to spend and can express a GOP position compellingly, then why not ? After all we do know he has a big house in MA.  I hear Markey's house is in Maryland. Personally, I think Winslow would be a great candidate ... and he has a house in MA.

BTW for all the people saying let's just pack it in and go for Steve Lynch.... that's why he has no chance in the Dem primary .... too many people on RMG like Steve Lynch !
