Spare Change Guy at Boston Tea Party

by: Garrett Quinn

Thu Apr 16, 2009 at 07:30:00 AM EDT

If you're familiar with Boston you've probably come across the legendary Spare Change Guy.

He is usually found hassling pedestrians around Boston Common and Park Street Station. Dressed in ratty jeans and a nasty overcoat he is hard to miss. Did we mention he hasn't had a proper haircut since Bush I? His gravely voice and creepy glasses complete him.

At the Boston Tea Party I was fortunate enough to catch this homeless legend weaving his way through the large crowd.

This guy was hilarious (0.00 / 0)
Asking for a handout at a conservative rally...

Priceless.  Someone should have told him to walk up the stairs and ask the guy in the big house with the funny roof.

I love Spare Change Guy... (0.00 / 0)
I know it's wrong, but I can't help myself. The best part being of course, that this icon of Boston homelessness...

...has an apartment in the burbs.

You'd be surprised (0.00 / 0)
at how many "homeless" people in Boston actually have "homes" they live in.

Cambridge too....there was an older woman who had trust-fund $$$$ and lived in that part of "old money Cambridge".....bat-shit-crazy she was....and she'd hang in the Square with the homeless, bumming change off the People.  Didn't bathe, didn't brush her teeth.....but had wads of $$$$$ in the Cambridge Trust Savings Bank.

Actually, conservatives give a greater part of their income to charity... (0.00 / 0)

I haven't seen him in years! (0.00 / 0)
Yet whenever I do, its at the most unexpected places.

Perhaps he didn't get the spare change he believed in this past election.

Speaking of money (0.00 / 0)
I know that people gave donations and others selling shirts to defraying costs for the event.  Do the costs include cleanup and police details?  I think a full account should be provided to show everyone that the Tea Party was not done at the taxpayers expense.

mocking the obviously deranged (0.00 / 0)
That's good. That will win you points. I spent last week in the Statehouse arguing--in all futility, I know--for restoration of funds for the mentally ill and disabled. I know, I know, screw them, or the churches will take care of them, or whatever.

You are upset because you have to look at people with bad haircuts.

I think this post sums up better than anything the real difference between left and right.

Ha hah, mental illness--and one look at this guy and you know it--is so funny. But annoying, too, isn't it--having to deal with pain inthe ass people. Almost as bad as people who don't speak English, or speak it with the same precision you all do. Other funny things to post about: gay people, retarded people, and deaf people.

Keep it up. It lets everyone know what a bunch of stunted adolescents you are. Golly, I can only imagine the kinds of women who find people like you attractive.

Well... let's see. (0.00 / 0)
I'm certainly not going to advocate mocking anyone.  For example, I've clearly made my thoughts on the condition of homosexuality quite well known over recent days.  Yes, I do have gay family & friends and no I haven't bashed them lately.

Retarded people?  Actually, "retarded" is generally considered a rather rude way to phrase it nowadays.  My Knights of Columbus council - as they all do/should - fundraise with annual Tootsie Roll drives for those with intellectual disabilities.  The mentally ill?  Some of my very closest people suffer from mental illness.  My best friend works in Boston-area psychiatric hospitals.  Heck, at work today I just put through a small fundraising grant for a SouthCoast organization that supports the mentally ill.

Okay, I didn't know that my paternal grandparents could speak Portuguese until 10 years after my grandmother died (well, okay... I knew she was probably swearing SOMETHING once in awhile).  I never met the man but I'm told my maternal grandfather had a heck of a Norwegian accent but then again, if you spoke the language on his ship then that was fine.  However, if Ole Olsen heard you speak Norwegian in his house then he would toss you out.  After all, he found it extremely rude to talk a foreign language, even if it was his native tongue, in front of his wife & children.  Of course, the Puerto Ricans & the El Salvadorian help me practicar mi espanol while at work.  Oh, that reminds me... I need to write that personal letter of recommendation on the El Salvadorian's behalf as he seeks to finally become a United States citizen.

After I write that letter I'm going to need to polish up my notes & the speech I have to deliver on behalf of local Black history on Tuesday during a National Park Service training class for some of their newest volunteers for the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.  The particular subject will be Paul Cuffe: A Study of His Life & the Status of His Legacy in "Old Dartmouth".  Paul Cuffe was the subject of my 214-page Master's thesis and he was the son of a freed slave & a Wampanoag woman.  I strongly suggest you look him up.  After all, Governor Deval Patrick did proclaim January 17, 2009 to be a holiday in honor of Cuffe's 250th birthday.  Rep. Barney Frank even had a speech in Cuffe's honor inserted into the Congressional Record.  But wait, I'm a white Republican... oh, never mind.  Then again, and not to be outdone, thanks need to go to House Minority Leader Brad Jones, Reps. John Quinn & Michael Rodrigues for their assistance in having citations issued in honor of Cuffe as well!  But, I digress.

As far as deaf people go... I suppose I could mock myself.  After all, I'm the guy who had to ask a MassGOP staffer to tell Chairman Jennifer Nassour to either speak up or turn the volume up on the mic at the last State Committee meeting.  Comes with having 20 ear surgeries after being born 95% deaf in both ears.  I suppose I should've sat closer to the front but I like to hang in the back with the audience.

Of course, I'm also color blind, could probably drop a few pounds, and suffer from the occasional bad hair day but the point here is that trying to draw some "real difference" between the Right & Left, and then trying to insinuate that conservatives or Republicans are somehow Neanderthals is absurd and more telling of the opposition trying to make such insane claims.
