Sales Tax Hike Passes 108-51

by: Garrett Quinn

Mon Apr 27, 2009 at 23:48:02 PM EDT

(House roll call.  It's time to go on offense vs. these anti taxpayer representatives. - promoted by EaBo Clipper)

After several impassioned pleas about the children the House voted 108-51 to raise the state sales tax to 6.25%. The margin of victory for the takings coalition is significant because it is enough to overturn a veto by Governor Deval Patrick. Earlier in the day Patrick issued a letter indicating he would veto an increase in the state sales tax if it was not accompanied by reforms in state government.

The amendment still needs to pass the Senate.

Once again, the people of Massachusetts are treated like they're an ATM.

Here's the roll call suckaaaas

Roll Call Vote (0.00 / 0)
Please post the roll call vote or a link to it if it is available.  That will be an excellent guide to vulnerable incumbents.

Can't find it anywhere (0.00 / 0)
Sent in a request to obtain it though, and once I get it I'll try to post it here.

I think Republican Town Committees and County Committees should consider running Press Releases slamming their local dems for supporting this. It's time to recruit some candidates, and this may just do the trick.

MassGOP House Caucus Press Conference (0.00 / 0)
Here is a link to NECN's coverage of the income tax hike objectors, including a fairly lengthy coverage of the Massachusetts Republican House Caucus and their press conference yesterday:

BUSINESS: Sales tax center stage of Mass. budget battle

House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. released the following statement tonight after the adoption of an amendment to increase the state's sales tax (0.00 / 0)
Disappointment and disillusionment does not even begin to describe how my caucus and I are feeling following tonight's adoption of the amendment to increase the state's sales tax. For those Democrats who stood beside us, we applaud and appreciate their efforts to do what is right for the citizens of the Commonwealth. For those who support this ridiculously regressive tax increase, I say shame on them.

We are in the midst of a deep economic recession, and while the federal government is putting money back into the economy, Democrats here in Massachusetts are reaching into taxpayers' pocketbooks and wallets and grabbing whatever they can get their hands on. Since the beginning of the economic downturn, the Commonwealth has lost thousands of jobs, and if this sales tax increase goes into effect, we can expect thousands of others to lose their jobs as well.

As the debate and vote tonight, not one meaningful reform has been signed into law and put into motion. We, as a governing body owe it to the hard working taxpayers of Massachusetts to accomplish real reform first.

MassGOP Press Releases (0.00 / 0)
The Massachusetts Republican Party has been churning out press release after press release over the past several days in regards to fighting for lower taxes & less government spending.  If you're on their mailing list then no less than 7 came out since oh say the 22nd.

If you're not on the mailing list (and if you're not, please contact either Communications Director Barney Keller or let me know your address & I'll forward it on over) then you can always follow the activity over at www.MassRootsGOP.com.

In fact, I updated the blog earlier today with all the latest news & info!  I do try to post them all the same day as the original release but occasionally this State Committeeman does get daily distracts that slow me down.

RMG also has a running list of MassGOP updates as soon as I post them over at www.MassRootsGOP.com.

Christy & the Boston Globe (0.00 / 0)
Christy is now a blogger here & can answer for himself but here is what the Boston Globe had to say about him & his position on the sales tax hike:

Christy Mihos, who has declared he will run as a Republican, also opposes increasing the sales tax.

Oh my God (0.00 / 0)
It better not pass the Senate.  I can't believe they think it is easy to make merchants and customers pay a little extra.  What assholes.  We know 5%, everything is programmed for 5%, this is going to be such a pain in the ass.

Is that Governors Commission on LGBT Youth still getting a million dollars a year?  How about the Tourism and Movie boards?  And the various executive councils for the biotech industry and state research money?  Those should all be brought down to zero, or less than zero.  Let's just bill Hollywood and LGBT youth instead.

Pleasantly surprised by Calter, other S.S. dems (0.00 / 0)
Rep. Webster's "NO" vote was a give, but I am pleasantly surprised by Rep. Calter's "NO" vote. Perhaps there is hope for him yet. Or, more likely, he is being a shrewd politician like our good governor. Props go out to other South Shore dems, including Jamie Murphy, Joe Driscoll and Quincy's Ayers and Tobin.

Looks like rookies and newbies voted 'no' to save their lives... (0.00 / 0)
Arciero, Calter, Campbell, Curran, Fallon, McMurtry, Puppolo, Rice, and others.

This is all a game folks.  Deval votes to veto and looks like a moderate.  The Dem led legislature votes to override and the rookies blame the unchallenged veterans.  The Governor and the rookies and newbies hit the campaign trial and say "Hey, I voted against it!"

Nobody is willing or able to challenge the incumbent Dems and all the liberals get what they want.

More of that "Change we can believe in!"

If you disagree with me you are a racist homophobe.

THATS IT PEOPLE TIME TO RECRUIT! (0.00 / 0)
RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT!!

Even if they voted right, ask yourself how they'd of voted if leadership put on the heat! There are some good Dems up there but they don't number too high!

Gregoire vote yes. (5.00 / 1)

Withouth competition on Beacon Hill, Dems have last laugh (4.50 / 2)
from
Members joked about the electoral risks in backing higher taxes. Endorsing the tax hike in his maiden speech, Rep. Jonathan Hecht (D-Watertown) said he had been elected last September without facing a Republican opponent.

"Perhaps that will change after this vote," Hecht said, drawing laughs from colleagues.

The electoral system is rigged in favor of the tax consuming crowd even though they are bellyaching about the regressive nature of sales taxes.
Some advocates said the sales tax proposal was improperly designed. Judy Meredith, a human services advocate leading a push for significant tax increases, called the House plan "neither adequate nor balanced," arguing that the revenue would not be enough and that lower-income residents would be disproportionately affected by the higher rate.
Judy Meredith and the human services industrial complex are ready to shift the tax elsewhere and ignore the spending reform sorely needed.

"Work is the essence of Man."

James Vallee, Geraldo Alicea, Bill Bowles, Garrett Bradley, James Cantwell, Thomas Conroy, Stephen D'Amico James Dwyer, Carolyn Dykema, John Fernandes, Ann-Margaret Ferrante, Barry Finegold, Ann Gobi, Danielle Gregoire, Kate Hogan, Jason Lewis, Barbara L'Italien, Allen McCarthy, CHARLES MURPHY, Harold Naughton, Matthew Patrick, Sarah Peake, Alice Peisch, Tom Sannicandro, Theodore Speliotis, Harriette Stanely, and Cleon Turner.

YOU THINK YOU ARE SAFE HUH????? Safe enough to show your true colors?

I don't know but I dont think the places these folks are from (places like ATTLEBORO, FRANKLIN, MASHPEE, and GLOUCESTER)are really going to enjoy a tax hike about now. Especially when guys like Arciero, Calter, Driscoll, Canavan, Garry, Harkins, Kujo, McMurtrey, Miceli, Rogers, and Torrisi dont think its safe enough to vote for higher taxes. And some of these folks are from Republican towns like Brockton, Lawrence, Needham and Quincy. (Though I understand people like Miceli, Garry, and Rogers are probably really against higher taxes, and are Republicans in disguise)

I think its time the rest of these Moonbats get a little wake up call.

THANK YOU ALL 19 REPUBLICANS FOR VOTING NO
and THANKS FOR NOTHING ALL YOU LOUSY BUMS

Fight the Sales Tax! (0.00 / 0)
If you didn't get it in your email inbox or see it over at www.MassRootsGOP.com then well, here you go:

Yesterday, the Democrat Party voted overwhelmingly to raise the sales tax by 25%.

This tax hike will hurt small businesses and working families even more than the Democrat liberal tax-and-spend policies have already. Click here to see if your Representative voted to hike the sales tax by 25%.

Governor Patrick deserves zero credit for threatening to veto this tax. If he had his way, we'd have the highest gas tax in the nation, and higher taxes on candy, beer, meals, and hotels.

We need your help to get the word out: this is NOT a debate over the sales tax, this is a debate over WHICH tax.

Can you take five minutes right now and write a letter to the editor opposing a sales tax hike and the Governor's proposed gas tax hike?

We need grassroots supporters like you to cut through Governor Patrick's desperate political posturing. He wants people to think that he's opposed to higher taxes, but that's just not true!

Even the Liberal Media gets it! (0.00 / 0)
Okay, well they MOSTLY get it.  This paper still worships at the altar of Deval Patrick & hates Republicans, especially Republican governors, with a passion but here are some quotes from today's editorial from the Standard-Times:

But don't discount the role of Democrats in decades of wasteful spending. From the Big Dig to a pension system notoriously too generous in certain agencies and circumstances, there's plenty of blame to go around.

If Massachusetts raises the sales tax now, before the Legislature has approved reforms in pensions, ethics, municipal workers' health insurance and the administration of the transportation system, some of the urgency will be gone. Before you know it, we'll be back to the status quo.

Any SouthCoast legislator who votes for a sales-tax increase before reforms are complete is putting political considerations ahead of good judgment.

http://www.southcoasttoday.com...

Of course, only 3 (1 Republicans & 2 Democrats) out of 11 SouthCoast State Reps (the remainder all Democrats) voted against the sales tax increase (another was apparently the lone no show at for the vote).

Senators Mark Montigny, Joan Menard, & Mark Pacheco... what are YOU going to do?!

7 Most Vulnerable Dems (0.00 / 0)
The following list are the 7 Freshman Dems who voted for the Sales Tax hike and failed to get 60% of the vote in 2008.  I have included their district and percentage from the last election.

Gregoire, 4th Middlesex, 48%
Hogan, 3rd Middlesex, 48%
Dykema, 8th Middlesex, 52%
Lewis, 31st Middlesex, 52%
Bowles, 2nd Bristol, 54%
Ashe, 2nd Hampden, 54%
Benson, 37th Middlesex, 56%

http://www.boston.com/news/pol...

Also, Tim Madden voted yes.  He is an unenrolled voter who caucuses with the Democrats.  In 2008 he won a 4 way race for the Barnstable, Dukes & Nantucket seat with 41% of the vote.  There was no Republican in the field.

Bob Hedlund for Minority Leader.
