Senate Rejects Delay On Dog Racing Ban

by: Garrett Quinn

Thu May 21, 2009 at 16:29:20 PM EDT

Senate has voted to not delay the implementation of the dog racing ban, according to State House News and other media outlets.

It appears the legislature is deciding to no longer tell the voters to screw. Senator Marc Pacheco, a big labor and government supporter, sponsored the budget amendment. It went down like a Tijuana whore 29-8.

Reports said that Pacheco emphasized that AFL-CIO considered the vote a "labor vote." So you can add ignoring the will of the voters to the long list of "labor votes." Labor votes include things like raising taxes, increasing spending, restricting free enterprise, endangering public safety, supporting graft, etc.

Pacheco's slot amendment also went down in flames 6-31 (0.00 / 0)
This does not mean it won't come up later.  It was probably only to placate "his constituents".  The real vote on this stuff will be in September.  The senate queen wasn't going to have any of it now.

GAMBLING AMENDMENTS UP FIRST, AS FINISH LINE EYED FOR THURSDAY
Senators expect to address early Thursday budget amendments promoting expanded gambling and delaying a voter-mandated ban on dog racing. Asked whether she would support the first proposal, Senate President Therese Murray replied, "No, not in the budget." During a brief News Service interview after the session recessed Wednesday evening, Murray said she also would not back Sen. Marc Pacheco's bid to postpone by two years the dog racing ban. "I think it would be hard to go back on a ballot question," she said. The Senate is due to return at 10 a.m., with 425 amendments remaining. Senate Ways and Means Committee Chairman Steven Panagiotakos told senators early Wednesday evening that he envisioned a completed fiscal 2010 budget bill "hopefully by tomorrow."  As the Corner Office continued to criticize the pace and details of the Legislature' s work, Panagiotakos defended the Senate, saying pension, transportation and ethics reform bills, all in conference committees or heading there, were "heading for home."
