Breaking: Andy Card Closer to Running for US Senate - Formal Announcement Within Days

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Wed Sep 09, 2009 at 19:07:35 PM EDT

( - promoted by DD4RP)

UPDATE: Secretary Card is a couple of days out from a formal Announcement.

Secretary Card is on, "there is not one family that owns this seat, nor one party."

"Phenomenal desire to tell you I am Running for United States Senate but.......  I know what it means to run the decisions are not political, it is the personal decisions that frame it, ...". Secretary Card is talking about his wife, who was assigned a church in McLean VA.  He is committed to helping her answer her call.  Because of her work and his love for her is impacting him, he has not made up his mind, and will make up his mind in the near future.  He realizes that other people are thinking about this seat.  There is no Democrat is waiting for Andy Card, so no Republican should wait for Senator Card.

Michael Sullivan, Scott Brown.  Andy Card says Scott Vrown is right to consider the race.  Don't interfere with the tough decisions other people have to make.

Andy Card has entered the Newton Marriott.  Red Mass Group has learned that Secretary Card will indeed make an announcement of his candidacy for the US Senate Seat tonight.

Video of the announcement to come when available

Interesting Couple of Days ... (0.00 / 0)
I googled Andy and got this ..

In Massachusetts yet, is he kidding?

And yet... (0.00 / 0)
...any negative information about Obama, no matter how true is curiously screened from Wikipedia.

hmmmm...  Interesting

Problem Is .. (5.00 / 2)
My guess is Andy is proud to have that on top of his resume. That is the bigger problem.

Yes! Yes! Yes! (0.00 / 0)
Who is going to be running this campaign?

Might As Well Be Senator Sorghum (0.00 / 0)
This is a major wake up call to anyone that thought the national party had a flipping clue. Rebuilding the party to be a mirror image of the past ... yeah, that will fly.
Hope this doesnt turn into a drag on the governors race, there are some GOP ideas that actualy have traction , if we could distance ourselves from those other ideas.
I guess not yet.

Suggestion About What? (0.00 / 0)
Salvaging a good governors race ? ... Hmm .
It may be a good thing that the senate race is so short cycle. If Andy loses real quick and quiet people might not remember that they hated GW way more than they do Deval.
Some of these people are more worthy of indicting than nominating.

Does Card have a war chest? (0.00 / 0)
If not, he's starting from the same financial point as Sen. Brown.  Unless Card is a multi-millionaire, like Mihos, who can self fund.

Obviously Andy Card has more connections to raise money, but wouldn't be nice to think that he (and the RNC) would be willing to tap those connections for a solid Republican candidate that didn't have the most recent Bush administration tied around his neck.

Things have to go almost perfect for a Republican to win this seat.  I just wonder if the image of the Bush administration is one hurdle that shouldn't be self-imposed.

Disaster (0.00 / 0)
I respect Andy Card and I have nothing but respect for President Bush but general perceptions amongst the electorate are more powerful than my opinions. Andy Card wont get any more votes against the Democrat nominee than Ken Chase did against Ted Kennedy in the last race. That would be an embarrassment to the party and to a very fine man who served his country well in the last administration. More importantly Mr. Card's deliberations are sifting out the Republican field of some very good potential candidates who will step out of the way for someone who can raise money on a national level. I dont even think Karl Rove would agree that Card could win this seat.

Anyways...

Did this speech feel to you like an apology for letting us down?  I was very touched by his devotion to his wife's ministry.  I'm not so sure he means to run, and really, I'd be enthusiastic for Brown.

That said, if Card runs, he has my support, but I just wonder if this is the slam-dunk being reported...

Its not (0.00 / 0)
He just announced he won't run. http://www.bostonherald.com/ne...
So, is it Scott Brown, or no strong R now? I hope he will help Brown with his campaign. This is starting to look bad. Everyone thought Healey was definitely going to run. She didn't. We thought Mihos was definitely going to run. He isn't. We thought Card was definitely going to run. He isn't. Yikes.

Cheer Up!

Brown is going to announce tomorrow at 2PM on Beacon Hill.

Healey was just a name that was thrown out there early, and went away just as quickly (with a few others).  I was never quite sure where Card was, and apparently Mihos was in the race for about 8 minutes :)

I had a good feeling about Brown.  I recall an interview he did long ago when it was becoming public knoweldge just how ill Ted Kennedy really was.  He said (paraphrasing) "Well, we never know what will happen with Kenndy's seat".  I believe the response was to a question about whether he would ever consider running for Governor (it's all so foggy now).  I suspected back then he may have been mulling the idea over.
