Scott Brown on today's Senate Action

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Tue Sep 22, 2009 at 15:32:39 PM EDT

A short time ago the Massachusetts Senate voted 24-16 to give interim appointment power to the Democratic Governor for the currently vacant U.S. Senate Seat.  Scott Brown had this to say on the floor of the Senate today.

"There is nothing more sacred in a democracy than its election laws. They are what gives people confidence that their government is the servant of the people, not the master. Election laws are not meant to perpetuate the power of people in government. They should never be changed on a whim, or when it suits the convenience of the political party in power at the time. It is the responsibility of those of us in government to protect the integrity of the election laws. If our laws are seen as serving a partisan interest, this perception can destroy public trust in our system. The law must treat all political parties and candidates equally without discrimination or favoritism.

Sadly, that is not the case with this bill.

I think it's time for someone to tell the truth here. What's really going on is the national Democratic Party wants a rubber stamp in Washington. There are some important votes coming up in the U.S. Senate on issues like healthcare reform, cap and trade and immigration reform. White House aides and congressional leaders have been burning up the phone lines to lobby for this bill. The reason is simple: they need someone in the U.S. Senate to vote the way they want them to vote on these issues, and not necessarily in the interest of the people of Massachusetts. They want a "yes" vote on healthcare reform, even if that means higher taxes and a new public insurance option that means more government involvement in our lives. They want a "yes" vote on cap and trade, even if it will raise energy costs on the average family in this country by $1,761 a year. They want a "yes" vote on immigration reform, even if it means amnesty for illegal aliens.

Five years ago, the Democrats in the Legislature took away from a Republican governor the power to appoint a senator in the event of a vacancy. Now that there's a Democratic governor, they want to restore that power. It's impossible to escape the conclusion that the law is being manipulated to give one political party a strategic advantage over another. It's time we stopped playing political games. This bill does not strengthen our democracy; it cripples it. I hope it is defeated."

even Scott Brown is quoting that completely false number of $1,761. You can debate the merits of the cap and trade legislation all you want, but that number is not even remotely close to reality. It was calculated by a blogger who completely negated subsidies families would receive from the revenues generated by selling carbon credits. The methodology used to generate that number is that of a 5th grader, and Scott Brown should know better that to use it and discredit his otherwise decent speech.

Dont hold your breath waiting for YOUR subsidy.

Is the idea that a family (0.00 / 0)
could get paid for not using energy?  That would be cool, how much would I get if I somehow stopped watching TV and reading blogs all day?

The 11 Dems who voted "No" (0.00 / 0)
All five state Senate Republicans opposed the bill and were joined by Sens. Stephen Brewer (D-Barre), Jennifer Flanagan (D-Leominster), John Hart Jr. (D-South Boston), Brian Joyce (D-Milton), Michael Moore (D-Boston), Richard Moore (D-Uxbridge), Michael Morrissey (D-Quincy), James Timilty (D-Walpole), Susan Tucker (D-Andover), Steven Baddour (D-Methuen), and - as he promised in his letter - Panagiotakos.

Emergency Preamble requires 2/3 (0.00 / 0)
Just heard Scott Brown on Howies show.

They don't as of this time, have the 2/3 vote to push through an emergency preamble.

The Herald says there is some system the Governor can use to claim an "emergency" with the Secretary of State.. you know, like a flood, or storm, people dying in the street, or a political appointment needs to be made.. a life or death emergency.

So, its not over yet.

And the Democrats say Bush stole the 2000 election?????? (0.00 / 0)
They just eliminated the need for an election, after voting for the need to create one.

Hey Democrats, who are the hypocrites now?

BTW How many Democrats are currently APPOINTED and not elected Senator? (0.00 / 0)

I was luckily listening to Howie Carr and at home when this broke. I have list of all MA sens and reps & checked off the 11 dems that voted against it. I called and thanked each one.  I live in Everett and one of the first offices I called had woman that also lives in Everett answering phone. She told me that they were harassed by robocalls, calls were forwarded to the office when people were calling someone else and that they had lots of union members calling and harassing them.

Thank Obama for, once again, getting involved in things he should keep out of.

I called Patrick's office too and told the man that he is on the way out, we can't wait until next year.  He's not going to win as it is.
