Artificial Sperm and Eggs Created from Stem Cells for First Time

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Thu Oct 29, 2009 at 06:19:24 AM EDT

While I have always thought the reasons John Howard has given for being against genetic engineering were flawed. The very fact that the genetic engineering he has spoken about is happening is now indisputable.  The Daily Mail of London has reported that scientists have created egg and sperm cells from stem cells.

Human eggs and sperm have been grown in the laboratory in research which could change the face of parenthood.

It paves the way for a cure for infertility and could help those left sterile by cancer treatment to have children who are biologically their own.

But it raises a number of moral and ethical concerns. These include the possibility of children being born through entirely artificial means, and men and women being sidelined from the process of making babies.

No more ooga booga, this is real science, unfortunately.

has nothing to do with John Howard's delusion of someone taking away your right to create a baby using your own unmodified  gametes or his delusion that the procreation is a marriage right.

....booga booga.

I am glad that someone can cure sterility such that otherwise healthy people can ALSO have kids using their unmodified genetic material.

This has something to do with those delusions, in that this is a necessary step towards making genetically modified gametes and reversing the imprinting to allow same-sex procreation.  As it stands, though, it has nothing to do with anything, it was just people playing around with our money.  It did not cure anyone's sterility yet, your gladness that "someone can cure sterility" reveals your bias and delusions.

I'm not sure these will ever be ethical to use to have children, even if they are unmodified and just used to cure sterility.  It would be better to need to avoid sterility and stay healthy, there is a danger that a cure for sterility like this would be too profitable and allow for too much government control and therefore less care would go into preventing infertility.

And note that by saying it's a "delusion" that procreation is a marriage right, you are yourself denying marriages the right to create a baby with the couple's own genes.  Marriage must continue to allow the couple to procreate using their own genes, we shouldn't let people call it a delusion that married couples have a right to conceive children with their own genes.

Is John Howard still running for Governor or Senate?  Its not to late to change a vote.....

As a write-in (0.00 / 0)
I wasn't up to the task of collecting signatures, and help never materialized like I was hoping, but I will still be campaigning as a write-in for US Senate, to go to Washington to introduce the Egg and Sperm Civil Union Compromise bill to resolve the marriage debate once and for all.

Sorry about giving up on getting signatures, I wish I had kept pushing.

Oh yeah (0.00 / 0)
because, when seeing that people are researching stem cells and tweaking them to differentiate as "cell x, y, or z"....making the prediction that they're going to tweak a stem cell to be "cell x, y, or z"......takes so much freakin' predictive intellect.

.....and that y'all fall for sensationalist headlines is hilarious.

OMG, THEY'RE GONNA START MAKING BABIES WITHOUT HUMANS AND CREATE A FREAKIN' CLONE PLANET!!!

I like the PRIMARY SOURCE headline and article better....more science, less bullshit.

I was astounded that people couldn't see this coming too (0.00 / 0)
And they won't make GE'd babies or clones if we prohibit it.

Thanks for this post Eabo (0.00 / 0)
The reasons I am against genetic engineering include: it would be expensive and unsustainable and waste energy and waste medical resources and require government regulation and threaten natural conception rights and equality and dignity and cause angst and depression.  And that's all right now, just by being researched and being a legal possibility and being touted as the future of reproduction.  If it were to actually happen, then there are more reasons like the risks to the babies, the gap between gene-rich and gene-poor like in Gattaca, and how it would probably become a mandatory expensive entitlement.

What did you disagree with?  Did you think I was opposed just because it would be used by gay couples?
