Poll: Baker Running Mate

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Baker is hoping to choose a candidate for lieutenant governor this weekend and is considering Senate minority leader Richard R. Tisei of Wakefield, House minority leader Bradley H. Jones Jr. of North Reading, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz, and state Representative Karyn E. Polito of Shrewsbury.

Here at RMG we have already bantered this idea around quite a bit.  However, now we have a real list to choose from.  Have fun fighting it out.

Tisei (0.00 / 0)

Is my choice.  Really smart guy on tax, public finance and jobs issues.

Can one run for Lt. Gov. and the legislature concurrently?  If not, I would be more likely to support someone if they have lined up a strong candidate to replace him/her.

No (0.00 / 0)
Unlike the United States Senate and V.P. you can't run for LG and State Senate at the same time.

"Victory is Mine!" - Stewart Gilligan Griffin.

Not entirely true... (0.00 / 0)
It's my understanding that each state has laws that allows or prevents their US Senator from running as both US Senator and VP.  In 2000 and in 1960 Lieberman and Johnson had that ability.  But I do think it varies by state.

[ Parent ]
Fair enough (0.00 / 0)
I should have said that there is no federal law or constitutional ban on it.

That is the unspoken dilemma for Republicans in MA... (0.00 / 0)
There are plenty of statewide openings to go for...LG, Auditor, Treasure and probably AG...but not enough of a Republican bench to fill them.  Sure RMG posters will swagger around here how that in this "Republican year" that we'll win all the statewide offices, refill the St. Senate seats and then some.

Ya, sure anything is possible...like Tarr, Tisei, and Hedlund running statewide and losing, while the Dems pick up their seat.  In the world of politics being local...that is a real possibility also.

Tisei district (0.00 / 0)
MIDDLESEX AND ESSEX. - Malden, Melrose, wards 1 to 5, inclusive, Reading, Stoneham and Wakefield, in the county of Middlesex; and Lynnfield, in the county of Essex.

Malden is the largest municipality and it just doesn't vote Republican.  Melrose is around the state average.

The Northern part of the district (Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, Lynnfield) votes much more Republican.  Lynnfield is one of the most Republican towns in the state; McCain received 55% of the vote.  Any GOP candidate would have to run up large margins in those towns to win.

"Victory is Mine!" - Stewart Gilligan Griffin.

Tough district, terrible choice (0.00 / 0)
Tisei walks, we lose it. No bench, no backups, just lost.

Down to 4 possibly three in the state senate if we lose Brown's seat too.

Good luck getting your agenda through Charlie.

SSR is right on the money -- Look at Tisei's vote in 2008 (0.00 / 0)
Tisei holds his town of Wakefield well. Take a look at some stats from his home base of Wakefield! He polled 22% higher than Obama/Biden in a Democratic year! Go figure.

PaHahaahahaahahaa...... (5.00 / 1)
The two legislative "leaders" bring nothing to the table.  and they all cover the same area!  I don't know much about Cruz, but he has run countywide in Plymouth so that's good balance.  Polito is from Central MA and would counter Tim Murray or bring geographic balance to the ticket.  Plus, she's a woman--which worked for Romney and Cellucci.  Picking Tisei would be like Jane Swift picking Guerriero......

Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.

[ Parent ]
The issue with each of these candidates (5.00 / 3)
The problem with Tisei, Jones, and Polito would be the major vacuum left behind. WHEN Baker wins he is going to need allies in the House and Senate to get his agenda through the General Court and on his desk quickly. Both Jones and Tisei would be the guys to get it done with Polito as the junk yard dog who can get on the House floor and articulate and disseminate the message clearly (she has proven effective at doing just that already).
The House and Senate can just not afford to lose another member of the General Court. Especially considering Lew Evangelidis is going to run of Worcester County Sherriff.  What good is there having a Republican governor if there are not enough Republican members to even force a roll call vote?

So short sighted its not even funny (0.00 / 0)
We won't have anyone left in the senate to make objections or even file legislation on behalf of the Governor!

Forget forcing a roll call, will there be anyone there even to turn out the lights!

Lt. Gov. (4.00 / 1)
Karyn is the obvious smart choice.... articulate, intelligent, personable, and a woman (could pull a lot of votes Charlie's way with mom's, etc. etc.).  Helps to balance Charlie.  And she has produced statewide results with Jessica's Law.  She fights hard for all citizens, including the ones who are most vulnerable.  In addition, she brings a strong voice from the western part of the state, which the others do not.

I can sell KP (0.00 / 0)
I can sell Karyn Polito to the apolitical masses.  Jessica's Law is key to that.  To an apolitical person yo first explain what it is, then the Democrats have to try and explain why they oppose it.  In Massachusetts someone could still rape a small child and serve no jail time and the Democrats like it that way.

KP also has a history of accomplishment creating our charitable license plates.  Apolitcal people are already very familiar with the Red Sox and other plates and what they do.

I did cringe a little bit with your "from the western part of the state" comment.  Her district is east of Worcester.

"Victory is Mine!" - Stewart Gilligan Griffin.

You are such an asshole... (0.00 / 3)
...and i don't care what rules I'm violating and what the consequences are, because when someone writes, " In Massachusetts someone could still rape a small child and serve no jail time and the Democrats like it that way." that is the only appropriate response.  Well, actually there is an even more appropriate response...and it is far more vulgar (and equals the vulgarity of your drool).

[ Parent ]
In point of fact (5.00 / 2)
He is at least partly correct.  A child in my family was indeed raped at 5 and her attacker served no time (not one day...he got counseling, and probation).  And yes I'm a little bitter about that.

The only part that is questionable is whether the DEMS like it that way.  I wouldn't go that far, but I would say they have done everything to stop anything meaningful being done to prevent it.  Brown has sex offender rules changes that have been pending in the rules committee for years.  They fought tooth and nail when O'Reilly called MA out on Jessica's law, and they seem to believe that repeat sex offenders can be rehabbed back to normal sexual preferences.

Between the wishy washy sex offender laws and moonbat judges victims of sexual crimes have little hope in this state.

I sorry you family went through that... (0.00 / 0)
...and is still suffering from it today.  I suspect the terrible circumstances are similar to the link I provided below, illustrating why Mandatory Minimums often have negative, unforeseen consequences.

[ Parent ]
It was more a function (5.00 / 1)
Of the prosecutor knowing the style of the judge assigned and the age of the offender.  Prosecutor knew the judge would go light on the sentence even if found guilty and took the safe route to plead to indecent assault....figured it was the same penalty, and the plea was assured so why take a chance.  No time, no SORBS (discretionary for IA), probation and counseling for 4 months once a week. If it taught me nothing, I know the claims of "accidentally" ending up on the SORBS registry are mostly BS....you really have to screw up badly...usually multiple times to end up there.  Judges have pretty wide discretion and are often reluctant to use it on a first time offender.  Not sure if that is the case now, but it was a few years ago.

We have his DNA now at least and an STD screening he had to comply with as part of the terms.  2 years in and out of courtrooms.  It's why I'm am member of the NRA but do not own any guns at the moment (purely my choice).

Minor inconvenience for the offender, major trauma for the victim.  Didn't cost the scumbag a cent either....I on the other hand lost countless days waiting in courtroom hallways, untold dollars in counseling that was not covered, and spouse ended up doing a stint in a psych hospital for PTSD in the middle of the whole ordeal.

If I had that period of my life to do all over again I would have invested in a Louisville Slugger and exacted justice in a much more expedient manner.  There is sometimes no satisfaction when one plays by the rules, other than knowing I did not violate them.  Were it not for one compassionate priest who spent untold hours with me reminding me how much my family needed me, I would probably be in jail today.  He gave permission to envision any manner of violent outcomes as long as I did not act on them.  It was the best possible advice during that time.

The truth hurts (0.00 / 0)
1) Obviously if the Democrats actually wanted to change this they could.  They hold 90% in the State house and the Governor.  Who's going to stop them?

2) When they actually had a chance to and voted on this in 2008 they voted it DOWN.  They actively said "NO."  They do not want the crime of raping a small child to require jail time.

Voting records are real.  Democrats do like it this way.  Sorry the truth hurt you so.

Man Proposes, God Disposes... (5.00 / 2)

Again, it's worth noting that the gubernatorial choice is about as binding as the Gov. budget, House One.

The 'choice' is a press release, indicting his personal preference.  It is not binding on primary voters (ask Jim Rappaport).  Additionally, the LG candidate must gather own signatures and finance own campaign (ask Reed Hillman).

In his quest for 'eventuality', Baker will merely piss off the adherents of those he did not choose, let alone those who had secret hopes and weren't mentioned.

Hello RMG; first time / long time....... (2.50 / 2)
Baker-Tisei? Are you kidding me?

Mr. Baker is so moderate, I've been having a tough time convincing myself that he's a true enough Republican for me to support him. This seals the deal for me - NO.

Tisei's district is just north of where I live, so I hear a lot about him from friends in this area. His big claim to fame is supporting the Stone Zoo at a time when other true conservatives have been fighting for state budget cuts. Other than that, he keeps going back and forth on GOP issues depending on how it suits his purposes. I've heard that Jones is pretty much the same, but he's a little further away from me so I don't know for sure.

I understand that a far-right ticket just won't win here. But, don't we want an actual "Republican" to be the Republican candidate?

The other thing is that I'm tired of GOP candidates picking Lt.Gov.'s again and again. Why don't we just have an open primary so we can vote for someone we like? We're all adults, let us decide as a party how we want the ticket balanced.

I don't know much about Cruz and Polito. Cruz seems solid but it would be a shame to lose a GOP DA. Polito seems really good on policy and she's in the news a lot. I think it would be great to have a woman on the ticket. So, if that's the list, why not just pick Polito and get on with it?

Baker-Tisei is a waste of time. Unless he changes his mind, I'm with Mihos.

Gotta be Polito (0.00 / 0)
She's got just as much of a profile outside the Beacon Hill crowd as any of these other guys, maybe more. Plus she has way more room to grow- even though she's very conservative, she's also has strong moderate appeal, winning and holding a D-leaning house district for years.

Plus, honestly, considering the national press the R party has been getting lately... it'd look reaaaalll good for you guys to put a woman on the ticket, so long as she's as good or better than the male alternatives.

Let's face it. The R party needs to do better with MA women, if it's going to be competitive, now and into the future. Part of any strategy to do that involves showcasing and promoting smart, competent, eloquent women, preferably on the younger side and with kids, so they are easy to relate too.

Seriously, take it from this non-Republican. Putting a second older white guy on the ticket will not get you where you need to be with the suburban woman vote, which is a must-win for you.

Tisei all the way! (5.00 / 2)
I've lived in Senator Tisei's district for 25 years and I am behind him 100%!  Baker's best choice to win the election by far.  Here is what I know.  He has won 13 straight elections in a democratic area.  His biggest city, Malden has 6% registered republicans and his district has about 10% as a whole.  He has a way of attracting democrat and independent votes and a very loyal following.

I am a rock rib conservative and sometimes disagree with his stand on social issues but I can tell you on just about everything else he is a true conservative.  I did a little research this morning, A+ ranking from the NRA, really good CLT rating, solid on business and spending issues.

What I really like is that he drives Deval Patrick crazy.  Deval sends his lapdog Tim Murray after him all the time.  There is no one more quoted or a more effective spokesman.  Best of all when I call to rant about any issue he always returns my call.

BRAD JONES (3.00 / 1)

Brad Jones: has talent and brains.

Politito: let's face it, we like her, but she's being picked for one reason (or is it one set?).

I'm still wondering
who is going to run with Christy Mihos?

Hey, you put up the short list, not me. Given a choice between "voting for the woman" or voting for the guy who is the house minority leader, well, who's got more experience at truly getting things done?

That said, again I say, I'm looking forward to seeing if Mihos can somehow overcome the BostonGOP's coronation of Baker (rigging of the convention to stomp out Mihos).  Should be an interesting time.  Hope there's popcorn.

I disagree with you lack of analysis on Rep. Polito (0.00 / 0)
Why wouldn't Baker consider Rep. Susan Giffords (R-Wareham), or Rep. Betty Poirer (R-N. Attleboro) if it was all about the "one reason"?

The reality is Rep. Polito is more than just another Kerry Healey, she has actually made a name for herself in the State House. The same cannot be said to the same extent for the other women not mentioned here.

She's a good Conservative choice, give her a chance...

TISEI! A combination of progressive values with a conservative governing ethic. This is the winning brand for Republicans outside of the Deep South. (4.00 / 2)
As demographics continue to change, even the Deep South will shift in this direction.

It would be a shame to lose his Senate seat, of course, but I am confident we can find a competitive candidate for his district. Worst comes to worst, I'm confident we can retake the 3rd Middlesex with another bright progressive Republican, Chelmsford Selectman Eric Dahlberg. We have some excellent Senate prospects elsewhere in the state, and some in districts which haven't traditionally been fertile territory for Republican candidates.

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Tisei's positions on the social issues mirror those of Charlie Baker. This is a wise strategy, as the worst thing that could happen is to have these wedge issues at the forefront of a campaign focused on the Patrick administration's failure to deliver on the bread and butter issues, and our pragmatic conservative solutions.

North of the Mason-Dixon (0.50 / 2)

What's the matter? Deval isn't liberal enough for you?
You have to toss Baker and Tisei together?

Hmmm, perhaps Cahill stands a chance after all...

But heck, if all we want are social liberals,
we might as well be Democrats.

A cannibalistic Baker Administration set to lose first legislative seat of his administration... already! (0.00 / 0)
This is such a bad move that its not even funny. If this is a sign of things to come, watch the rest of the caucuses get appointed upon Baker's potential election leaving nobody left in the caucuses.

Tisei? We lose that seat and never get it back. Taking us down to THREE in the State Senate potentially if Brown leaves too (I can more understand a statewide candidacy for Brown, but LG is a supporting role don't waste it on someone who is already needed!).

Jones/Polito? Anyones guess if we lose those seats too, though not the certainty Tisei's is. Have they groomed successors, do they have a machine that can put someone else in? We all know the Beacon Hill Brigade(save a few) is TERRIBLE at doing this, so I have major qualms about this. There should be someone impressive ready to roll NOW, if they're to be picked.

Cruz? Fine pick, but I'm not sure we retain the position of DA in Plymouth County if he steps up considering this is his election year. Best we could hope for here is that County Sheriff (and former ADA) Joe McDonald runs for that instead... which only means we potentially lose the Sheriff's seat instead since he's up this year too!

Charlie for God's sake don't take this cannibalistic attitude toward the Republican state house caucus... you need them BIG TIME.

Hmm... (0.00 / 0)
I believe Rep. Brad Jones (R-North Reading) lives in Tisei's district, and already shares a number of towns with his Senate district.

Rep. Richard Ross (R-Wrentham) is the logical successor for Scott Brown in Norfolk, Bristol & Middlesex.

The Jones and Ross House districts are some of the most Republican in the state.

[ Parent ]
Nope (0.00 / 0)
Rep. Jones is in Sen. Tarr's district. Im not sure that will be the case in 2012 however, North Reading might have to go somewhere else, and it would probably be Sen. Tisei's district.

[ Parent ]
Its something to make damn sure of (0.00 / 0)
I have a hard time seeing Ross step up to the challenge.

I have a hard time seeing Jones step up for State Senate when he currently sits atop leadership in the House, its a bruiser of a State Senate district, and Jones actually lives in Tarr's district North Reading.

Forget the House seats taking care of themselves, winning a State Senate race is a gargantuan task. Theres a reason why we haven't won one since Brown ran in a special election in 04: its difficult. You need a voraciously hardworking candidate like Brown. You see Ross and Jones burning up phone lines fundraising, and knocking doors around the district? Maybe they will if they run, but they may decide they don't have it in them.

Alright of these choices (0.00 / 0)
Its got to be Karyn Polito. She has some exposure to the media and a good deal of charisma to appeal to Independents and those who vote on personality. She WILL put a dent in the Tim Murray Worcester bounce, and avoids the Male-Male GOP ticket that liberal ragsheets love to hate. Additionally, we really don't need to worry about her Seat. Selectman John Lebeaux (R-Shrewsbury) ran for the Senate Seat out there last year and won Shrewsbuy by a huge margin despite losing to Sen. Moore (D-Millbury), he could easily hold down that seat for us.

My second choice would be Tim Cruz, for no other reason that he is not Sen. Tisei or Rep. Jones. 5% of people will know who he is, but he can probably shore up some vote in Plymouth County.

I would NOT choose Sen. Tisei and Rep. Jones however. Sen. Tisei is too similar to Charlie Baker on the issues, and is too much of a political insider. Plus, we will NOT hold his seat. State Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Melrose) is waiting for him to leave (she already tried to knock him out once), and with Melrose in the bag, there is no way a Republican can win that Senate Seat. Tisei however is a smart and intelligent guy and would pull a lot of votes in Malden, Melrose, Wakefield for Baker. But the negatives outweigh the positives here.

Rep. Jones, despite his good work in the State House, Im sorry to say would be a BAD choice. He is just a mere State Rep, and Im afraid only those in N. Reading and Lynnfield would know who he is. (And they were voting Republican anyway). I also tend to doubt his charisma and charm, while his ideology is a-ok, this is too hard to overcome in a statewide election. Rep. Jones should stay in the House, and when redistricting comes along and N. Reading is forced to leave Sen. Tarr's district because of its growing size, he should run for the State Senate where he would be an absolute shoe-in.

No way on Polito (0.00 / 0)
Anybody but Polito, give me Jeff Perry or even Bob Hedlund, but please not Kayrn Polito.  The idea that she passed Jessica's law is laughable, the portions of Jessica's law that passed were passed in spite of her, and not because of her (Brad Jones saved her bacon on that one, but no one knows it because he is a standup guy).  She is not a party builder; she spent all last year scheming to take over the House leadership, and really nothing is more important than being the Assistant Minority Whip in the House, instead of running for an open senate seat. A seat that could have been hers if she simply "went for it" a seat that would have given her the prominence as the only female republican in the state senate and a race that would have given her visibility going into this election cycle.

So instead of party building she continued to tear down the party.  Look there is a sad truth as to why she wasn't chosen by Mitt Romney and why she won't be chosen by Charlie Baker, no one trusts her. She won't stay on message, she isn't a team player and her grand legislative accomplishment is creating a Red Sox license plate, can't believe she got support for that one among her colleagues.

At the end of the day these names aren't chess pieces on a board we don't get to move them around on a whim, there is risk in picking anyone.  Tisei has a good reputation as as a consensus builder that would fit the Cellucci model, even if he is not the darling of some of you.  Brad would be great, Perry would be even better, but I don't think they are going to happen, and while Cruz might be best has anyone asked him if he wants to run.  I think all of us who have never been a candidate forget how hard it is to make the leap, but the speculation is fun way to spend a Friday.

...I think your name says it all. And I would not be surprised if you are sitting in some office in the state house right now playing around on a computer paid for by the taxpayers. What exactly would you say were Brad Jones and Richard Tisei's "grand legislative accomplishments?" You probably know since you probably work for one of them.

There are a lot of things I agree with you on (0.00 / 0)
You are 100% correct, Jessica's Law is not her baby alone. Im not saying Jones hasn't done his job in the legislature, the reality is, he has done his job as a State Rep. However, running for Lt. Gov is not about knowing Parliamentarian manuevers and knowing how to count votes. Jones is a Legislative guy, he doesn't get out there and talk to the press, he works behind the scenes. The Governor and the Lt. Governor are in reality more of spokepersons than wheeler-dealers. They need to be able to pound the opposition and get public support so that a guy like Jones can do his manuevering. Without the fire of the Public the 139 Democrats in the House would never move on anything. Polito can light a fire under the asses of the Democratic Legislature and win people to our cause. Jones is a good Legislator, not a great choice for Lt. Governor.

While you are correct, I have no Idea why in the world she didn't run for the State Senate, she is hardly ripping the party down. The Leadership fight hurt the GOP how?? In fact, I think it actually helped. While Jones is solid Legislator, I think there was frustration in his leadership of the Caucus due to the Caucus's poor Electoral results and the lack of the Caucus's voice/importance in the legislature. Since that time, he has been much more proactive and apparent in the press. I think it made him make some adjustments that in the result give the people a better Representative. If only the Democrats were challenged more, they would represent us a whole lot better if they knew they had to try to keep their ass in Boston.

And Mitt didn't choose Polito in 2002 for one reason. She was only a Freshman Representative and she doesn't have Kerry Healey's Money!

You are correct, our GOP politicians aren't Chess Pieces, however, if we don't ever make any moves, you won't win anything either.

If Tisei launches Lt. Gov campaign, his current seat will definitely (5.00 / 1)
go Democratic and worse to a hyperliberal like Katherine Clark. It's a heavily Democratic district but Sen. Tisei has done well there. In 2008 with no opponents he garnered more votes that Obama! Tisei moves up that seat is lost to the GOP for a long, long time. There are no Republicans in the Tisei mold in that district that are currently viable. Senator don't do it.

I'd argue that having Tisei run under the GOP banner statewide is worth the consequences. (0.00 / 0)
If he can win in places like Malden, think about what he brings to the ticket in what will undoubtedly be a close election.

I think the percentage of those who support Deval Patrick's re-election will probably stay at about the same level throughout the campaign, as will the percentage of those opposed (a majority). The latter group will probably turn out strongly for Baker. The swing voters in this election will be disaffected moderates and independents. Some of them may never have voted for a Republican in their life, while others may have supported our statewide candidates in 1990 and beyond.

Picking Tisei might well be a move to outmaneuver Cahill among those disaffected moderate voters, whom he desperately needs to become his base. The voters in this category are predominantly those who refuse to even consider a candidate with an R next to his/her name, because they believe the face of the Republican Party is (insert name of least favorite right-wing celebrity and/or movement). He has that ability to reassert the New England Republican image in the eyes of mainstream voters. His presence on the ticket might well pay dividends down ballot in 2010 and 2012.

Pay attention to this polling result from a recent Suffolk Poll! (5.00 / 1)
I paraphrase: How likely are you to vote FOR or AGAINST your state representative?"

Results of registered voters
Dems 67 for - 22 against
Rep 31 for - 41 against
Ind/unenrolled - 49 for - 19 against

Pay attention. Despite all the anger out there about throwing the incumbents out there is a deep-seated comfort with state reps in their own districts.

Charlie shouldn't cannibalize the legislative leadership. It's tough enough being a Republican.

no Hacks (0.00 / 0)
Picking anybody from the legislature will be a tremendous blunder.  There's a remote chance one/all of them is not tainted by the hack-dom, but they all will be perceived to be.

Baker's best chance is to run on a total overthrow of the way things have been done.  Another business type would be way better than a hack.

All are bad strategic choices for the Party... (4.33 / 3)
because they leave gaps in their wake. Who are the "heir apparents" for any of these choices? Anyone?...hello?...all i hear are the crickets chirping because the answer is NOBODY! And thats why we are completely screwed as a party in this state. So....if the Baker folks have any sense at all they will choose someone who will not leave a legislative or county seat open and vulnerable. If Baker gets elected and can build the party then maybe in the future a candidate will have the luxury of choosing a geographically and/or politically popular running mate without having to worry about the impact on our power and influence. Why not go outside of politics and look for a popular or influential businessperson instead? If Pagliuca can run for US Senate without ever holding elected office why can't a prominent Republican do the same for Lt. Gov?

Afternoon Musings (0.00 / 0)

1. Although Mihos said that he would not run with anyone per se, he's probably better off if there are other contenders in the Lt. Gov race.  The reason is that Tisei, Jones and Polito have all already endorsed Baker.  It would be good for Mihos to have a sympathetic party in the race to avoid making the voters accept a bad marriage (Mihos + a Baker supporter) on the ticket.

2. Should someone enter the race before the results of the Jan 19th senate election are known, it looks like Brown, should he not be elected to the US Senate, would have to opt for a constitutional office, probably AG.

Presumably the list of from Baker. (5.00 / 2)
As part of a decision that will significantly shape next year's gubernatorial race, Republican Charles D. Baker is reviewing a final list of four potential running mates, including a district attorney, the GOP's two top legislative leaders, and a lawmaker known for her political candor, a campaign adviser said yesterday.

Who knows? Maybe he'll pick Paul Ferro.  In fact, I demand that he does!

Methinks that Baker has already picked Tisei. (0.00 / 0)
Why else would Tisei out himself if he wasn't the one to be picked?

Tisei was first elected to the House at age 22 and moved to the Senate in 1991. His sexual orientation has been an open secret on Beacon Hill, and he disclosed it publicly yesterday in an interview with the Globe, anticipating the scrutiny that would accompany a statewide candidacy. "It is not exactly a news flash,'' he said . "I don't think people really care these days.''

People don't really care these days... I'm guessing he didn't read the many posts and many many comments on RMG about Jen Nassour giving an interview to a gay newspaper.

Me too (5.00 / 1)
1) The Baker campaign would want him to officially come out first to see if it would be a problem.  Tisei has now done that.  We can see the timing of this.

2) Tisei is active in RMG.  He was never here before and has now done 8 posts since Oct. 5th.

3) Tisei is already Baker's campaign chairman.  Baker is obviously comfortable with Tisei, trusts him and so on.

4) Buzz.  The GOP gossip mill is all pointing towards Tisei.

Not really the point I was making. (5.00 / 1)
The point I was making was about the timing.  Why yesterday and not 6 months ago or 6 years ago?  Seems to me it is to vet the issue as part of Baker's consideration for LG.

This is common practice when running for higher office.  Candidates will often disclose information early.  This way they can get it out of the way and control the story themselves.  Otherwise you risk having a story controlled by your opponent or the media.

Tisei is doing this now.  The potential for higher office may be the motive.

Time for Expansion not Contraction (5.00 / 1)
I find the prospect of Baker choosing a running mate (leaving aside that the race for G and LG are separate) in November an interesting side light to the nascent campaign.  However, the comments have put on display the need to a feeder system and much stronger base than we have today.  We, as a party, need to be fielding candidates in both those districts that we believe we have a chance of wining as well of those where the chances are considered less than optimal.

Here's why I feel this way:

1) In those districts with potential we need to make a strong effort to take a seat, two, five, etc.  We need to put forth a strong effort in terms of money and boots on the ground.  When Baker wins he will need all the help he can get in the Statehouse.

2) In those districts where we do not feel we have a strong chance to win the seat we still need to field a strong candidate and good set of boots on the ground.  This will serve both as a training ground for republican campaign workers but will also force the incumbent to spend time and money ensuring that they maintain their position in the Lege.  Plus there is always the possibility that there could be an upset.

The important aspect for all candidates is a commitment to run not once but two or three times.  We need to build a set of candidates with name recognition within the communities and this often takes multiple election attempts.  We cannot afford one and done candidates.

We have some good people stepping forward.  I hope we have some more in the next few weeks and months as well as people willing to help them in their quest to restore balance to the state legislature.

There ya go, create division amongst the rank and file by taking an elected official off the table. (0.00 / 0)
It's fun watching so many of you fawn and drool over the situation. You have already annointed Baker and have exhulted him to the throne. Then you expect him to pick a mate, some of whom have been part and parcel in the destruction of the party in this state by voting against some of the core principals of our party.
It is very disturbing to see people walking down the same path of failure, time and time again, never being able to figure out why you get then same results.
But, even a blind squirrel finds a nut evry once in a while.

And what exactly is your recommendation for success (5.00 / 1)
PoliticalMadMen? How socially conservative  must a candidate be? When was the last time a social conservative was elected Governor. You might say Romney but in some fever swamps he was never "one of us." Same-sex marriage opponents never want to forgive him. He was soft on abortion. Massachusetts is a socially liberal state; that's the way it is for worse or for better. Democrats have long abandoned the mantle of fiscal responsibility. It's there for the Republicans as it has been for years. Republican success depends on drawing independents and moderates and wayward Demcorats (see Cellucci, who was more successful than a blind squirrel).

Tisei would be an awful pick... (0.00 / 0)
Senator Tisei is an awful choice. I would be really happy with Polito or Cruz--genuinely enthusiastic.

I think Cruz would be great because we wouldn't lose a seat in the legislature.

Baker needs someone more conservative than Tisei, or I legitimately think he risks losing voters to Tim Cahill.

Didn't Tisei oppose the income tax roll-back to 5%?

I know he's terrible on social issues. It's not like he's indifferent: he's legitimately pushing a socially liberal agenda that 90% of Republicans would oppose, and probably majorities of unenrolled voters as well.

Tisei lobbied other Republicans in opposition to a vote on marriage, and even now he's pushing radical legislation like that Transgender bill that guarantees men can go in the ladies bathroom. He co-sponsored it. This is who we want for our LG? He makes Timmy Murray look good.

I have been a Baker supporter because I'm still upset about Mihos's treatment of Kerry Healey. But if Baker picks Tisei, I'm going with Mihos. And assuming Baker wins the primary, I am not confident I could bring myself to cast a vote for him in the general.

90%? (0.00 / 0)
"I know he's terrible on social issues. It's not like he's indifferent: he's legitimately pushing a socially liberal agenda that 90% of Republicans would oppose, and probably majorities of unenrolled voters as well." - As a I Republican, as an active one at that, and as a human being, I really hope that's not true.  I don't believe it was true or it would be difficult to be part of this party.

Richard Tisei has been on the front line, as a loyal Republican, fighting against the Democratic majority for a long time.  He'd be a great choice.

I'll obey the 11th commandment and refrain from commenting on Baker's Republican opponent.
