Eminent Domain Land Takings in Kelo Now a Vast Wasteland

by: yankeepundit

(Wow.... just, wow. - promoted by DD4RP)

The 2005 Supreme Court decision in Kelo v. New London sparked a nationwide citizens movement not unlike the Tea Party movement of this year.  In Kelo, the court ruled that government could take private property for the benefit of private development.

The decision outraged conservatives and libertarians.

In Massachusetts the CLT started a project in defense of private property rights. Brad Jones filed legislation to prevent such takings in the Commonwealth.  The state GOP continues to fight for the maintenance of private property rights.

So what happened to the project that gave rise to Kelo?

Nothing.

Earlier this month, Pfizer announced that it was not going to build on the site.  The private development will not take place.

The homes and businesses that once stood there have been demolished.  Only memories remain.

Today the site is a wasteland.

New London (AP) - Weeds, glass, bricks, pieces of pipe and shingle splinters have replaced the knot of aging homes at the site of the nation's most notorious eminent domain project.

There are a few signs of life: Feral cats glare at visitors from a miniature jungle of Queen Anne's lace, thistle and goldenrod. Gulls swoop between the lot's towering trees and the adjacent sewage treatment plant.

But what of the promised building boom that was supposed to come wrapped and ribboned with up to 3,169 new jobs and $1.2 million a year in tax revenues? They are noticeably missing.

Proponents of the ambitious plan blame the sour economy. Opponents call it a "poetic justice."

"They are getting what they deserve. They are going to get nothing," said Susette Kelo, the lead plaintiff in the landmark property rights case. "I don't think this is what the United States Supreme Court justices had in mind when they made this decision."

Thought you may find this of interest.

Thanks For The Memories (0.00 / 0)
Another disgusting subject to set my blood pressure aboil. Thanks! :)
The take away here is for anyone who actualy thinks that they own something ... guess again.
No amount of sweat and blood enables you to own anything.
You are just renting the property from its true owners, the owners of everything, the government.
Long live the empire.

So glad you posted this (5.00 / 1)
Read this in the ProJo last week and meant to do a post about it and never got around to it.

Unbelievable... poor people steamrolled by government and crony capitalists. What a shame... its downright evil

I love the outrage. (0.00 / 0)
Obligatory comment:

This is not capitalism, it's corporatism.  Capitalism supports the free market, this is the big government force non-market.

Corpratism is capitalism as far as I can tell. (5.00 / 1)
Any corporation with the ability to exert influence over the government in an effort to gain some advantage, will do so.

So? (0.00 / 0)
The government doesn't have to do their bidding.  It is the actions of government that prevents capitalism.

What's the solution? (0.00 / 0)
A country can't be truly capitalist unless is has no government?

Constitutionally limited government (0.00 / 0)
Our economy is part capitalist and part government.  There is a sliding scale to these things ranging from complete capitalism to complete communism.

The actions here of the government forcibly taking people's property and handing them over whole cloth to another party is not a capitalist act.  It is a big government act of force.

What happened here in Kelo v New London was not capitalism.

"Victory is Mine!" - Stewart Gilligan Griffin.

When did government NOT do the bidding of corporations? (4.00 / 1)
Sure, given the embryonic state of the concept of corporations in the late 1700's, there was not active collusion back then.  (But given the mercantile roots of the American Revolution, it could be argued that the tie between the government and special interest/crony capitalism is rooted in the revolution.)

In the first half of the 1800's, government subsidized the private companies building toll roads and canals.  In latter half of the 19th Century, it was the railroads and the shaping of corporate law that had the Supreme Court give corporations some of the same rights of real people.

So your living some fantasy to want to return to the bygone days with government did not do the bidding for corporations.

Not the point (0.00 / 0)
You can say that government has always done the bidding of corporation,  but that's not a reason to support it.  Saying the government has done bad things in the past as well doesn't make their current bad acts good.

When politicians take people's property and give it over whole cloth to private interests.. VOTE THEM OUT!

When politicians run up the public debt for a massive bank and auto bailouts.. VOTE THEM OUT!

When politicians attempt to nationalize the health care industry.. VOTE THEM OUT!

I was reacting to your specific comment... (0.00 / 0)
"actions of government that prevents capitalism" and demonstrated that that was a completely false statement based on the facts of history.

As for you little rant above...the first to things did indeed happen, and I tried to vote out the Bush administration--your the one that supported them.

[ Parent ]
No I didn't (0.00 / 0)
I never voted for Bush.

"Victory is Mine!" - Stewart Gilligan Griffin.

[ Parent ]
I suppose you're right (0.00 / 0)
It is government enabled, so the blame can't be entirely(or at all) on free enterprise.

Still I am a proud capitalist, but capitalism without any soul or sense of what's right is just as wrong as communism or any other terrible thing out there. Pfizer still deserves some scorn for this.
