Why all the Republican beefing going on?

by: Vote3rdpartynow

Tue Nov 24, 2009 at 15:09:16 PM EST

( - promoted by EaBo Clipper)

I have to say I am a bit disappointed in the good folks that voice their opinions on RMG these past couple days.  They are all entitled to their opinion, but I would caution you this - folks are watching.

The Republican Party has been blessed with a great opportunity this year - we are going to have a Republican primary for the Governor's race.  It's been a while since we had one and because of that long time without one the issues important to our party have been forgotten.  The media pays no attention to us and the voters have forgotten that we are the party of fiscal responsibility and prudence.

There are two candidates for the Governor's office on the right - Christy Mihos and Charlie Baker.  Both are good men, but something less than perfect.  We will not find a perfect candidate no matter how hard we try.  That being said lets not forget that 'perfect is the enemy of good'.  Let's not trash either of the GOP candidates or their LG choices.

Starting here and starting now let's remember that the REAL enemy here is the Democrat party that has lied, cheated and stolen away our economy and our liberties.  Deval Patrick lied when he said he would lower our property taxes.  Deval Patrick lied when he said he would create 100,000 jobs.  Deval Patrick lied when he said he would make it easier for small businesses in Massachusetts.  The Democrats cheated when they forced Sen Kirk on us prematurely by falsely claiming a state emergency.  The Democrats cheated us out of our money when they promised to lower our income taxes so many years ago.  The Democrats stole our money when they offered up big pensions to criminal state hacks like Billy Bulger.

Vote3rdpartynow :: Why all the Republican beefing going on?

The Republicans are not the problem.  Not Senator Tisei, Charlie Baker or Christy Mihos.  The Republicans do want to be part of the solution.  And whoever wins the primary should be promised the unwavering support of the other candidate and his staff.  Remember, once the primary is done you can't take back the bad things that are said of the opponent.

But there is a larger problem on our horizon - Tim Cahill.  I have said it a number of times - Tim Cahill will be the reason we lose the Governor's race.  Tim Cahill is there for one reason and that is to divide the conservative fiscal voters.  It is far more important that we focus our attention on toppling him than winning points bashing either of the candidates on the right.

No doubt I have been critical of the GOP over the years, but now is not the time.  What problems we have must remain unresolved until after all these important elections.  We can not afford to lose these upcoming elections.  If ever there was a time for the GOP to make great strides this is it.  Deval Patrick and his band of merry misfits have given us the opportunity of a political lifetime.  The leaders of the Democrat Party in Massachusetts are corrupt and clueless.  Now is when we need to lead.  Now is when we need to unite.  Now is when we need to stay focused on the REAL enemies.

Choose your sides and your candidates.  Support them with your money and your time.  But realize that every time you speak ill of another Republican candidate you empower the enemy.

I have had enough of the Democrat Party and their criminal ways.  Their one-sided government has ruined the dreams of so many in this state - young and old alike.  I want to see Deval Patrick thrown out of office so badly I can taste it.  And I'll be damned if I watch Republicans split hairs over the candidates such that they lose the war for the battle.  This is our time and this is our chance to take back Massachusetts from the socialist pigs that have bankrupt this great state and turned it into a punchline for the rest of the nation.  Get over yourselves and fall in line soldiers - there is a war to be won.

We can still throw mud and talk sh!t as long as it's not directed at Mihos or Baker, right?

Yes! there is a guy named Deval Patrick and Tim Cahill (0.00 / 0)

I totally get... (0.00 / 0)
..what you're saying about Republicans needing to get together behind a candidate and not "trash" anyone. That's true.
But what's happening on RMG is far from trashing...
Are we supposed to nicely and quietly accept our current slate just because these guys decide that they are going to run as Republicans?
What if they truly are Republicans in Name Only?
We have a convention coming up where we get to nominate the candidate we feel best represents us and our chance to win the corner office. That consideration involves more than just checking to see that there is an R after their name. We need to feel good about supporting them and the policies they will advocate for once they are in. That's why we're talking about these things on RMG.
If Deval Patrick or Tim Cahill suddenly decided to slap an R after their name would we support them and only say supportive things about them?
If the current set of candidates is our only option when the convention arrives, then absolutely we should get behind a candidate and then go nuts campaigning for them.
But I'm just not ready to, as you say, "fall in line" and close the doors on anyone else who may want a chance to get into this race for the Republican ticket.
And I think the debate we are having here on Red Mass Group about the current candidates is entirely appropriate and healthy.

Wendy,Wendy, just fall in line like a good little lemming and follow the party right off the cliff ! (0.00 / 0)
Sorry, it was there, had to say it. Now I will start to be nice.

If people are RINOs then support the other candidate.... (5.00 / 1)
If you don't support either of the candidates on the right then find and recruit another.

I am not telling you how to vote.  I don't even know who I am supporting yet, but I know that finding fault in the ones I don't like only makes it easier for the Democrats to root out ways to divide the folks on the right.

Debate is good and the position on the issues should be discussed - and this is the place to do it.  But I am seeing comments such as "Tisei is the problem" and "Get ready for the Mihos negative machine".  Those aren't constructive or insightful in any way.

Believe it or not thousands of people read these posts.  Many will base a voting decision on what they read here.  If they read things like that then they might just vote for Cahill or Patrick assuming that the GOP can't get its sh*t together.  Then what have we gained?  Is 4 more years of Cadillac Deval what you want?  We all know that Cahill is running to split the independent vote - so the more they vote for him the more likely Deval stays just where he is.  We are walking headfirst into their trap and patting ourselves on the back as we do it.

No me.

Who is walking into the trap ? (0.00 / 0)
You may forget that Mihos was in the race first. Then, Baker was begged to get in.
So using that logic above, Baker should have stayed out so as not to divide the party and that independent vote, no ?
People are not trashing Tisei hinself but his political votes and stances on issues.  This is a political site and that stuff is fair when you insert yourself into the game.
I would agree that if they were trashing him personally, not good.
Also, aren't the Dems trashing each other right now in the senate race ? Of course they are. But with them, unlike us, they will come together after t support their candidate. A lot of The GOP has a history of taking their ball and staying home cause they didn;t get what they wanted. Wahhhhhh.

[ Parent ]
It doesn't matter who was in the race first... (4.00 / 1)
We also had another gentleman named Dr Dembrowski who sadly had to withdraw from the race for personal reasons.  I encourage people to join the race - the more the merrier.  I think it is great that the GOP has two solid candidates and I look forward to the debates - as all the GOP should.  But as mentioned in another comment there are people saying things like "Tisei is the problem" and "Get ready for the Mihos negative machine".  These are not a discussion of issues, but rather a wedge purposely being driven between factions of the party.

I am all for god honest debate of issues and where the candidates stand on those important issues.  But more time has been spent trashing each other than there has been trashing the sitting Governor or the turncoat Treasurer.

Why can't people on the right campaign as though either of the two candidates would be an improvement over what we have now?  Isn't that the case?

Intraparty Dem conflicts are nothing like the things I've scene among Republicans.  Hell, I still hear a "Remember Rappaport!" nearly 12 years after the campaign.  And the Ogo/What's His Name (Beatty, I knew it would come to me) flame war here was a true classic.

I know this is self serving...but liberals either admire or are appalled by the emotional framing of arguments (death panels, ect).  But when these tactics are used against each other...WOW, it's fun to watch.

Wendy is 100% right (5.00 / 1)
This is a blog. This is exactly where this sort of discussion is supposed to take place.

I don't spend a lot of time posting here, but every once in a while, something truly important happens that will shape the future of our state and our party, that we actually may have some control over. This is such an instance, and we're moving down the wrong path.

I think few have really grasped just how out-of-the-mainstream Tisei truly is. This is about his policy positions he's taken over the years, and whether they are what we want to put forward as our positions and values as Republicans.

I would ask folks to stop chastising their fellow Republicans for having this discussion, and allow them to share information and their perspectives on the pick.

It's when people feel that they're being shut down and their voices aren't heard, that they leave the party. I know too many of those people already. Let's be heard here, and have a discussion. And while we're at it, let's grow this blog by forwarding these discussions to our fellow city committee members, and hear their input, etc.

Then support Mihos. (5.00 / 2)
I don't understand why people are so confused about this.  If you don't like Tisei/Baker then support Mihos.  There are lots of reasons to support Mihos in this race.  He is a very good candidate and certainly a better one than Deval Patrick or Timmy Cahill.

If you don't like Baker or Mihos then you don't have another Republican choice.  It's one or the other.

Clearly Baker has made a choice and you don't like the choice.  But Baker isn't going to change his pick and all the complaining about the pick isn't going to win any support for the Republicans in the future.

there's no point of having a political blog if the unwritten rule is that everyone has to express the same opinion.

I didn't say you must have the same opinion....... (0.00 / 0)
In fact Jeanne, I said to 'choose a candidate and support him with your time and money' whomever that candidate might be.  But I see a lot of bashing going on here and it is primarily aimed at each other over who is the best Republican.  There are people dedicating entire posts to the shortcomings of the person they don't like - when one day that person might be the candidate for their party.

Like it or not there is no perfect candidate.  Express opinions freely, but at the end of the day everything negative that is said will come back to haunt us.

Okay... (5.00 / 1)
I agree somewhat. Sweeping negative comments ("So and so is a jerk and will destroy the party") are not helpful.  And I'm all for keeping a civil tone towards each other and our candidates.

However, this is the ideal place to hash out "who is the best Republican."  There have been comment strings comparing Baker/Tisei and Mihos on tax policy. If Senator Tisei has voted against lowering taxes, I want to know about it. That might impact my decision about whom to support.

As long as comments are based on fact, it's good to point out that one candidate is better than another on a particular issue. That's what primaries are for.

I'm not foolish enough to thing that all here think that same about any issue.  But the timing is not right to be arguing over Baker's LG pick, or other issues that ultimately are a year out.  Yes their is a convention and these issues need to be discussed in as a respectful manner possible, but not now.  Let's look at the calendar folks....there is a senate race going on, which to me is more important than a governors race in the future.  We could elect Reagan tomorrow, and he'll still be fighting a heavily one-sided legislature.

If that doesn't resonate, take a look at the other side.  BMG is inundated with stories that almost exclusively to the senate race, issues around their favored candidates and fundraiser.  Now I don't think they'll given up on the governor's race and they do have a wider field of candidates....but there is not a whole lot being said about the Governors race.

But which would re rather do, argue about Baker vs Mihos, or whose social positions fit better with whose?  Or we could focus more a little more on the senate race and view it from the prism of which has the potential to do the most in the short term for the GOP and at least slow the lunacy in DC.  A potential SINGLE vote that could break the 60 vote majority in US senate.

Imagine if you will last Saturday's health care debate in the senate and substitute Brown for Kirk.  This madness on Healthcare, Cap and Trade, and other big expensive gov't power grabs could be given some balance.  Now imagine there is a delay in the Senate's debate (which there will be) and put the final 60 vote cloture motion out into mid/late January.

As the original post points out Deval's own record is enough to sink his re-election.  The GOP could run a canned ham that didn't say anything offensive (did someone say Cahill) and could win based on the anti-deval vote and defections among his base.

There will be time discuss, debate, and argue if you want about who is better for the Governor, but not now.  we should focus on showing the difference offered by Brown vs Coakley and/or Capuano.  The clock moves quickly between now and January, and turnout will be low for a special election....so let's get busy.

Gary, who is making this the issue ? (3.00 / 1)
Guess what- Baker is.
Baker decided to make an LG pick now.
Baker decided to have his cronies approach Cahill.
Baker decided to have his cronies approach other people.
Baker had his buddies send out a letter slamming Mihos.
Baker is the one trying to keep Mihos off the ballot behind the scenes.
It is the Baker people not talking about Scott Brown, all they are focusing on is Baker.

Have you seen Mihos doing any of this ????
Yet he got slammed for NOT DOING IT at the Plymouth straw stroll.

Ironic isn't it ?? Yet Mihos is the bad guy and now you want no discussion. If not now, when ???
Can you imagine if Mihos decide not to discuss and push  the corruption issue with the big dig ?

Sounds a little like Obama slamming The Fox network.

Again (5.00 / 1)
Baker's actions now or in the recent past I'm sure have their purposes.

I never said I don't want discussion, I just question which is a more effective use of time right now at this moment.

The LG announcement literally consumed traffic on this board more any any topic I can recall since I first visited....and kept up for the better part of three days.

Meanwhile, the press and blogs went merrily on discussing the senate race.  Getting more press and exposing the public to more of their message....which is essentially very similar for all of them (more of the same)...the group discussions have been a giant chorus of "Me too....I agree", but their names and faces are out there....Brown, not so much.  Hell, I'd be shocked if most of the unenrolled even know there are other candidates beside the 4 DEMS in the race.

I don't expect alot of coverage from the MSM, but can we at least put away the distractions just for now?  I have no doubt their will be intra-party mud-slinging and operatives behind the scenes.

Honestly, I haven't a clue which way I'm leaning for a primary vote right now...but you know....lot's of time to make that decision for me.

Wrong - Tisei is the problem! (5.00 / 1)
If the marriage amendment had gone forward, that would have increased conservative turnout. You know it, I know it and yellow dog knows it.  for Republican legislative candidates in 2008, that may have helped--don't even get me started on 2006 when 3 or 4 solid candidates lost by literally a couple of hundred votes.  When Republicans go to the left, it hurts.  Don't ask me, just look at the national party in 2006.  Big spenders, down-playing social issues, sound familiar?  Having a leftist lt. gov. isn't 'splitting hairs' it's a deal-breaker and Charlie Baker's people should've known better especially after NY 23. C'mon folks, this isn't the 90's--Kerry Healey lost with that strategy!

Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.

Then support Mihos. (5.00 / 1)
You don't have to like Tisei, that's okay.  So go and support Mihos and find all kinds of positive things to say about him.  There is more than one candidate in the race and you are free to support the other one.

See your point but (0.00 / 0)
There seems to be this stigma out there that if you are not totally enamored with Charlie Baker then you are somehow anti-republican. Some of us want a REAL conservative candidate. Now, if ever there was a time, IS the time to fight for our conservative values, and to push our candidates to take up real conservative ideals, not just run as Democrats but with an R next to their name instead. Some of us don't like murdering babies, some of us like the constitution (see: bill of rights, amendment 2), some of us still believe in the sanctity of marriage; Charlie Baker does not. Christy is closer, but still flawed. However after Baker's choice of LG it is clear that he only plans on drifting farther LEFT.

I've heard all the stuff about electability in Massachusetts, and I agree that a true conservative probably wouldn't cut it, but come on people, just cause the moonbats have almost completely overrun our state doesn't mean we should throw our values out the window. Charlie Baker is just a blue dog Democrat in any state other than MA, and I for one will not be fooled into voting for him just because he decided to enroll in the Republican party. GO CHRISTY!

I am probably the most conservative voter here....... (0.00 / 0)
I am part of the Christian right and I oppose gay marriage, abortion, big government anything, higher taxes, etc, etc, etc.  Neither of the candidates are aligned with me completely.  In fact, I would say I believe in about half of where they are on the positions.  But that half is better than the nothing I agree with Deval on.  I am opposed to Deval Patrick one hundred percent.  I am opposed to Timmy Cahill one hundred percent.  Either Republican is an improvement, but bashing one or the other only weakens them in the long run.  That is my only point to the readers....

You support Christy - great.  Work hard for him.

Glad you have some sense (0.00 / 0)
In your values, but I'm confused as to how those values have led you to the argument you make here. I will not be voting for candidates that want to turn the GOP into the Democratic party, I will not be voting to set the precedent that candidates for the Republican nomination who shun conservative values will get the OK from voters.

Here's the thing, its a free country so anyone can run for any nomination they want. However just because a person like Charlie Baker, who is not conservative and barely Republican, decides to enroll in the party and run for its nomination, does not mean I'm just going to fall in line and vote for him if he wins the nomination. And if good conservatives like you and me just roll over from day 1 and say that we're gonna support him no matter what, then Baker has absolutely zero incentive to take up some real conservative values.

As conservatives we have the obligation to push candidates to take up our values. They have to know that they won't get our votes if they just ignore us, like Charlie Baker is doing with his choice of Tisei, and with pretty much everything he has said. The same is true for Christy, but I think he is the only one who will actually respond to the right and has the potential to become more conservative as the race goes on (I understand that gay marriage will be off the table in this election, but at least Christy is not running around celebrating that his brother is gay and married and picking openly gay running mates).

I want Deval out as much as the next guy, no question, but we have a whole year until election day, right now is the time to solidify ourselves as voters and say NO to these fake Republicans, and that if they don't start listening to us, we won't turn out for them come election day. Plain and simple. Go Christy!

[ Parent ]
But when there are no "pure" conservative candidates (5.00 / 1)
you have to support the next closest thing. Mihos has the same positions on social issues that Baker does. I contend that if the focus of this campaign becomes social issues, we will loose and loose big. The nation as a whole may be trending conservative and more people may identify themselves as pro-life, but I would propose that that is not the case in Massachusetts. Why are Devalue's numbers so poor? It's not because people don't like his position on gay marriage or abortion. They think he's run the state into the ground and has only offered more taxes and municipal aid cuts as the solution. Same with the Legislature, but there you also have the hack-o-rama factor too. We have to look at the larger picture of winning the general, and that will be decided on fiscal issues, conservative fiscal issues. People vote with the wallets first unless they are so ideologically locked on one particular issue, i.e. "I won't vote for this guy ever because he supports blank." This state is bleeding population because it's too damn expensive to live here, not because it's too damn liberal. Marriage is a religious issue. We all have the right to equal protection under the law. Let the churches decide if they recognize a gay marriage and be done with the whole argument, the government shouldn't even be involved. I'm pro-life, but until the law of the land is changed there is little a governor, or lt. governor can do about it. I am absolutely against federal/state dollars supporting it though.

But I contend that these are issues for another day. The fiscal mess must take priority or the only people able to afford to live here will all be Democrats anyway because they're tenured professors or on the government dole.

Why is President Obama's Justice Dept. running guns to Mexican drug cartels, and possibly MS-13 too?

There are many fiscal issues I have as well (0.00 / 0)
Like Tisei voting for Masshealth/CommonwealthCare and against tax cuts. Also I am very strongly in favor of term limits, and in my opinion Tisei is just as much a part of the Beacon HIll hack-o-rama as any Dem, hes been there for 22 years! He's never done anything but legislate, ever!

Baker wants to repeal the sales tax 5%, which is one of things I agree with him on, I just agree more with Christy who wants it at 3%. Baker and Tisei want more managed care, they have both talked about it for a long time. While it may be cheaper, it also means insurance companies (or in the case that you have Masshealth that Tisei supports, the government) will be able to choose your doctor.

And lets not even get started on the Big Dig mess. Charlie was Secretary of Administration and Finance back then, do you know what Sec. of A&F does?? Writes all the state's finances!!!! Well we all know how well the Big Dig part of his plan worked out....

And on top of all this, he doesn't have one ounce of conservative thinking on social issues, talk about a way over-rated candidate. Everyone Republican is selling themselves short on Charlie Baker, he's not Republican!!!!

I get it, we all want Deval out, but it sounds like everyone is only concerned with getting someone with an R next to their name in, no matter who it is. I am not a party loyalist, I am loyal to my beliefs only, and it is because of this that I cannot support this fool.

[ Parent ]
So who do you support? (0.00 / 0)
Mihos? He's the only other choice. Is he any more of a "real" Republican? If you overlay their stances on social issues they're virtually indistinguishable. What makes a person a "real" Republican? Should we adopt the national party purity test?

I want real reform and a less oppressive tax policy. I'd like to see fewer abortions and zero public funding of them. Because of the Equal Protection clause in the Constitution gays are entitled to the same rights under the law as the rest of us. We all enter a civil union when we get married anyway. "Marriage" is a religious act. Leave it to the churches and be done with it.

But mostly I want my children to be able to find a good job, affordable house and raise their families here in Massachusetts. I don't want to have to go to the Carolinas or Tennessee to visit my grandchildren. I think Charlie Baker offers the best chance to make some headway in that direction.

Hopefully, with a good slate of candidates for the Legislature, we can add some much needed balance on Beacon Hill too. Because without that support whichever man is elected governor has no shot of implementing the kind of restructuring and downsizing we need. And THAT is the most pressing issue facing the Commonwealth.

Why is President Obama's Justice Dept. running guns to Mexican drug cartels, and possibly MS-13 too?

...would you be willing to consider changing your tag? Because I'm thinking that "Vote3rdpartynow" doesn't exactly sound supportive of the Republican cause and if people are watching, as you say, someone could think you are backing Tim Cahill.

But if people see someone with the name (0.00 / 0)
Vote3rdpartynow in full support of a republican candidate they might think the independent vote is going to the right.  It could actually help the cause....

From Republican strategists at the Republican Governors Assoc. (5.00 / 1)
Republican strategists suggested their gubernatorial candidates were able this year to carry two states won by Barack Obama not so much by moving to the center, as by banishing disputes on social issues from the conversation. That approach, they said, allowed them to assemble the type of broad, center-right coalitions that have recently eluded congressional Republicans but offer the only formula for the party to prevail in New England.

Why is President Obama's Justice Dept. running guns to Mexican drug cartels, and possibly MS-13 too?
