Republican Turnout on Dec 8

by: yankeepundit

Wed Dec 09, 2009 at 07:42:59 AM EST

What do you think of the turnout in yesterday's election?  Here are some baseline numbers:

2009 GOP Primary Turnout: 162,706

2006 GOP State Primary Turnout: 85,770

2002 GOP State Primary Turnout: 254,157

In my view, Brown had it in the bag so I considered yesterday closer to the largely uncontested 2006 election (well there was Chase v. Scott) rather than the hotly contested 2002 primary (Healey v. Rappaport).

Given the cold weather and the attention lavished on the Dems, it looks to me like the GOP base is pretty fired up.  The 163,000 GOP primary voters is pretty impressive to me.

Scott needs to drive a wedge between Coakley and the women voters. He needs to increase his name recognition state wide with one issue.

I think Brown needs to drive a wedge between.......... (0.00 / 0)
Coakley supporters and the voters that supported Khazei and Pagliuca.  Those people voted for change.  Capuano and Coakley voters voted for status quo.

Nice job with the numbers (0.00 / 0)
I was going to look them up and now I don't have to.

In 2002 we had the LG primary with Healey and Rappaport so that drove turnout.  In 2006 the focus was on teh Dem Primary.  Because unenrolled can vote in either, the focus was there.

For a special 162,706 is a very good number for a special, especially with most of the focus on the other side.  The Scott Brown campaign was using the primary to do a dry fun for the general with their GOTV efforts.  There were a lot of people making calls yesterday.

Bob Hedlund for Minority Leader.

Torn... (0.00 / 0)
Can't figure out if its a good turnout or not. I'm inclined to say it wasn't. I must say anecdotally though that Brown is making a lot of progress as I'm seeing signs, bumper stickers, and getting positive feedback from people outside the political junkie bubble and Republican circles (friends and family outside the process).

2006 was such a lousy year, with lousy candidates, that NOBODY voted in the primary... including myself I think!

I'd have to see what the Dem turnout was in 2002 when they also had a contested primary to figure out if this was a relatively good turnout. Try to look this up later if I can.

Check out these vote totals for Scott Brown (0.00 / 0)
Attleboro 1,525
Barnstable 2,433
Chelmsford 1,638
Needham 2,038

Springfield 836
Fall River 457
Somerville 454
Cambridge 426

Special election are all about turnout.

My Two Cents .. (0.00 / 0)
Brown basicaly was running against himself. The jackpot vote pool is always the unenrolled and if you were one of them why would you have grabbed a GOP card yesterday when you could just as easily cast a vote into that dem wolf pack?
The only surprise I got yesterday was how easily Martha cruised to the victory lap. Tells me people over there are entirly disengaged IMO. The toughest part here is its 4 weeks with a couple of holidays in the middle. Time to get those signs out there is now.
