David Pottier to Challenge Marc Pacheco

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Sun Dec 13, 2009 at 09:26:55 AM EST

According to the Taunton Gazette David Portier will run for the State Senate in the FIRST PLYMOUTH AND BRISTOL district.  Current Senator Marc Pacheco is a 9 term incumbent with $233,321.33 cash on hand according to his 2008 year end report with the OCPF.  As a Democrat incumbent he would be tough to beat.  However, according to the Newton Tab and Daily News Tribune Pacheco may be running for the open Auditor position vacated by Joe Denucci.

David Pottier is a 3rd term city councilor from Taunton and currently serves as City Council President.  Taunton is both the largest and most heavily Democratic municipality in the district.  Pottier is elected city-wide and finished 3rd out of 16 in the recent 2009 Taunton city elections.  On paper, Pottier has a fantastic profile of an electable candidate similar to Malden City Council President Craig Spadafora who announced his intention to run for Tisei's seat just a few days ago.

The First Plymouth and Bristol district is one of the most Republican in the entire state where McCain captured roughly 46% of the vote.  This roughly mirrors his national average and is much better than his 36% result state wide.  If the seat is open, it should be one of the top Republican targets in the state.

MORE BELOW THE FOLD....

Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie :: David Pottier to Challenge Marc Pacheco
Obama vs McCain 2008 Results:
FIRST PLYMOUTH AND BRISTOL
Bridgewater 5,873 to 5,849
Carver 2,933 to 2,899
Marion 1,797 to 1,262
Middleborough 5,150 to 5,853
Wareham 6,190 to 4,392

Taunton 13,135 to 8,634
Berkley 1,574 to 1,548
Dighton 1,732 to 1,719
Raynham 3,336 to 3,522

TOTAL 41,720 to 35,678
TOTAL 53.9% to 46.1%

The Percentages here are only among the Obama and McCain votes and do not include the 3rd party candidates.

Pottier and Spadafora are both City Council Presidents.  This usually means they were elected by the other members of the city council.  For a Republican to earn such an honor they would likely be well respected, well liked, and have the support of Democrats.  When Marlborough City Council President ran for State Representative in 2008 he received endorsements from a number of prominent Democrats in the city including Mayor Nancy Stevens.  It will be interesting to watch for any cross over endorsements in these two races as well.

Excellent! (5.00 / 1)
I've known 3rd term Taunton City Councilor David Pottier for awhile now and I just saw him the other day at a political event.  I'm absolutely thrilled that the newspaper is taking an active interest in his campaign efforts and possible candidacy!

Pacheco enjoys strong union support for the scam legislation that bears (5.00 / 1)
his name. The anti-privatization Pacheco bill. However that union support wasn't enough when pitted against another union guy Stevie Lynch in the 2001 special Congressional election. Even the Massachusetts Taxpayer Foundations believes that the law should be changed so that the Commonwealth can realize some cost savings.

Look for gaming legislation to be an issue in that race.

Good luck to Pottier.

Could be an Open Seat (0.00 / 0)

Weren't there rumors that Pacheco was going to run for auditor or treasurer?  Mr. Pottier is wise to get in now and he looks like a superb candidate.

Auditor (0.00 / 0)
However, according to the Newton Tab and Daily News Tribune Pacheco may be running for the open Auditor position vacated by Joe Denucci.

Bob Hedlund for Minority Leader.

Its Just 2009 (5.00 / 1)
And as far as I know, we have challengers set up to run against six of the Incumbent Democrats.
CPA Jamison Tomasek (R-Andover) against Sen. Tucker
David Carnevale (R-Medford) against Sen. Jehlen
Selectman Eric Dalhberg (R-Chelmsford) against Sen. Fargo
RTC Chairman Edward McGrath (R-Framingham) against Sen. Spilka
City Councilor David Pottier (R-Taunton) against Sen. Pacheco
Brad Williams (R-West Roxbury) against Sen. Walsh

Last year, on ELECTION DAY, we had  Just THREE challengers to Incumbent Senators: Jon Rockwood against Timilty, Keith McCormic against Rosenberg, and Sandy Martinez against Fargo.

We also fielded another three candidates for the FIVE open Seats: John Lebeaux against now Sen. Moore to replace Sen. Augustus, Steven Levy against now Sen. Eldridge to replace Sen. Resor, and Brion Cangiamila against now Sen. Donnelly to replace Sen. Marzilli. This of course left State Rep. Thomas Kennedy and State Rep. Jennifer Flanagan unopposed as they picked up Open Seats.

(R)- Outside 495

Sandi Martinez of Chelmsford is Running Against Fargo (0.00 / 0)

Sandi Martinez and Eric Dahlberg have declared in the 3rd Middlesex.

2010 shaping up nicely (5.00 / 1)
I think that Republicans are motivated by the state of affairs in Massachusetts and the nation.  They can also see 2010 shaping up as a winnable year.  Good candidates that passed in 2008 are running now because they know they have a good chance to win.  To do so they need our help.  Invest your time and money in these local races.

Bob Hedlund for Minority Leader.

Rep Races (0.00 / 0)
This movement in the Senate has also opened up some Rep races. Katherine Clark is looking to take Tisei's seat. I've heard there are 2 qualified Republican candidates looking at her Rep. seat in Wakefield/Melrose. This is going to be an interesting year all around.

Why is President Obama's Justice Dept. running guns to Mexican drug cartels, and possibly MS-13 too?
