Richard Ross eyes Scott Brown's Seat.

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Wed Dec 30, 2009 at 09:23:53 AM EST

(This is from 12/30/09.  The people will have another vacancy to fill when Scott Brown leaves the State Senate.  Consider it our "open thread" for this discussion. - promoted by Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie)

According to The Sun Chronicle Republican State Representative Richard Ross fo Wrentham may run for Scott Brown's State Senate seat if it becomes open.  Scott Brown would vacate his seat if he his elected to the United States Senate in the January 19th special election.  There would also be an open seat if Scott Brown loses and seeks another office.

The Norfolk, Bristol & Middlesex State Senate district includes "Franklin, precincts 2 to 4, inclusive, Millis, Needham, Norfolk, Plainville, Wellesley, precincts B, F and G, and Wrentham, in the county of Norfolk; Attleboro, wards 1 and 2, ward 3, precinct A, and North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol; and Natick, precincts 6, 7, 9 and 10, Sherborn and Wayland, in the county of Middlesex."  In 2008, Scott Brown defeated Democrat challenger Sara Orozco by a 59% to 41% margin.

Richard Ross is in his 3rd term representing the 9th Norfolk formerly held by Scott Brown.  If he were to run for the Senate he would bring in the towns of Millis, Plainville, Norfolk and Wrentham for a total of 10 precincts out of 51.  His 2008 year end report with OCPF shows $5,234.17 cash on hand and no outstanding liabilities.  In 2008, Richard Ross defeated unenrolled challenger Thomas Roache by a 61% to 39% margin.

The Senate district is also home to Republican State Representative Elizabeth "Betty" Poirier.  Betty Poirier is in her 6th term representing the 14th Bristol district.  If she were to run for the Senate she would bring in the towns of Attleboro and North Attleboro for a total of 14 precincts out of 51.  Her 2008 year end report with OCPF shows $9,767.17 cash on hand and $5,000 in liabilities in the form of a candidate loan.  In 2008, Betty Poirier had no opponent.

Any excuse for a poll...

Great to see a Farm Team (0.00 / 0)
This area is a model for creating a farm team.  I can only hope there is a local official ready to step up for a state Rep run should a vacancy arise.

Scott Brown should run for a return to Scott Brown's seat.

Betty all the way (0.00 / 0)
Richard Ross is rather disappointing.

Plus, when redistricting comes around, this would allow for Timilty's and Brown's seats to be returned to normal shapes and sizes. These seats were twisted around to keep Jacques and Sprague both in office despite only living a few towns over.

"disappointing" (5.00 / 1)
Why do you think he's been disappointing?  I think he has been an very responsive Rep you is well liked in his district.

I just got from the local RTC (5.00 / 1)
If Betty is pondering a run she is playing it very close to the vest.

First, she and Ross are friends, and she is running opposed when she seeks re-election...so I'm not sure there is all that much interest.

I don't think she'll face a serious challenger...it is some young unemployed guy who thinks he can be president in 5-10 years (oh wait that's been done).

I never did ask her directly, but I have always gotten the impression she really loves her district and knows it well.  But I will definitely keep my ears open and see if I can get an answer from her directly.

BTW - I'm going as a delegate to the convention

Update on Poirier (0.00 / 0)
I know this thread has rolled off the front page, but Betty Poirer is quoted in the Boston Globe on Friday.

Among Republican candidates, Poirier said she would announce her intentions Monday.

"I'm going to take the weekend to discuss it with my family,'' Poirier said yesterday. "I'm going to discuss it with some people that are in an advisory capacity.''

This could get interesting.

So as the annoucer says "Tune in tomorrow...same bat time same bat channel"

Yes, Betty is by far the better candidate (5.00 / 3)
And I do believe there are a few Republicans on the North Attleboro Board of Selectman, and a conservative-leaning independent who has supported Scott throughout the years. There would be someone good to run for Betty's seat.

Run Betty Run!

There are GOP members of (0.00 / 0)
The NA town selectman.  Chris Sweet is a registered (R) and I think Paul Belham is as well (not sure)...but the RTC has expressed interest is seeing him re-elected, so I suspect he is.  I honestly don't know the status of John Rhino.  The selectmen are non-partisan elections, so other than the initial interviews on local cable, not much mention is made of party affiliation after that (and even at that, the interviewer may not ask)

Both would be exceptional (5.00 / 1)
Either one of these two Reps would be a worthy replacement in that Senate district.  With so few members of the legislature I am sure that that the two of them will work it out.  It would be a shame to have them both run.

Darn (0.00 / 0)
I was going to the N Attleboro RTC (first time) tonight and see how the idea of Poirer running would be received.

Why "Darn" (0.00 / 0)
Are you now not going to see how the idea will be received?

Marc

[ Parent ]
No (0.00 / 0)
because someone beat me to the idea!  I like to think I'm original...even though I know I am oft

en 4 or 5 steps behind:)

I just got a call....I'm going.  They are actively looking for delegates.  N Attleboro leans right and many of my neighbors often vote GOP, but everyone likes to call themselves "independent"....I didn't know we had an RTC until the Wrentham phonebank...I hadn't been able to find them.  Someone passed the info along, and they just showed up on the event calendar recently.
