Paul Avella for State Representative

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Thu Dec 31, 2009 at 08:39:57 AM EST

Paul Avella is running for State Representative in the 2nd Middlesex district in a rematch with freshman Representative James Arciero.  According to their 2008 year end reports with OCPF Arciero had $729.37 and Paul Avella had $356.40 cash on hand following their election a year ago.  Paul Avella announced his 2010 candidacy early and both of these numbers should change when their 2009 year end reports are filed.

Paul Avella is arguably the most overqualified candidate to run for State Representative here in Massachusetts.  He is a retired Colonel in the United States Air Force and currently serves on the Littleton School Committee.  More information can be found on his campaign website AvellaForStateRep.com or his facebook page.

The 2nd Middlesex district very good district for a Republican.  In 2006, Kerry Healey and Deval Patrick were virtually tied.  It consists of the towns of Westford, Littleton and precincts 3,5 and 7 in Chelmsford.  In 2008, Paul Avella fell short losing by a 53% to 47% margin.  Excluding Arciero's home town of Westford, Avella won 54% of the district.  This is just one of the expected rematches from 2008.  I also profiled Kevin Kuros who is in a rematch with Paul Kujawski in the 8th Worcester district a few day ago.

MORE BELOW THE FOLD....

Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie :: Paul Avella for State Representative
Obama vs McCain 2008 Results:
2nd Middlesex
Westford: 6,774 to 5,492
Littleton: 2,963 to 2,106
Chelmsford: 10,322 to 8,704, 3/9: 3,444 to 2,901

TOTAL: 13,181 to 10,499 (est.)
TOTAL: 55.7% to 44.3% (est.)

Healey + Mihos vs Patrick + Ross 2006 Results:

2nd Middlesex
Westford: 4,415 + 566 vs 4,100 + 174
Littleton: 1,585 + 269 vs 1,929 + 68
Chelmsford: 6,716 + 1,094 vs 6,553 + 274, 3/9: 2,239 + 365 vs 2,184 + 91

TOTAL: 8,239 + 1,200 vs 8,213 + 333 (est.)
TOTAL: 45.8% + 6.7% vs 45.8% + 1.8% (est.)

The Percentages here are only among the Obama and McCain votes and do not include the 3rd party candidates.  Chelmsford numbers are estimated because I do not have precinct level data.

In 2008, McCain lost by 26% statewide, but only 11.4% in the Second Middlesex district.  In 2006, Kerry Healey lost by 21% statewide, but was virtually tied in the district.  If the Mihos and Ross numbers are included, "conservative" leaning candidates lost to "liberal" candidates 16% statewide, but won by 4.9% in the district.

I have recently started profiling some Republican candidates running for State Representative and State Senate here in Massachusetts.
