BREAKING: Brown Takes Lead 48-47

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Sat Jan 09, 2010 at 19:36:03 PM EST

Democratic polling firm Public Policy Polling is out with their poll of the Massachusetts Senate Special Election and Scott Brown leads Martha Coakley 48-47.

Buoyed by a huge advantage with independents and relative disinterest from Democratic voters in the state, Republican Scott Brown leads Martha Coakley 48-47.

Here are the major factors leading to this surprising state of affairs:

-As was the case in the Gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia last year, it looks like the electorate in Massachusetts will be considerably more conservative than the one that showed up in 2008. Obama took the state by 26 points then, but those planning to vote next week only report having voted for him by 16.

*Republicans are considerably more enthusiastic about turning out to vote than Democrats are. 66% of GOP voters say they are 'very excited' about casting their votes, while only 48% of Democrats express that sentiment and that's among the Democrats who are planning to vote in contrast to the many who are apparently not planning to do so at this point.

We are going to win and shock the machine. Let's keep up the work. Make those phone calls and DONATE DONATE DONATE.

Nice, but don't do your "happy dance" just yet.... (5.00 / 2)
we have to translate those rising numbers to votes at the polls on January 19th.  Please encourage folks to vote absentee.  Deadline for absentee voting is next Friday. Remember, Monday Jan 18th is MLK Holiday. Then, volunteer to provide rides to the polls for those that will not drive in the winter...finally - PRAY FOR SUN ON January 19th.

How about snow? Don't we want a low turnout?

I'm beginning to wonder about that (5.00 / 1)
A week ago, I'd have agreed but the Dems have awakened, and the Unenrolled are breaking for Scott 76 - 16.  I'm starting to think better trunout may be our friend.

A foot of snow on election day! (0.00 / 0)
That way you have to really want to vote to get to the polls. People that really want to vote are either inspired or pissed or both. Those are not Martha voters.

Bring on the snow!

Poll Internals (0.00 / 0)

Took a quick look at the McCain/Obama 2008 breakdown and the liberal/conservative/moderate breakdown. I didn't see anything strange in the weighting.  I think that this is a pretty good sample from a technical standpoint.  Looking good for Scott!

And over on BMG... (0.00 / 0)
There is a whole lot of whining going on. How dare someone actually run against a Democrat and actually have a shot at winning. There also appears to be some anger rising to the surface that in my view points directly to the Governor.

"Never, never, never give up" - Winston Churchill

They shouldn't think the Gov has much to do with it (0.00 / 0)
They choose a mediocre candidate....and not very likable one at that.  The DEM machine made their pick for their own reasons. Whether is was unions, or pro-choice vote, or the "I think it's time we elect a female senator vote"...who knows, but she won their primary.

This vote is about one thing right now.  Stopping this healthcare monstrosity.  Not because it would damage the president's agenda, but because it a crummy piece of legislation.  And will not do a damn thing to help this state.  And the job of the Senator is to represent this state, not further the national agenda.

It's not time for the Happy Dance yet.  Lots more has to happen for Brown to win.

I'll bet the guy who is most ticked about this is Mike Capuano.

Tradition Dems for Brown (0.00 / 0)
I just got back from a going away party for a friend and I will say that it was encouraging.  Most of the people 20 or so are Democrats, traditional JFK Democrats.  None of them are voting for Coakley.  If this all plays out and not just some blip in this bluest of blue states, Brown is going to make history.

Another story from the grass roots (0.00 / 0)
My father-in-law is a lifelong Democrat.  He's having some surgery next week and may or may not be back on his feat on the 19th.  He went to town hall on Friday and pulled an absentee ballot for Scott Brown, with zero prodding from me his right wing son-in-law. I'd not even spoken with him about the race until today.

On his way home from town hall he stopped at the VFW to have a beer.  His friends (knowing his affiliation) asked him who he voted for.  When he told them he had voted for Scott, a roar went up.  Not a single person in that room was voting for Coakley.

Someone needs to micro-target vets.  They are, almost to a person, behind Scott.

Wow (0.00 / 0)
And to think Coakley was mocking the Rasmussen poll showing Brown "close" at 9 points. Wonder what she thinks of PPP.

Everyone's a liberal until they get their first paycheck.

Sorry to ruin the good mood. (0.00 / 0)
The PPP poll had Hoffman winning by 17 in NY23.
http://www.realclearpolitics.c...

They polled at a bad time, but still.

And BMG reports that the Globe poll has Coakley up by 16 and that the Herald has her up by 6.

Sorry to rain on the Patrick "Negative on everything GOP" parade... (4.00 / 3)
...but your own link to BMG points out that the Globe has the race as TIED 47%-47% amongst "very interested" voters (i.e. "likely voters") and the Herald has the race Coakley by 1% amongst the same Group.

That means EVERY poll has had the race at between -9 and +1 for Scott this week. (Ras, PPP, Herald and Globe).

Joe Kennedy, BTW, isn't even a blip.  I wonder which will be more.  The number of voter signatures JK got to get onto the ballot, or the number of votes he actually gets.

Before Scozafava dropped out (5.00 / 1)
Dede dropped out after all the polling was done.  It greatly changed the dynamic of the race.

but, PPP is not as agood a firm as Rasmussen.
