Martha wrongly says there are no more terrorists in Afghanistan

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

The Brown campaign has issued the following fact checks on the debate.

MODERATOR: "Do you think we should withdraw? [from Afghanistan]"

COAKLEY: "I think we should plan an exit strategy yes."

MODERATOR: "And how would we succeed."

MODERATOR: "I am not sure there is a way to succeed.  If the goal was and the vision in Afghanistan was to go in because we believe the Taliban was giving harbor to terrorists, we supported them, I supported that goal. They are gone, They are not there anymore, they are in Yemen and Pakistan.  Lets focus our efforts on where Al Qaeda is." (Massachusetts Senate Debate, 1/11/10)

President Obama Says That Afghanistan Is A Huge Threat, And Worth Fighting:
Obama: "I Want To Speak To You Tonight About Our Effort In Afghanistan ... And The Strategy That My Administration Will Pursue To Bring This War To A Successful Conclusion ... We Must Come Together To End This War Successfully. For What's At Stake Is Not Simply A Test Of NATO's Credibility - What's At Stake Is The Security Of Our Allies, And The Common Security Of Their World." (President Barack Obama, Remarks By The President In Address To The Nation On The Way Forward In Afghanistan And Pakistan, West Point, NY, 12/1/09)

Obama: "If I Did Not Think That The Security Of The United States And The Safety Of The American People Were At Stake In Afghanistan, I Would Gladly Order Every Single One Of Our Troops Home Tomorrow." (President Barack Obama, Remarks By The President To The Nation On The Way Forward In Afghanistan And Pakistan, Eisenhower Hall Theatre United States Military Academy At West Point West Point, New York, 12/1/09)

Obama: "I Make This Decision Because I Am Convinced That Our Security Is At Stake In Afghanistan And Pakistan. This Is The Epicenter Of Violent Extremism Practiced By Al Qaeda. . . . This Is No Idle Danger; No Hypothetical Threat." (President Barack Obama, Remarks By The President To The Nation On The Way Forward In Afghanistan And Pakistan, Eisenhower Hall Theatre United States Military Academy At West Point West Point, New York, 12/1/09)

How is that a fact check? (0.00 / 0)
All it is are words from Obama.

Just a quick google search turns up this. (0.00 / 0)
Petraeus: Al Qaeda No Longer Operating in Afghanistan
http://www.foxnews.com/politic...

The head of U.S. Central Command said Sunday that Al Qaeda is no longer operating in Afghanistan, with its senior leadership having moved to the western region of Pakistan.

Gen. David Petraeus said affiliated groups have "enclaves and sanctuaries" in Afghanistan and that "tentacles of Al Qaeda" have touched countries throughout the Middle East and northern Africa. But he said the terrorist group has suffered" very significant losses" in recent months, and agreed with Afghan President Hamid Karzai's recent assessment that there is no Al Qaeda based in his country.

It may not be their home (5.00 / 1)
Base of operation or even an base, but AQ is in and out, back and forth over the border.  We look at maps as if their is if there are clear boundaries between countries and there are not.

Nothing to stop now from running operations...using sympathizers to shelter them, and then ducking back into the hills in Pakistan (where we can have little overt action).  That's why so many drone attacks....faster...more deadly...and fewer losses on NATO forces.

For Afganistan to turn around several things have to happen
1) There has to be a better way for people to earn a living than growing poppies for herion (keeps Taliban in business)
2) The government has be legitimate....right now Mexico looks like the house of commons compared to their government...corrupt...untrustworthy....and unreliable
3) The tribal culture has to form a consensus and support that government
4) They need infrastructure than is not destroyed by religious zealots...this is a country that has been at war for decades....afganistan was at war back when Carter was on his way out.  The taliban....as brutal as they were offered some measure of stabality, and in Islam "A thousand years of oppression is better than one day of chaos"
5) Pakistan must combat AQ and Taliban from their side and root out those forces within their own government/miltary that protect it...if they can't or won't, the UN should take over.

No terrorists WHERE? (0.00 / 0)
So, Martha, I guess that Obama must have been wrong about his decision to send more troops to Afghanistan.

You probably know more than he does, after all, he only has a daily national security briefing and had dozens and dozens of conferences with generals and admirals and commanders and got up-to-the-second intelligence at the highest possible level of security clearance to make his decisions...

...and you had your sister who lived in England who you talked to on the phone...

Seriously, I almost gagged when she said there were no more terrorists in Afghanistan and that we can't win the war there so we should just leave.

Even when the moderator pressed her on how we could win, I think she said something equivalent to 'let's just show them some love and they'll love us back' - because its works so well for us in the past.
