Coakley Staffer Pushes Weekly Standard Reporter

by: Garrett Quinn

Tue Jan 12, 2010 at 21:03:15 PM EST

(Update: Coakley staffer involved is Michael Meehan. NOW WITH PICTURES! - promoted by Garrett Quinn)

To be fair Rob posted that this was coming earlier and then we watched the video before posting. The video sucks and it reportedly shows a Coakley staffer shoving Weekly Standard reporter John McCormack to the ground. You may recall that McCormack had a dust up with Dede Scozzafava during the special election in New York's 23rd congressional district.

Eric Wilson of Engage DC shot the video and he says that pictures are coming so until then watch the video and decide for yourself.

We both didn't see anybody being shoved to the ground but toward the end of the video you see and hear somebody helping a guy get off the ground. If you look closely you can see former attorney general Tom Reilly. No sign of Marie St. Fleur.

Ok we now have better video of what appears to be a Coakley staffer pushing McCormack and accosting him. This is the second video to come out of this incident and it is much, much better than the first one. You can actually see everything.

McCormack relays his account of the dust up here.

Not just anyone helped him back to his feet. (0.00 / 0)
From a tweet:

you can see her staffer helping him up and the sidewalk fence knocked over - AP had photos and will have them up

There better be a picture of a black eye or I'm not buying it.

Not sure (0.00 / 0)
But I think the man should file assault charges so the Attorney General can...oh wait...nevermind.

After seeing the 2nd video. (0.00 / 0)
Still seems like the guy fell.  Is he claiming that the act of being helped up by the Coakley staffer is assault?  Weekly Standard guys are such weenies.

You mean the part (0.00 / 0)
Where he tries to block him from going forward and asking for his credentials or the part where he accosts him? Or both?

Just curious.

The part where he tripped over the steel barricade. (0.00 / 0)
It's good to keep your eyes focused on where you are walking rather than on where someone else is walking.

[ Parent ]
Right (5.00 / 1)
So the
"Who are you"
"Show me your credentials"
Ok he shows em and I am gonna keep blocking you anyway part doesn't mean anything to ya?

"The prediction here is that RMG will peter out in a couple of months." - Adam Reilly, 2/28/2007

[ Parent ]
Not really. (0.00 / 0)
After he almost took someone out by tripping over a steel barricade, I would hope that someone would intervene to keep him away from other people.  For his safety and theirs.  Guy can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

[ Parent ]
You're oblivious, dishonest or both (0.00 / 0)
Whether the Weekly Standard reporter was pushed into barricade or tripped into it is unclear from the video. What is clear is that Coakley thug allegedly helping reporter to his feet was keeping reporter from getting anywhere near Coakley.

Coakley runs ad implying Brown is a Nazi, then looks other way while one of her goons engages in Nazi tactics. Real class act.

He asked for credentials! (0.00 / 0)
Good thing he didn't say he was a wallet inspector.

[ Parent ]
Credentials for what? (4.00 / 3)
To ask question of elected official running for office? I wasn't aware of anyone - anyone - needing "credentials" to do this. Please cite applicable law specifying where this is required, seeing how you're such a big fan of attorney general.

Jack Coleman

[ Parent ]
You are dumb. (0.00 / 0)
So are the people that rated you.  A person can ask you for anything they want.  What says they can't?  I'm done talking with you until you show credentials.

Have a nice night.

[ Parent ]
..... (0.00 / 0)
and what right does this thug have to infringe on this private citizen's right to walk down a sidewalk?  It's not the quesiton that bothers me so much as his thug attitude of "you aren't getting by me" that is....telling.

Pat, seriously, your blinders are on... (0.00 / 0)
...I know you despise the Weekly Standard (that Den of Dastardly Neo-Cons!), but really?  I mean, REALLY??

Let's say, for the sake of argument that the fellow tripped.  Fine.

Why would he be blocked repeatly from leaving by a person, who wasn't asking him if he was "ok" but asked if he was from the press, and if he has credentials!  On a Public Sidewalk!

You need Credentials now to ask an elected official a question on the street?  I think not!

This person accosted that fellow, interfered with him, and if he wasn't with the Coakley Campaign, why would he ask for his press credentials!

Just take the blinders off for a second.  This wasn't OK, even if it was "the pansies at the Weekly Standard".

"(He) is a Meathead"

[ Parent ]
Maybe he was blocked because he was being a nuisance? (0.00 / 0)
You don't need credentials to ask a question.  You also don't need anything to ask to see credentials.  Or claim that you are a wallet inspector.

[ Parent ]
We get it (5.00 / 1)
You hate the Weekly Standard.

for some political a-hole to block my freedom of movement on a public sidewalk.

You know what also blocks freedom of movement. (0.00 / 0)
Steel barricades like the one the Weekly Standard guy tripped over.

[ Parent ]
Seeing how you dodged my inconvenient question above ... (0.00 / 0)
... I'll ask it here, Patrick - what is the basis for alleged good Samaritan asking Weekly Standard for his "credentials"? And what is the difference between asking for that and asking for "his papers?"

Jack Coleman

My dodge is a thing I like to call "work." (0.00 / 0)
Work interrupts my blogging from about 7 to 7 including my commute.  And today I also got some phone banking in.

[ Parent ]
Tough to see (0.00 / 0)
But it looks like the staffer gives him a little elbow under the rim...you know like the ones that don't happen in basketball when the ref is looking....not saying he knew there was a barricade there, or intended to knock him over, but the guy didn't take a swan dive for the benefit of the camera (unless he's an accomplished stunt man)

If I were the coach, I'd toss the red flag on this one (sorry to mix sports)

Curious to see if any MSM (beside Fox) will air it and how they will frame it when they do.  I'm confident Fox will frame is as a "vicious blatant assault" (which it may be).  But will any other outlet carry it?

Looks like the guy took a digger. (5.00 / 1)
Hey, nothing to be ashamed of.  The spinning of the Earth throws off even the steadiest of us.

At first (0.00 / 0)
At first I thought he took a digger - but the second video CLEARLY shows that guy giving him an elbow - and then staying in the guy's face after he get's up.  Total disrespect - and shows how Martha wants to push the voters around too.

[ Parent ]
Ya know (0.00 / 0)
I watched that video a handful of times and I didn't see it.

But watching it one more time, there it was.....that guy actually shoves him into the barricade.

This was no digger, this was not "he tripped over the curb" "he ran into the barricade".....the guy blatantly pushes him.

A picture worth a thousand votes? (0.00 / 0)
Do I hear two thousand?

All this back and forth about whether the dude was shoved or pushed misses the point. The most compelling optic is that Martha Coakley could care less about this guys welfare. This is the woman that says she'll be looking out for us as our next US Senator. Give me a break. She's as cold as the weather outside.

Not only that Paul (0.00 / 0)
But after seeing the pic ..... I could clearly tell that Martha ordered Michael Meehan to push John McCormack to the ground!

Here is McCormack's personal account of incident: (0.00 / 0)
As reported by American Spectator:

After Coakley finished her answer, she began walking away from the restaurant, and I walked behind her asking why health care industry lobbyists were supporting her at the fundraiser. She didn't reply.

As I walked down the street, a man who appeared to be associated with the Coakley campaign pushed me into a freestanding metal railing. I ended up on the sidewalk. I was fine. He helped me up from the ground, but kept pushing up against me, blocking my path toward Coakley down the street.

He asked if I was with the media, and I told him I work for THE WEEKLY STANDARD. When I asked him who he worked for he replied, "I work for me." He demanded to see my credentials, and even though it was a public street, I showed them to him.

I eventually got around him and met up with the attorney general halfway down the block.

"Attorney General, could I ask you a question please?" I said. "We're done, thanks," Coakley replied. She walked back toward the restaurant, apparently searching for her car. She remained silent as I (politely) repeated my question.

Coakley staffers told me they didn't know who the man was who pushed me, though by every indication he was somehow connected to the campaign.

I'm not buying this (0.00 / 0)
I just see this as a reporter looking to be part of the story here rather than be a reporter. He created problems in the NY-23 race in November too. Seems a little desperate to get his name and the altercation "out there". Every leech wants to be part of this Scott Brown uprising now.

Not getting what? (0.00 / 0)
....that the Martha thug actually shoved him into a metal barricade?  That the thug actually wouldn't let him, a reporter, walk down the sidewalk?

Yes, he asked a question she didn't want to answer.
Yes, he then walked after her asking other questions she didn't want to answer.

That in no way justifies assault or impeding his freedom of movement.....and I'd press charges to the full extent of the law.  A+B is probably about it.

"I acknowledge having racist and classist and sexist feelings of white male superiority." -John Howard

[ Parent ]
are you kidding me? (0.00 / 0)
Are you this over the top partisan that when the guy clearly clips the metal barrier with his hip and falls that he must have been pushed. McCormick is all over talk radio and TV today. People who are familiar with this guy know he is a shameless self-promoter. I don't like Coakley, hate these union thugs, and want Brown to win this and send a message to Obama .... but I see when supporters are really stretching for something and the reporter is trying to insert himself as part of the story of this miraculous campaign. Recognize the leeches my friend.

[ Parent ]
You are incorrect, and here's why.... (0.00 / 0)
...again, let's say for the sake of argument that McCormick slipped when he hit the barrier.  Fine.   He was chasing a politician who literally wouldn't answer his question ("Is there anyone else who has a question?").

How does that justify what Meehan did afterwards?  There was NO reason for him to accost McCormick, ask or his credentials, or otherwise interfere with his progress.

He was blocking to let Coakley get away.  He was purposely being physically intimidating towards a reporter.  He also admits he was wrong, and was to physical.

So who is the partisan?  V3PN, or the guy you're defending who admits he was wrong?

The Goon admitted he was wrong.  Can you?

"(He) is a Meathead"

[ Parent ]
What I'm (0.00 / 0)
not buying is this guy's inability to open his freakin eyeys to see the video for the Nth time to CLEARLY see the thug shoving the reporter at 6 sec.

If he/she/it refuses to see the shove that couldn't be any more clear in the video.............lying mole.....

an even BETTER shot of it.  Thug clearly comes in from the rights and shoves him.

Call me whatever you want, gopelephant, but I most certainly am not blind and refuse to make up shi'ite like "he clipped the barricade with his hip"

Coakley is claiming McCormack worked for Brown and was stalking her. (0.00 / 0)
The Boston Herald is further reporting that Martha Coakley, when questioned about the Washington Lobby Dinner incident, responded with "I DIDN'T SEE WHAT HAPPENED, so I can't say".

Follow this link and see a picture from the Boston  herald of Martha Coakley standing over the victim as he is knocked to the ground by Coakley's goon.

In the photo Martha Coakley is looking directly at the man on the ground.  How can she say see didn't see what happened?  She was the witness closest to the incident.

As for the man stalking her - gimme a break.  Coakley isn't exactly the kind of person people stalk.

stalking (0.00 / 0)
Well she doesn't mean stalking as in he has an obsession. She means Brown sent people down to follow her around and videotape her and who she is meeting with.

[ Parent ]
The reporter works for the Weekly Standard........ (0.00 / 0)
which is based in Washington DC.
The guy lived there and was covering a story in his own town.  He wasn't stalking anyone other than asking a question of a Senate candidate that was eating dinner with lobbyists in his neighborhood.  Besides, the goon has now admitted guilt in being 'too aggressive' with the reporter.

How is Coakley gong to explain why she called a reporter a "Scott Brown stalker' when the staffer has admitted guilt.

Breaking News: Coakley staffer admits guilt in reporter assault (0.00 / 0)
Boston.com is now reporting that the staffer (Michael Meehan) has admitted being 'too aggressive' in the incident and he has tried to apologize for the street skirmish which left one man knocked to the ground while Coakley jumped into a waiting lobbyist-paid limousine.

This is what you get folks!  All this happened while two Attorney's General stood by and watched.  Both Tom Reilly and Martha Coakley were within arm's length and neither did anything to stop the incident from unfolding into an embarrassing skirmish that must now be explained away.  What would have happened to the reporter had cameras not been nearby?  Would he be knocked senseless by the thug named Michael Meehan?  The reporter was lucky to walk away with only some bruises and a torn outfit.

Its the self important liberal insider that revealed itself on the streets of Washington last night.  While Scott Brown was working in his home state to raise $10 here and $20 there while shaking hands and taking phone calls - our lazy, shiftless liberal Martha Coakley was flying first class to Washington to accept money from lobbyists from the health care industries.  It is believed she took in $250K at the dinner, which sold tables for $10,000 a piece.  Then she leaves and has one of her goons rough up a reporter because she didn't want anyone to know she left the state.

The guy's bio is listed here.

On top of being one of Obama's appointees to the Broadcasting Board of Governor's he is a girls basketball coach at Alexandria Country Day School.  The school must be so proud to have the girls basketball coach out knocking down reporters for Obama.
