Breaking: Joe Malone considering run against Delahunt

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Wed Jan 20, 2010 at 21:34:53 PM EST

This evening on Broadside with Jim Braude Republican consultant Todd Domke told Jim that former Massachusetts State Treasurer Joseph Malone is thinking of running for Congress in the 10th Congressional District. Domke stressed that Malone told him to relay the message to Braude.

In yesterdays special election Scott Brown won the 10th Congressional district 59.8% - 39.3% over Martha Coakley, Joe Kennedy got less than one percent.  The 175,202 votes that Scott Brown received were 15% of his statewide total while Coakley's were just shy of 11% of hers.  Brown outperformed his statewide average congressional district turnout, and vote total in this district.

Worth noting is that Brown's senior team, before they were Romney's senior team, were Malone's senior team. Eric Fehrnstrom, Beth Lindstrom, and Priscilla Ruzzo were instrumental in Malone's runs for Treasurer. The Brown machine is revved up and Joe Malone may reclaim them for his next run.

hate to be a downer (0.00 / 0)
but you can't like Scott Brown's chances at the senate seat in 2012, a presidential election year, with Obama on the ballot. Maybe Brown should run against Delahunt? Or McGovern from his own district?

McGovern (0.00 / 0)
has a challenger already.  I believe his name is Marty Lamb.

he already had my vote because he is NOT McGovern

The power of being an incumbent.  You can get away with doing little, you just can't get away with stupid mistakes...at least not until you reach barney Frank status.

How will Malone explain the stealing that occurred under his nose as Treasurer? (0.00 / 0)
No, Malone was no way involved, but the fact is there was extensive corruption (theft) that happened under his watch.  Isn't Malone a yesterday candidate and not someone who embodies the qualities that will address the common challenges we have as a nation?  How did he advance the ball as Treasurer in terms of improving government (and the scandal that was discovered as he exited the job really answers that question.)

If Joe had a D next to his name, you would be ripping him apart as a typical corrupt Dem (and you'd be right) but just because he has a R next to his name you give he a huge pass.  Will you be honest with us Rob and admit that you'd  be signing a different tune about Malone and is baggage if he were a D and not an R?

Festus, (5.00 / 2)
How can we love you if you won't go away?

Kidding....

I think you're onto something (0.00 / 0)
he was alot of things, but stupid was not on the list.  Polling was out...he saw it like everyone else. I'm sure he secured several "stealth" user names in case Brown did prevail as that looked more likely.

Funny & Sad (5.00 / 1)
If it was not so FUNNY that some people actually thought he would leave, it would be sad that he came back!  The basement is a lonely place ...was just a matter of time!

Tell me more about the basement being a lonely place... (0.00 / 0)
...because I still have a penthouse view...the Presidency, both houses of Congress, all MA Congressional seats, the governorship and both branches of the state legislature...

Give it time ... (0.00 / 0)
Just give it time ...give it time.  I'd ask you if you wanted to take a bet or wager on how many seats we Republicans win in 2010 ...but we know your not good with keeping your word when you lose ..and in the long run you probably have a few other names just waiting. What the heck, let's say you kill this new name off, if a Republican can win in the special election for the Senate seat opening in Scott Brown's district?? And I'll offer to switch my name to GOPSueLov'sDems for a month??? (Icckkk...I think I would rather not post if that was the case!)

"Most" of the Congressional Seats.... (0.00 / 0)
Senators are members of "Congress" to, which is comprised of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

In case you didn't notice, Scott Brown is now the Junior United States Senator from Massachusetts.

1 of 12 may be "most" but it is NOT "all".

Frank and Festus always hid right out in the open... (0.00 / 0)
...and I'm doing the same thing here (teasing PP about Festus and her theory about Ditto Boland)...even if I wanted to be clever and register next month and use a completely different pattern of my names (fictional political/social characters that have ideological opposites) eventually my writing style (or my poor spelling and non existent proofreading) would raise suspension (or continually pissing people off) and your go hunting down my ip and figure it out.

It won't take long (like a google of Simple J. Malarkey and your first guess) to figure out my new name on BMG.  But, HOPEFULLY, with my new id (and, like Frank, the primary personality is over at BMG--although you folks gave me a far better send off than BMG commentators) I do hope to have a different persona.  The characters of Frank and Festus were full throttle partisans and so I zealously engaged in bare-knuckle flame wars with you and others here and at BMG.  Yes that is part of the real me and despite attempts at self restraint, I'm sure we'll be going a few rounds.

But hopefully (and as the back-handed complements Festus got in his last post) I have also shown a more thoughtful perspective and my new BMG id is going to represent that.  While it certainly is a left-leaning social/political character, he/it's legacy to American political axiom is particularly relevant in these political times and I intend to challenge the rigid ideologues and their constituencies that are, in my mind, leading us on the path of ruin.

And in that vain Rob, you did not answer my question(s) with regards to Joe Malone...which is, given the legacy of corruption in the Treasurer's Office (which he had no direct part of)...if he had a D next to his name, would you be excited about him running for Congress, or would you be out tearing down is name and reputation?

Big news (0.00 / 0)
It'd be very interesting news and I would be very curious to see how Malone's entrance would be received. As a former statewide elected official I have to contend that he starts off with instant credibility and name recognition though it has been quite a while. The bruising primary he was involved with comes to mind (which people still inanely argue over), but I'm inclined to think he'd be received well in most parts of the party.

We'll have to see. I would have expected Perry to make the jump, but this is just something I did not forsee... or did I?

Perry (0.00 / 0)
Perry is in no doubt. After the high numbers for Brown in the districts that count. It's the first thing I looked at. Joe would run for the money Jeff would run for the people. Who would you work for?

Perry for AG? (0.00 / 0)
I think Perry would be a good candidate for AG against a very damaged Coakley (if she makes it through a primary).

I've met Ray and Don Hussy Both are out if Malone or Perry are in. Ray is a great guy and hopefull future star but when heavy hitters jump in he will be smart. Hussy Dosn't stand a chance

Hedlund (0.00 / 0)
Oh and don't rule out Hedlund.

I am quite excited about this (0.00 / 0)
One of the first campaigns I really got involved in was Malone's campaign for governor in 1998. It was a heart-breaking Election Night, but I still enjoyed that campaign a lot. Actually took a Cellucci bus to the Convention, just to reveal my true allegiances once I got there. Incidentally, that was my first MassGOP convention.

Lots of great people. Lots of energy. And Joe is just a really nice guy. We hosted him at the Duxbury RTC two years ago, and you could tell he still had it in to run another race.

I would have a very VERY hard time picking sides in a Perry v. Malone primary.

I would strongly support Joe Malone...... (5.00 / 1)
For a lot of reasons.  Joe, I am guessing, would have huge favor ability ratings.  His regular appearance on Fox morning news has kept his name in the public media.  He has experience at the statewide level.  Best of all, he is just plain likable.

There is something about Joe that makes you like him.  He is a regular guy.  The fact that he sits and discusses issues with Scott Harshbarger and then breaks out into song during the holidays makes you think that he can work across party lines, be a good diplomatic force.

Maybe what I am trying to say is - he isn't the least bit polarizing.

Only one question - Does he own a pickup truck?

If you disagree with me you are a racist homophobe.

Delahunt must go. (0.00 / 0)
And I'd be ever so happy to see Malone replace him.

But if Perry throws in, he gets my vote.

Step by Step (0.00 / 0)
1) Publicly float the idea
2) Get an initial reaction from the media and others
3) Do a poll
4) Take in all results and weigh viability
5) Make a decision

We can speculate on Joe Malone's viability here, but hard data would help.  Early on Scott Brown trailed big, but those were just name ID driven results.

Joe Malone was elected statewide twice.  He's a known figure and detailed poll results would have some meaning.

Bob Hedlund for Minority Leader.

Mike is right. (0.00 / 0)
A poll that tested some of not only name i.d. but some of the negatives that Joe might have in an election. Like the Treasury scandal under his watch and i believe he was involved in some business problems a few years a go.

Hedlund v. Malone against Delahunt
Posted by  at 11:40 am

You demanded I blog about the 10th congressional district. I listened.

Look, I have no delving insights into the rumblings that either or both Sen. Bob Hedlund and ex-Treasurer Joe Malone will look to challenge 14-year U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt for his South Shore seat.

I do think Hedlund is just as serious as Malone, and probably fits the mold of an "independent voice" much more naturally than any other Bay State Republican that comes to mind.

I don't know Malone very well at all. Met him a few times. Noticed the newly pared down wikipedia page ...

I'll tell you one more thing: don't expect Delahunt to go down without a fight. There are about a million differences between him and Martha Coakley - he's got passion, rhetorical ability and the whole Kennedy dynasty and political machine behind him, for whatever that's worth anymore. He's also about as far left on the political spectrum as you can get before falling off, which may hurt him.

Here's the bottom line: people want change. They want bigger change, faster change, better change. My take is voters are gonna keep changing the channel - click, click, click - until they find something they like or until they feel pols have gotten the message loud and clear. Although there is always a level of voter rebellion against the majority party in power, I think this craving for change cuts across party lines, and that no incumbent, Delahunt included, is safe.

Update: a friend of mine notes a sin of omission, alluded to in the mention of Malone's "pared down wikipedia page." This blog and other coverage of Malone have failed to bring up some of the transgressions that happened on the former treasurer's watch ...

So, let's take a walk down memory lane, shall we?

"DAY OF RECKONING" ARRIVES IN TREASURY SCANDAL, REILLY SAYS STAY TUNED

By Elisabeth J. Beardsley
STATE HOUSE NEWS SERVICE
STATE HOUSE, BOSTON, OCT. 18, 2000......With the guilty pleas of two former state Treasury insiders signaling the first "day of reckoning" in the 1999 theft scandal, Attorney General Thomas Reilly warned today that the focus of the embezzlement probe will now shift to "legal, business and political" circles.

The Treasury was rocked in February of last year when it was revealed that a group of insiders and outsiders had been stealing money from the state department for the preceding seven years. The price tag eventually rose to $9.4 million, of which just over $7 million has been recovered to date.

"The truth is emerging and it is not a pretty picture," Reilly said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. "We're not going to stop, and our goal is to recover a substantial amount if not all of the money. We'll continue to march down that road until we're done."

The multi-year embezzlement scheme took place during the tenure of the former treasurer, Republican Joseph Malone. To date, Malone has not been criminally implicated, but Reilly today would not rule him out. "We're not in the business at this point of ruling people in or out," Reilly said. "We will continue to follow the evidence wherever it takes us."

And that's just a taste of the skeletons that will come back to haunt Malone, should he run.
