Who Runs Gov: Hudak faked Brown endorsement

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Thu Jan 21, 2010 at 16:36:31 PM EST

According to the Washington Post's WhoRunsGov.com Plumline blog Bill Hudak "faked" the Scott Brown endorsement.

This is just crazy. Newly-minted Senator Scott Brown is  catching a bunch of heat for supposedly endorsing a whacky Republican birther candidate for Congress who compared Obama to Osama Bin Laden.

Now, though, the Brown camp is claiming that the GOP birther candidate may have faked Brown's endorsement. A Brown spokesman tells me the birther sent out a release trumpeting Brown's endorsement that hadn't even been approved by Brown and even featured a phony quote from Brown himself!

The candidate in question is Republican Bill Hudak, from Boxford, Massachusetts, who's runing against Dem Rep John Tierney. Hudak has some pretty zany views, decorating his property with a sign depicting him dressed as Osama Bin Laden and insisting he was born in Kenya and retains ties to unnamed extremists.

Yikes. (0.00 / 0)
Either Hudak sunk his candidacy or Brown is going to get caught in a lie.

All the makings of he said-he said situation...meaning we'll probably never know the complete truth.

Sounds like one a a few things could be going on.

The endorsement was faked...but I find it hard to believe Kudak would be that foolish

The endorsement was assumed...but never formally agreed to...and now Brown realized it might have negative effects...so he has to backtrack...but the timing still doesn't make sense....why would Brown be endorsing right now...too early.

The endorsement was real...In which case I don't think Brown would be that foolish.

Hudak isn't acting like he made it up. (0.00 / 0)
Dan Kennedy's blog has more info.
http://www.dankennedy.net

Appears an endorsement was made either Tues night or Wed morning.  The earliest mention of it is a tweet from Hudak on Wed at 11:17am.

The Hudak campaign said this to The Hill:
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-...

"Scott Brown gave his endorsement to Bill Hudak and it's unfortunate that the people Scott Brown surrounds himself with are backing down from a commitment that their boss already made," said Tyler Harber, a spokesman for Hudak.

Harber added that Hudak and Brown are friends and that Hudak worked tirelessly for Brown during his Senate bid.

"If you went to Bill's office right now you'd probably still find Brown's people packing their stuff up," he said.

It's surprising to me that he'd press the issue since faked or not it just makes things worse.  But since he does seem to be pressing it, I wonder if we will see an email or voice mail from the Brown people that backs up Hudak.

Not sure (0.00 / 0)
So far all I've heard is someone else saying Brown endorsed him.  But I've never heard/read Brown endorse him either in writing or in his voice.  Maybe there was some miscommunication or it was assumed or informally given and withdrawn...no idea.  But unless a press release/email/or recording surfacing directly attributable to Brown, it's just Hudak saying "Yes he did" and Brown and his office saying "No he didn't"

One thing's for sure Hudak's website says directly Brown endorsed him.

The statement from the Brown campaign is weasily. (5.00 / 1)
Neither Scott Brown or anyone connected with his campaign approved that press release before its release or the quote that was attributed to Scott. Bill Hudak is an energetic candidate who has been working hard as a candidate for Congress. Right now, Scott Brown is focused on the job that people elected him to do. That's his number one priority.

It doesn't deny that an endorsement was given, just that an endorsement wasn't approved.  Such a denial works fine so far as the press release is concerned.  But it is awkwardly phrased when concerning a direct quote attributed to Scott.  Either Scott gave a quote or not, approval has little to do with it.

May be overthinking (0.00 / 0)
That one...maybe...just a bit.

Lots of things could or not be true...I guess we have to wait until more info comes out.  I'm not going to into "He didn't deny it, so it must be true" mode just yet.

I dunno..... (0.00 / 0)
Hudak was pretty much in toe with Scott at his North Andover event Moday.

I don't know if it was planned, or if Hudak wanted to just ride his coat tails or what.....but they looked chummy!

Grease Fire

Yes, true-Hudak was walking with Brown as was Sam Meas...... (0.00 / 0)
Sen. Tarr and Rep. Jones were there as well. It was a large event.
This could have been something as simple as someone asking for an endorsment and the other saying sure-in the heat of the moment.
Hudak has provided Brown valuable office space for phone banks, storage and distribution, and meeting space for people.
I think it could have been a simple mis-understanding. I was told that Brown would not attend a fundraiser for a candidate because there was another candidate in the race, thereby a primary was in order.
So, will we find out ? Unless Brown comes out and clears the air-who knows !!

This site went from defending Hudak from an "attack" to...well, attacking Hudak.  And you all did is so seamlessly, as if the first post a few hours ago never happened...I just love this place!

You are so new that you don't even know anyone very well yet.  And, you just missed Festus Garvey who left permanently, I bet you would have liked him.  Just missed him it seems.

Compare their take to the statement of the Brown campaign.  110% rabid defense mode.

This Seems Like a Nothing Story... (0.00 / 0)
perpetuating will probably do damage to both guys for no good reason. I agree with above posters that it is way too early for Brown to be endorsing anybody, and I can see how something like this is assumed. This story makes Brown look wishy washy and Hudak look like a nut, neither is true. People should drop it.

Hate to say it but... (5.00 / 1)
Would Brown make an endorsement on the same day he was going to meet the Congressional Delegation that included Tierney? Kinda would have been bad form since they are about to be colleagues.

Later on in the campaign would have been fine, but not the day Brown was to be introduced to the delegation.

Hudak is Toast (5.00 / 1)
The real problem in this bruhaha is how the Hudak campaign has handled the story.  Here is an excerpt from the story from The Hill:  http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-...

"Scott Brown gave his endorsement to Bill Hudak and it's unforuante that the people Scott Brown surrounds himself with are backing dowm from a commitment that their boss already made," said Tyler Harber, a spokesman for Hudak. [Note: spelling errors as they appear in the original text, not mine]

Scott Brown is the most prominent elected Republican in the state.  The last thing that a candidate needs to do is get on the wrong side of Mr. Brown and his team.  He should have said something like:

We regret any misunderstanding with regard to Mr. Brown's endorsement of Mr. Hudak.  It was our understanding that Mr. Brown had extended his endorsement to Mr. Hudak.  We look forward to working with Mr. Brown to move the Republican agenda forward and serve the people of the Commonwealth.

At minimum, Mr. Hudak should fire Tyler Harber.  Harber is a loose cannon.
