2010 Congressional Preview

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Fri Jan 22, 2010 at 12:45:23 PM EST

The map to the left shows Scott Brown's victory broken down by congressional district from the Boston Globe.  They also did maps showing shift from 2008 and voter turnout.  Earlier, the Boston Globe did the town by town election results for Scott Brown with an interactive map.

Below are the races by district.  I included their cash on hand numbers from their most recent FEC filings.  Incumbents are in bold and Democrats are listed first.  I attempted to remove inactive candidates from the list.  Candidates without FEC filings are not listed.

In recent RMG news, Former State Treasurer Joe Malone is considering running against Bill Delahunt in the 10th congressional district and Greenfield school committee member Keith McCormic is considering running against John Olver in the 1st congressional district.

1) John Ovler (D) $255,892
Andrea Nuciforo (D) $56,885

2) Richard Neal (D) $2,661,740
Tom Wesley (R) $17,729
Jay Scott Fleitman (R) $7,137

3) Jim McGovern (D) $564,933

4) Barney Frank (D) $397,568
Herb Robinson (D) $20
Earl Henry Sholley (R) $2,996
Keith Steven Messina (R) $0

So what (4.00 / 1)
you're saying is.....I just bought a house in the ONLY all-red district!!!!!

Time to get Niki OUT!!!!

She came to my town's Veteran's Day ceremony and instead of going on and on about...you know....veterans and their service....she went on and on about all she was doing down in DC to help veterans.

My wife shushed me....

Niki Must Go !

Tell ya.... (5.00 / 1)
I'd LOVE to run for that seat....but too many people know too many things about me....the dirt wouldn't be too hard to dig up.

Hell, I double-fist Guinness and Bushmills on occassion.

The map has some errors and (0.00 / 0)

Some errors in the 5th.  There were towns that Coakley carried that should be blue.

I'd really like to see data on the proportion of votes carried by Brown in each district.  The 3rd looks mighty red but the two blue spots are the big population centers.

EDited (0.00 / 0)
Earlier the Boston Globe did an interactive map with town-by-town results.  I have now included that in the post.

Initial Results (0.00 / 0)
You are right about towns in red here.  The initial results from the Golbe showed Niki carrying more towns in the Metrowest/Rte 2 corridor such as Acton.  I do not know why there is a change.  Absentee ballots perhaps?  I am only guessing.

Bob Hedlund for Minority Leader.

Yeah and the other way too (0.00 / 0)
I think the Globe's map is a bit off on the Scott Brown side as well.

No way Lawrence was red .. (0.00 / 0)
I think it went 60-40 which is good but to paint it red would be a stretch.

Jon Golnik is a stellar candidate in MA-5. (5.00 / 1)

Sam Meas (0.00 / 0)
Is better. Registering new voters is definitely a key. There are an awful lot of asians Meas can sign up. Enough to beat Tsongas. And yes, I am a Sam Meas supporter.

Sholley is atrocious (0.00 / 0)
against Bawney Fwank.  Anyone know about Keith Messina?

Just what his website says (0.00 / 0)
I've never talked to much less met Keith Messina.  All I know about him is what his website says: www.keithmessina.com.  He seems to be a young constitutionalist who grounds much in a federalist argument.

Jim McGovern MA 3rd - FARC terrorist sympathizer (3.00 / 2)
59% of the vote in the 3rd went for Scott.  Marty Lamb from Holliston is running for the seat and he's a good conservative guy.  He is on Facebook, friend him if you have an interest.  He is also going to be on 96.9 today at 5PM I believe..

Jim McGovern is a joke. Let's take this guy out in 2010! (5.00 / 1)
He's a welfare queen.

gerrymander (0.00 / 0)
The districts are gerrymandered. Barney Frank has Mansfield and Cambridge :(

Gerrymandered Yes (0.00 / 0)
But Cambridge is Capuano's.  He has his district office there and carried it in the primary and Coakley carried it in the general. So Cambridge is squarely in the Blue Box.

If we are allocating our resources across the state I would put Capuano at the bottom of the list of people to challenge.

On the topic of gerrymandering take a look at the state rep and senate districts that criss-cross Cambridge.  It is a swiss cheese design resulting in Cambridge being represented by a large number of people with other towns and cities dropped into the mix.  Maybe something can be done about this in the next redistricting.

[ Parent ]
my town (0.00 / 0)
has 2 state representative spread across a variety of towns.

[ Parent ]
Yes, but (0.00 / 0)
Can anyone explain why Cambridge would have 6 reps and 3 senators other than gerrymandering in some shape or form?

[ Parent ]
well the short answer (0.00 / 0)
Is that there are more reps than senators, so senators represent a larger number of people.  The districts rarely follow town boundaries at their borders...it's common for a rep or senator to have part a town, all the towns in between and part of another town or the other end.  I haven't peeked at a map, but I'd guess that those reps and senators represent towns (or parts of towns) that are outside of Cambridge.  I remember the "gooch" had part of Cambridge, Somerville and part of Charlestown (I think)

districting (0.00 / 0)
Is a mess - designed to dilute the political power of I really think the suburbs.

[ Parent ]
The problem with (0.00 / 0)
Franks district is has Sharon all the way down to South Coast.  If you happen to be a GOP voter in that district Sharon & Taunton alone can put you heavily behind.

I can't figure out McGovern has managed to stay in office in my district.  The sheer number of voters of Worcester must do it for him.

I'm still in disbelief at the statements he made after he held his town hall sessions over the summer.  He was shocked to learn there are people in his district that actually disagree with him.

Frank (0.00 / 0)
is a smart bully, but given his district I'm not sure anyone could beat him.

[ Parent ]
A Decade Ago (0.00 / 0)
When we were still part of Jim McGovern's fiefdom (talk about gerrymandering - Worcester to New Bedford?!) I had hoped that when redistricting came along that we could form our Southeastern Mass district.  Alas, that was the not be and we got stuck in with Barney Frank.

[ Parent ]
Take heart (0.00 / 0)
I still am part of the McGovern fiefdom (North Attleboro).  Some of the reddest towns sucked in by the gravitational force of Worcester.  This town went for Brown 3-1 (almost 4-1 is some precincts) and has been voting Poirer for years....needless to say McGovern does not represent our views :)  Frank may be a bit more senior/visible/colorful, but on issues, they are pretty much interchangeable....They are tops on my list of 3 non essential personnel...along with Marky.

WOULD have Cambridge if it were in his district...but yes, it's gerrymandered.

This is awesome work! (4.50 / 2)
I think another useful one (if you're willing) would be to create this same map, but with State Senate and Representative districts.

I think this might be a pretty good tool for prospective candidates to see how things went in the last election.

I realize we might want to have a few more federal offices, but the state is much worse off than the Capital, we might benefit the Commonwealth by having a better mix in the State house.

The First District (0.00 / 0)
I think that is is worth noting that many of the population centers in the 1st are Red:

Athol
Belchertown
Fitchburg
Gardner
Leominster
Orange
Westfield
West Springfield

In the others, there was a significant improvement:

Adams (+9%)
Easthampton (+12%)
Great Barrington (+7%)
Greenfield (+10%)
Holyoke (+16%)
Montague (+11%)
North Adams (+5%)
Pittsfield (+8%)

So, should I run?

You're Gonna... (4.00 / 1)
Need about $200,000.

[ Parent ]
Probably more (0.00 / 0)
The first Congressional seat is really tough for a Republican to win.  Yes, the GOP has won in Western MA in the past, but this district profile has changed a lot in recent years.  You'll need more than $200,000 to win.  If you, or any, Republican wins the Dems control redistricting in 2012 when Massachusetts is losing a seat anyway.

However, 2010 is shaping up to be a big Republican year and I doubt Olver has the ability to be a strong campaigner anymore (if he ever was).

If you ask me, I check the "yes" box.  I don't want to discourage people from running.  I'm just trying to give you an honest assessment of what you'll be up against.

Bob Hedlund for Minority Leader.
