Brad Marston for State Representative

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Sun Jan 24, 2010 at 09:16:57 AM EST

Brad Marston is running for State Representative in the Eighth Suffolk District district against incumbent Democrat Martha "Marty" Walz.  According to their 2009 year end reports with OCPF Marston had $4,169.32 cash on hand and Walz had $83,153.07.  Neither candidate had any liabilities.

Brad Marston is a long time political veteran, but a first time candidate for office.  He brings 25 years of business and management experience and served as the Senior Vice President of Mortgage-Backed Securities Trading with a major regional firm based in New York City.  More information can be found on his campaign website bradmarston.ning.com or his facebook page.  Brad Marston is set up very well in the new media an social networking aspect of his campaign.

Martha Walz is a 3 term incumbent State Representative who serves on the board of directors at NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts.

There was no Republican candidate in 2008 or 2006.  In 2004, when the seat was open, Democrat Martha Walz defeated Republican Richard Babson by a 75% to 23% margin.  Third party candidate Thomas White received 2% of the vote.

The 8th Suffolk district is a very difficult district for any Republican.  It consists of 9 precincts in Boston (Back Bay, Beacon Hill, West End) and 5 precincts in Cambridge.

Healey + Mihos vs Patrick + Ross 2006 Results:

8th Suffolk
Cambridge: 12% + 3% vs 73% + 2%
Boston: 21% + 4% vs 73% + 2%

Fortunately, I have precinct level data for Boston (HT: MerrimackMan), but unfortunately not Cambridge for Scott Brown's victory in his race for United States Senator.  I do not have precinct level data for 2008 or 2006 and only included the citywide results.  It should be noted that the portion of Boston in the 8th Suffolk is more favorable to Republicans than the city average.

Please read the other Republican candidate and district profiles I have done for the Massachusetts 2010 elections.

Steve Adam State Representative, 2nd Franklin.
Kurt Hayes State Representative, 37th Middlesex.
Kara Fratto State Representative, 30th Middlesex.
Paul Avella State Representative, 2nd Middlesex.
Shaunna O'Connell State Representative, 3rd Bristol.
Kevin Kuros State Representative, 8th Worcester.
Geoff Diehl State Representative, 7th Plymouth.
Patrick Foran State Representative, 1st Barnstable
Ryan Fattman State Representative, 18th Worcester

2008 (5.00 / 1)

2006 vs 2008 (0.00 / 0)
Turnout for Brown in Boston was up 54% versus Healey in 2006 in the Boston precincts in the district. Total turnout was up 15.5% in 2010 versus 2006 and it was all GOP votes.

Key to victory will be holding on to Brown voters, identifying and motivating 1st Time and Low Propensity Voters.

Unopposed (0.00 / 0)
Is the key word for far too many of the state reps and senators.  Lack of challengers and consistent challengers has resulted in too many reps and senators who do not focus on their districts and constituents.

For example, the entire Cambridge delegation (3 senators and 6 reps) went unopposed in 2008.  Regardless of which party you support, this is not healthy for the citizens of the Commonwealth.  We need to have contested races regardless of the party of the person holding the seat as the incumbent.

Ideally there would also be contested primaries.

While I do not live in the 8th, I congratulate Brad for his decision to run and look forward to a race that has many debates and / or forums so the candidates can discuss the issues and people can make a better informed decision rather than having the choice of the incumbent or "BLANK".

Debates (5.00 / 2)
The incumbent is probably too smart to agree to debate me. Actually based on her voting record and the way things work in the State House, I should probably challenge Bob DeLeo to debate.

Brad was tireless and loyal while working for the McCain camp. (5.00 / 2)
Evem during the low point, when most felt he was done, Brad was still there.
We need more people like Brad.

I agree (5.00 / 1)
Brad is a strong candidate in a bad district.  The guy needs to get a house on the cape.

Then again, who knows?  2010 is shaping up like a strong year.  You never know who's going to be the next Joseph Cao.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J...

Bob Hedlund for Minority Leader.

Brad's taking the debate to the Dems in one of the toughest districts in the state.  His a really smart guy.  He'll win the debate.  He's got my support.

Winning the debate (5.00 / 1)
Thank you for your words of support. Yes. I think I'll win the debate. More importantly I think my campaign will win the ground game. Through our efforts for Scott Brown, we have already called 5,000 high propensity voting Republicans and Independents and picked up dozens of very motivated volunteers here in the district, from surrounding areas and online.

The good news for a State Rep District like yours (0.00 / 0)
You really only need about 6,000 votes to win in an Non-Presidential Year.

Votes to win (0.00 / 0)
Based on the numbers from the 6 elections I think I'll need a minimum of 8500. But we have a strategy to get there.

2010 will be a great year (0.00 / 0)
Sure I'd love to be running in a district that Scott won by 65%. But hell? Where would the fun be in that?

Thank you all (5.00 / 1)
I appreciate the words of support and acknowledgment of the effort I have put in on behalf of the party.

In the last two years I have volunteered for Doug Obey, John McCain, Doug Bennett, Rob Fortes and of course, Scott Brown. In fact on 1/19th I got a call from a friend on Senator McCain's staff asking me "So how does it feel to finally win one of these damn things?"

I understand that this will be a difficult district to win but I decided to run back in July and filed with OCPF in September. Anyone who doesn't have a candidate for Rep. or Senator running in their district, I would ask for your financial and or volunteer support.
