Decker To Run For Galluccio's Former Seat

by: Garrett Quinn

Mon Jan 25, 2010 at 14:46:02 PM EST

(Garrett Quinn for Senate! Pounds fist on table! - promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno)

Cambridge City Councilor Marjorie Decker will announce her candidacy for Anthony Galluccio's now vacant state senate seat on Tuesday. She joins a growing field that includes Cambridge attorney Tim Flaherty and Charlestown attorney Dan Hill.

Decker failed to make the ballot for Cambridge City Council in 2009 and ran a write-in campaign.

Flaherty is the son of former speaker and convicted felon Charlie Flaherty.

deserve the quality of representation that they are going to get from this moonbat (Decker) or these two hacks (Flaherty or Hill).

Let's not forget Son of Albano (0.00 / 0)
Progressive Democrat Michael Albano Enters Senate Race

Progressive Democrat Michael Albano, a small business owner from Chelsea,  announced today that he is officially a candidate for State Senate in the special election to fill the open seat vacated by Anthony Galluccio.  Albano, 48, says that people in Massachusetts are looking for new leadership to help restore confidence in local government.

"People are hurting and they're frustrated," Albano explained, "and we need new leaders to take the reins of government and move us in a new direction.  I'm running for State Senate to offer that new leadership."

Albano has never been a candidate for public office, but he is no stranger to electoral politics.  His father Sal was a Somerville State Senator from 1984 to 1990 and was a maverick voice for political reform and progressive public policy.  "I learned from my father," Albano said, "that when you stand up for what you believe in and bring honesty and accountability to public service you can bring people together, restore their confidence and really move things in the right direction.  We need that now more than ever, and I'm looking forward to this campaign.  People need something to believe in to get involved."

The April 13 Democratic Primary doesn't give a relative newcomer much time to reach out to the voters in a diverse district stretching from Allston/Brighton to Revere and Saugus, but Albano says he is undaunted.  He points out, "I'm going to run this campaign in the same way I will be State Senator -- I'm going to get out into the communities, bring people together, and listen and be accessible.  I'm looking forward to making my case on the campaign trail."

Albano joins a field of likely Democratic candidates including former State Senator Galluccio's Chief of Staff and Everett City Councilor Sal DiDomenico, Cambridge City Councilor Marjorie Decker, Attorney Tim Flaherty the son of former House Speaker Charles Flaherty, and Attorney Dan Hill of Charlestown.

Since the GOP is giving up on this seat (0.00 / 0)
Are there any Libertarians available. Cantabridgians should love the foreign policy position of any Ron Paul acolyte.

"Work is the essence of Man."

Why is there no Republican challenger? (0.00 / 0)
I'm a registered Democrat, but I would love to see a good Republican challenger for this seat. There is a real chance that a dreadful candidate could be the Democratic nominee and I would like very much to have an alternative.

Massachusetts elections should actually mean something other than a post-primary formality.

"former speaker and convicted felon" (5.00 / 1)
Don't you think this comment is a little bit redundant?

It's like "ATM Machine."

And the Field Grows (0.00 / 0)
Add to the growing list Dennis Benzan from Belmont.  He, like the other candidates, is a Democrat.

As near as I can tell the list is now:

Dan Hill, Charlestown
Marjorie Decker, Cambridge
Tim Flaherty, Cambridge
Michael Albano, Chelsea
Sal DiDeminoco, Everett
Denise Simmons, Cambridge
Dennis Benzan, Belmont

While I am not sure if Garrett actually lives in the district (he could always move), I think it would be exciting if he put his hat in the ring.

The people await his response.

At what point is a conservative viable? (0.00 / 0)
Cambridge Democrats are the most left wing of the left wing.  We have open primaries where unenrolled voters can vote in either primary.  Even in a Democrat primary, with 7 left wingers and 1 conservative could the unenrolled voters make that conservative viable?

I don't know, but it's something to consider.

Hard to Say (0.00 / 0)
Cambridge has historically supported Progressive candidates but there is an underlying "conservative" leaning that has not voted for conservative candidates.  I say underlying leanings in terms of religion and belief in fiscal responsibility.  It also takes candidates that remain in the neighborhood and run more than once as it is rare for any Cambridge candidate to be elected on the first run, let alone a Republican.

The best I can say is that conservatives and Republicans are not openly supported but there seems to be an acceptance of conservative principles.

If Garrett were to run against Rep Toomey that would be an interesting challenge.  He has not faced a challenge in the general in some time and his last real challenge was from Avi Green back in 2004 (I think I remember the date right).  Garrett would be a person to work hard and push the issues to the forefront.

I look forward to seeing his nascent candidacy develop (see how he is now shown as running).

If I run I'll challenge (0.00 / 0)
Tim Toomey. He's been a state rep since I was eight.
