Lew Evangelidis for Sheriff

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Mon Jan 25, 2010 at 17:31:09 PM EST

BREAKING NEWS:

State Representative Lew Evangelidis (R) has announced that he is officially running for Worcester County Sheriff.  This news has been expected for some time.  He currently represents the Frist Worcester district including the towns of Holden, Hubbardston, Oakham, Princeton, Rutland, Sterling and Westminster.  More information can be found on his campaign website LewEvangelidis.org or his facebook page.

This is an open seat.  Current Sheriff Guy Glodis (D) is running for Auditor.  Lew Evangelidis currently has $67,782.37 cash on hand according to his 2009 year end report with OCPF.  Keith Nicholas (U) is the only other candidate with a current filing with $200.00 cash on hand.

Lew Evangelidis issued the following statement via email:

Good Evening -

I just wanted to congratulate all of the activists for all of your hard work in helping Scott Brown get elected to the U.S. Senate.  This was a critical time for us to get involved and have our voices heard against the nonsense in Washington.

I wanted all of you to know that I will be a candidate for Worcester County Sheriff this coming November.  As a former assistant district attorney, assistant state prosecutor and having worked in the private sector for many years I hope you would see me as an ideal candidate for Worcester County Sheriff.  With your help I think that we can break down the old Worcester County political machine and have an independent and professional Sheriff's Department.

I am certainly looking forward to working with all of you in the future.

Sincerely,

Lew Evangelidis

MORE BELOW THE FOLD....

Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie :: Lew Evangelidis for Sheriff
Worcester county is one of the most Republican areas in the state.

In 2010 Scott Brown defeated Martha Coakley by a 60.9% to 37.9% margin.  He carried every city and town in the county except the city of Worcester (47%) and the town of Harvard (45%).  Scott Brown defeated Martha Coakley by a 52% to 47% margin statewide.

In 2008, Barack Obama defeated John McCain by a 55.6% to 41.6% margin.  This was McCain's 3rd best county in Massachusetts behind Plymouth and Barnstable.  John McCain was defeated by a 61.8% to 36.0% margin statewide.

Would Rep. Evangelidis be in favor of eliminating the office of County Sheriff? (0.00 / 0)
While written into the state constitution, it will be tough to go away, but if there were one job/agency in Massachusetts that is duplicative, unnecessary and laden with patronage, it is the County Sheriff offices throughout the state.

Their most important function is to run the minimum security prisons, which can easily be absorbed into the Dept of Corrections.  Another (less important) function is supplying civil process servers which can easily be absorbed by off-duty police (hey, pull their detail pay and give them civil process serving pay and we all win!).  Beyond that, Sheriff offices focus on building their empires and go after a host of state and federal grants to build up a variety of bureaucracies.  Many secure Homeland security funds to build regional SWAT Teams (which the State Police should do).  Even the "good ideas" like regionalizing police dispatch centers can be handled else where.

So why don't we just save millions in tax payer dollars and eliminate these arcane posts?

Or why don't we work to eliminate small police departments (5.00 / 1)
and have the sheriff's patrol?  Rutland, Barre, other small towns in Worcester county would save countless dollars by outsourcing their police services to the sheriff.

I was going to suggest that... (0.00 / 0)
...but did not because I don't have enough info about it...

In stares that have real Sheriff Departments, like Florida, were they do a lot of heavy lifting in terms of law-enforcement/public safety (unlike the Sheriff hacks around here) they still have local police forces (as well as Highway patrol, which is like our State Police) so I don't know the in's and outs about that enough to make such a suggestion.

What insight do you have in this area to make such a suggestion (aside from the surface appearance of duplication?)

It's different in non-abolished counties. (0.00 / 0)
Absolutely should go in Middlesex, Suffolk, etc.  That is where the empire building you dscribe occurs.  Plymouth, Barnstable, Bristol - all have active law enforcement roles, operate jails, and serve multi-town functions like regionalization and disaster preparedness.

Abolished Counties (0.00 / 0)

Is there a list of counties in which the sheriff and treasurer have been abolished.  Middlesex has an elected sheriff but no treasurer.  Plymouth has both.  Is there a list out there?

Here ya go... (0.00 / 0)

It appears that all counties are abolished except Nantucket, Dukes, Barnstable, Bristol and Plymouth.

[ Parent ]
No... (0.00 / 0)
They ALL operate prisons and why can't multi-twon functions like dispatch and disaster preparedness be handled by the State police or MEMA (which is exclusively focused on disasters)

[ Parent ]
So...where's the Dukes and/or Nantucket prisons, smarty? (0.00 / 0)

Which GOP candidate is going to step up and keep the (0.00 / 0)

There is a Republican Selectman that I suspect will announce soon, but I'm not disclosing the details yet.

This is actually going to be one of the most exciting (0.00 / 0)
races of the year--Lew is great and I think he will be an awesome sheriff. He'll also groom people and we'll have state rep & senate candidates for the next generation.  That's party-building.

Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.

State House Loss is Worcester's Gain (0.00 / 0)
I'll hate having to have Rep. Evangelidis leave the State House but having him as sheriff will certainly be Worcester County's gain!
