David Dunford for State Representative

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Mon Feb 01, 2010 at 11:02:49 AM EST

David Dunford is running for State Representative in the 4th Barnstable district against 2 term incumbent Sarah Peake.  David Dunford has $7,164.60 and Sarah Peake has $31,843.16  cash on hand according to their 2009 year end reports with OCPF.

David Dunford is a 2 term Selectman in the town of Orleans.  He has also served as Chairman of Orleans' Community Preservation Committee and on the Board of Directors of Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod.  After serving as a Senior Vice President of Merrill Lynch he founded the Bank of Cape Cod in 2006.  David Dunford's formal kickoff is this Friday, February 5th at the Four Points Sheraton in Eastham, MA.  More information can be found on his campaign website DavidDunford.org.

The 4th Barnstable district is still a good one for a Republican but has been trending more liberal in recent years.  It consists of the towns of Chatham, Eastham, Harwich, Orleans, Provincetown, Truro, and Wellfleet.  This is the last district on Cape Cod where the "elbow" towns trend more conservative and the towns on the end trend very liberal.

In 2004, Shirley Gomes (R) defeated Sarah Peake (D) by a 57% to 43% margin.
In 2006, Shirley Gomes retired creating an open seat.  Sarah Peake (D) defeated Aaron Maloy (R) by a 56% to 44% margin.
In 2008, Sarah Peake (D) defeated Donald Howell (R) by a 68% to 32% margin.

The 2010 Results are Strange For this District (0.00 / 0)
Turnout was Down (It was up in general vs. 2006 even on the Cape)

Chatham and Harwich seemed about where I would have expected them but Eastham and Orleans were much more liberal than they should have been.

Luckily, Dunford is from Orleans, where it appears Brown underperformed the most so hopefully he can turn that around.

Forget Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown....

Voters in FL? (0.00 / 0)
A lot of retired citizens who live on the Cape live down in Florida during the winter.  These people tend to be rich, white seniors.  This could explain both the drop off in voters and the Democratic shift vs the state average.

Just a guess.

Bob Hedlund for Minority Leader.

Select Board Chairman Joseph Michaud (R) is likely going to run for John Quinn's (D-Dartmouth) open State Representative Seat. (Quinn is running for Bristol County Sheriff vs. Thomas Hodgson)

Pretty Sure Brown won this State Rep District....

Yes, WE WILL! (0.00 / 0)
I've known Joe Michaud for perhaps a decade or more at this point as a loyal member of the Dartmouth Republican Town Committee.  Joe is also a Lt. Col. in the Army National Guard in the JAG corps (a la Scott Brown).

Joe, an attorney in New Bedford, is also serving his first term as a Dartmouth Select Board member after previously serving several years as a member of the Dartmouth Finance Committee.  Joe Michaud was the chairman of the FinCom for years and spent 2 out of his past 3 years as chairman of the Select Board.

I've been talking to Joe for months now about the possibility of running for the state legislature and I'm pleased to report that Joe Michaud will be seeking re-election to the Dartmouth Select Board (April 6) and then the open State Rep. seat being vacated by John Quinn.

The district, the 9th Bristol, is basically all of Dartmouth with portions of New Bedford, Lakeville, and Freetown.  Dartmouth is probably 90% of the voters (not all that much of an exaggeration).  Scott Brown did indeed carry this district.

There are at least 2-3 Democrats running for the same seat.  I'm actively involved with Joe Michaud's plans and hope to be celebrating a victory on November 2.
