New Policy Re: IP Addresses

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Mon Feb 01, 2010 at 14:17:18 PM EST

Effective immediately. There will be at maximum two accounts allowed per IP address.  For special cases where more than two people live in a home that shares an IP address email us. We'll make an exception on a case by case basis.  Any IP address that has more than two accounts will be banned from Red Mass Group.

Thank you,

Rob

Good idea (0.00 / 0)
I might have been even more strict and limit IP addresses to only 1 account unless you can honestly explain a darn good reason such as mulitple people in a household.

Personally, I considered starting a second one when I was chairman of the MassGOP's PR Committee but I never opened it up.

I figure love or hate me, everyone knows who I am and can react accordingly.

Go slow EaBo . . . . . (0.00 / 0)
What's this about?

Does this have anything to do with GOPwoman/MrNixon?

Apparently (0.00 / 0)
It seems to have to do with the proliferation of trolls on both sides of the gubernatorial rift within the party.

Yes (5.00 / 1)
This has much to do with the Mihos haters who were starting to take over the site. It was getting out of hand and hurting the blog. If someone wants to pontificate about how much they hate Christy Mihos then they should purchase www.christymihossucksballs.com

They should not clutter our blog with a million posts about him and turn this place into Christy Sucks Central. There are people in the Massachusetts center-right community other than Christy Mihos.

Plus, their writing was atrocious and made me want to die by paper cuts to the eyes.

Are IP addresses being traced for user accounts? (0.00 / 0)
If so then why not just post every IP address with each post on the tag line where you have the user name.  Create a link where you show all the user names with the same IP address.  Plus if you really wanted to get around using a different IP address for each account there are ways around that.  But if its a real problem link the IP with the usernames so we all can see them.

Good point (0.00 / 0)
I use my account from several different places....including at work sometimes where I am behind a NAT with 500 other users.  Theoretically 499 other valid accounts could come from this IP.

Also...the nature of IP addressing is that very few people actually have static IP addresses anymore ...they all use DHCP, so while you often get the same IP address for an extended amount of time, getting a new cable modem, or being off the grid for beyond the lease period of DHCP and you'll have a different one.

I understand the policy, but I'm not sure it can be that effective.  Especially with easy access to anonymous web proxies.

IP Adresses (0.00 / 0)
Not sure this is really going to work, anonymous web proxies will allow the bad guys to mess with you and NAT will mean only have two users per organization. It's not appropriate to publish anyone's IP address.

Absolutely (0.00 / 0)
They are also inviting the bad guys to harvest IP addresses and use them for spam and forgery purposes.  I could do lots of damage with some of the things I have learned for legal purposes.  But I choose to use my powers for good instead of evil :)

End to anonymous posting??? (0.00 / 0)
I suggested this and had my head torn off for it.

However, it is true that to be a fully respected media outlet, there had to be transparency to some degree.

Anonymity (5.00 / 2)

Fine line between fact and opinion. (0.00 / 0)
Anonymity defines that degree.

I am not crazy enought to suggest it again, I just hope people see when i did suggest it, it was to enhance credability and scale back the troll holes.

[ Parent ]
I remember that! You got soo much shit for suggesting it! LOL (0.00 / 0)
And you were right.

Not really (0.00 / 0)
Everyone knows who I am, I've never made it a secret & I've deliberately chosen not to hide my identity.

That said, I haven't a freaking clue who half you people are, including & especially those who usually spar with me the most.

Anonymous commenters (5.00 / 1)
Anonymous commenters and posters contribute to the site in a positive way.

If someone wants to post something on the site and remain anonymous we will respect that.

Anonymous? (5.00 / 1)

Being anonymous for most out here in the Happy Valley is a matter of survival out this way. Google Phoebe Prince and you will see how liberal elitists bully out this way. Please do not tell me you are that clueless.

Stan Lee (0.00 / 0)
You forgot my favorite psuedonym, that is Stan Lee of Marvel Comics.  That said, everyone knew/knows who Stan was - could see his picture, write him a letter to the editor, and maybe shake his hand at a convention.

With all due respect to anono-posters here (5.00 / 1)
Writing anti Richard Tisei rants or calling Richard Tisei names, right or wrong, should not be equated to the anti-English oppression writings of Ben Franklin or the satirical wit of Samuel Clements.

They were giants. Their observations were based in fact. And they were giving voice to many

Again, no offense to the anono-posters here, but largely they are representing their own personal opinions and less interested in informing others than they are of attacking.

Lately, attacks on Brock have not made me too happy to read postings here.

Cant we all just get along?
