In just a few hours, +500 people join "Draft Hedlund" Facebook Group

by: South Shore Republican

Mon Feb 01, 2010 at 15:27:06 PM EST

::UPDATE:: 500 people as of 7:51PM. Still only a few hours after launch.

As we live in an age of money bombs and online media drives, I wanted to give some credit to a purely grassroots/netroots effort that organically popped up today. Just as Jeff Perry tested the waters for his candidacy via Facebook last week, some activists put together a "Draft Hedlund" Facebook group that appeared to be made this morning... in the matter of just a couple of hours almost 300 people joined! It shows there is some major excitement in the 10th for a Republican challenge to Bill Delahunt, but also for the GOP's libertarian/conservative State Senator Bob Hedlund.

Its going to be an interesting primary and an interesting race, but if you want to check out a cool display of some online activism take a look at the Draft Hedlund facebook group. If you had told me in 2008 that 300 people would join a potential GOP congressional candidate's page in just under a couple hours, I wouldn't have believed it. But check it out folks, welcome to 2010! Speaks volumes about the progress we've made, and what activists think about Hedlund.

I just went on......it actually is 353 now. 5:30pm! Go for it! (0.00 / 0)

It's 5:58pm and he has 418 members.... (0.00 / 0)
I would support him.  Bob Hedlund is one of the state Republicans that I have always admired.  He is a very solid guy and knows everything there is to know about beer!

Hedlund Money Bomb to Follow???? (0.00 / 0)
Hedlund has a well-oiled machine.  Delahunt is under the table at Siros sweating bullets!

Hedlund Rumor (4.00 / 1)
There is a rumor that the Liberty people (Ron Paul) are going to get behind Bob Hedlund nationally.

He hung out with them quite a bit at the 2008 convention - made lots of friends. (0.00 / 0)

I'd be surprised if they didn't (0.00 / 0)
Hedlund has long been known as a libertarian and I understand that he campaigned for Ron Paul.

I'd love to see Hedlund in Congress - we need more like him in there.

[ Parent ]
Why? Hedlund voted for RomneyCare (3.00 / 1)
Bob Hedlund also voted for a constitutional amendment guaranteeing government healthcare.

Jeff Perry vote "no" on both.  He was one of two who voted against RomneyCare.  As a Freshman Representative, to boot!

Jeff Perry doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk.

Jeff Perry is the real limited Government Conservative in this race, with the record to back it up.

They like me, they really, really like me!

Hedlund has a history with the libertarian movement (0.00 / 0)
He's been a member of the Republican Liberty Caucus since he was first elected.  He's also not scared to work closely with NORML, rare for any lawmaker these days.  The Ron Paul activists are very loyal - Hedlund came to Paul's defense at a time when Paul was being dismissed and ridiculed by others in the GOP.

Perry sounds great, I'll have to learn more about him!

[ Parent ]
He is (0.00 / 0)
Jeff Perry is definitely more of a conservative than a libertarian, but he's actually a conservative.  He actually supports reducing the size, scope and cost of government.  He actually supports following the constitution, cutting taxes, cutting spending and balancing the budget.  Some libertarians might disagree with Perry on a few social or foreign policy issues.

This race could be the best member in the Senate vs the best member in the House.  It will be painful for a lot of us to be on the other side of either of these men.  They are both great.

A few Jeff Perry "liberty" notes:

1) He was one of just 2 legislators to vote against Romneycare.  The other was Dan Webster.  Perry had the courage to do so as a freshman rep while Hedlund actually voted for it.
2) He actively fought against the pandemic flu forced vaccination bill.  Hedlund initially voted for this bill, but has since come around to the right side.
3) He is sponsoring the 10th amendment bill here in MA.  C4L members should be familiar.  Not sure where Hedlund is on this but would guess for.

Again, both choices are great.  This is an "A" vs and "A+."

Hedlund helped defeat Pandemic Bill. Perry supports Pandemic Bill. (0.00 / 0)
Mike, Hedlund as member of the conference committee has helped to defeat the Pandemic Bill, Perry issued written statements in support of House Bill.  Mass Liberty Preservation Association has written extensively about this on their web site and in blogs.  If you're trying to pass Perry off as any kind of Libertarian that is a stretch.  Clearly, if Perry goes to Washington we are looking at another neo-con.

Big fan of Hedlund (0.00 / 0)
I never said otherwise.

I also didn't say Perry was a libertarian, I said he was a conservative.  It's actually the first line in my last comment.

Independent Republican? (0.00 / 0)
Sounds like Perry, though not a libertarian, would make some of the "Dr. No" fans happy.  It would be great to have a Congressman who will vote against bloated Republican budgets and boondoggles -- what I would call a real "independent Republican."

Hedlund - facial hair (0.00 / 0)
Voters don't trust Politicians with facial hairs. Ask Bob to shave. Lincoln and 19th century politicans get a pass.

I dunno...he kinda looks like the guy in the Ghost and Mrs. Muir... (0.00 / 0)

Still hope they avoid a primary... (0.00 / 0)
I have no dog in this fight, and think either Perry or Hedlund would be a great candidate.  Generally I also support the idea of primaries, but in this case I still think it would be better to avoid a primary.  I just don't like the idea of seeing one of them taken out of the mix.

Ditto (0.00 / 0)
I like both Bob Hedlund & Jeff Perry very much.  I am personally going to hate to see both gentlemen face each other off in the primary.

I have a deep respect for Joe Malone, but I don't personally know him therefore I don't have the same attachment.

That said, in a fight between Bob & Jeff... ouch, that one just hurts.  Neither is my district but both are in my region.  I am currently & will certainly continue to monitor the developmenets for this seat.

Agree and a Thought (0.00 / 0)
I too like both Jeff and Bob and do not relish the idea of them running for the same seat.  While I love primaries as I think that the bring both more attention to the ultimate nominee, this one will result in a fine representative not being in the general election.

Since each seems intent on running for Congress, would either one of them consider a run against Barney instead of Bill?

On the face, it may seem like a fools errand, but that was what was being said about Scott Brown in many circles prior to the last couple of weeks of his election.

I think is would be good for the Commonwealth and the representative of its citizens for Barney to face a strong challenger this fall.

Therefore, I would propose that rather than face off against each other in the primary that they face off against Bill and Barney in the general.

[ Parent ]
Geographic Problem (0.00 / 0)
The problem in your suggestion is that either Bob Hedlund or Jeff Perry would have to move out of the 10th Congressional & into the nearby 4th Congressional in order to run against Barney Frank.

[ Parent ]
My Understanding (0.00 / 0)
Is that there is no requirement to live in the district to either run for Congress or represent the district in Congress (I do favor representatives that live in the District but would vote for someone who lived in the state and would move into the District).  I think you are required to be an inhabitant of the state in which the district is.  I remember that there has been a lot of discussion about making changes for resident vs. inhabitant and actually being a resident in the actual district but do not think that there have been any changes.

If my recollection holds then either one would be able to challenge in the 4th with the other in the 10th.  I think those two challenges would be better than a primary that pits Jeff vs. Bob vs. Joe, etc.

[ Parent ]
May be wrong (0.00 / 0)
but I think the loophole is that you have to be a resident of the district at either the time of election or swearing in.  I haven't looked it up in awhile, however.

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
This is a race between an "A" and an "A+."  You can't go wrong with either guy and it's a shame one of them will have to lose.

I have to say I was amused.... (4.00 / 1)
...when I was invited to join the Facebook group "Draft Bb Hedlund for Congress"  by......Bob Hedlund!

He's drafting himself!

Made me smile.

They like me, they really, really like me!

Cool and Sucky at the Same Time (5.00 / 2)
All of a sudden a GOP boom and three of my favorite state Republicans are running for the same office. What's next Karyn Polito is going to move to Falmouth and enter too?

Hey Joe, drop out, head the state GOP. Hedlund, you a wild man, a bit of a freak, but I like you. Go for it. Perry, you may be my favorite in the bunch, but, as a state rep, your base may be too small to mess with Hedlund. Plus, he'll run you over with his bike if he loses. Run for state Senate and build your creds. Your a guy with a bright future. Or just run run for Congress and screw Hedlund. It will be a wild fun ride.

Thats pretty much exactly my read on it!

Hedlund ..Facebook (0.00 / 0)
Hey Fist Pounder Paul, I was curious about invite too. (disclosure-I am supporter and friends with one of the Admins.)  It actually came from admin of his fan page not Bob.  It really was more organic than you portray. Bob's facebook page today indicates he is posting something regarding his intentions there soon.

OK, still... (0.00 / 0)
...it was written in the First Person, and as I said, I thought it was funny, not that it was "wrong'.

Just thought "drafting yourself" was amusing.

There's a "Draft Paul Ferro for Higher Office" Facebook page.  I didn't create it, nor do have control over it.

I still invited a bunch of my friends to join it!

They like me, they really, really like me!
