Is Baker/Tisei our best chance at beating Deval?

by: PitBullGOP

Wed Feb 03, 2010 at 07:39:33 AM EST

(A case for Baker/Tisei but mostly Baker.   - promoted by Garrett Quinn)

(With the sudden influx of trolls and "insiders" working for campaigns posting on RMG, before you read I want to assure you I don't work for anyone. Every editor on here knows me personally, and several people know me and may not actually know it.)

I understand the hate for the Baker/Tisei ticket. I get why conservatives are fuming that Baker is "our" candidate, and I understand why people are upset over Tisei. I don't agree with Tisei on many political issues, and even though Baker doesn't really have many stances, I assume if you put a gun to his head and asked where he is on issues, I wouldn't agree with many of his answers.

Ideally, I wish both were more conservative. Heck, I wish Tisei was the slightest bit conservative! But we have to look at the ultimate goal, then figure out the options.

We are trying to get Deval Patrick out of office. We aren't trying to get the best conservative candidate in office.

PitBullGOP :: Is Baker/Tisei our best chance at beating Deval?
As all of us sit here and complain and moan about the choice, please ask yourself this: with these tickets, what is the best chance at getting Deval out of office? I think the choice is clearly the Baker/Tisei ticket.

(For arguments sake, I will assume that Mihos doesn't make it out of the primary)

Aside from a few lunatics who actually think Cahill will get 45-55% of the votes, I don't think anyone thinks he will be an actual factor. No, he won't get a Joe Kennedy 1%, but he won't get anywhere near enough to win.

No one else is going to step up to defeat Baker in a primary, so anyone trolling saying "there's still time for a "real" conservative to come in" is wrong. There isn't time, and no one is stupid enough to put their name out there now.

The simple math equation I use is this:
Baker > Deval

Play depressing music on your way to the polls, hold your nose and punch the ticket, scream and cry on the way home and drink a nice cold beer that night.

Agree with their politics or not, if you want to get Deval Patrick out of office, the best thing you can do is vote for Baker/Tisei.

SoftBabyPitBull - cries and whines (0.00 / 0)
This man is soft on politics and fails to see the shift in you the Massachusetts voters. On Jan 19th Massachusetts shifted to Center Right and we need to keep the drive alive.

Down be sold down the river from BabyPitBull and his whining and crying liberal ways. He and his liberal friends have been bought and sold by the Baker campaigns in their weak minds and pocket book that he carries around his shoulder.

The Baker campaign has hundreds on the payroll and will be adding many more in the coming weeks. Baker will be able to buy their votes Don't Allow Them to Change Your Values and Convictions on what is right for Massachusetts.

BabyPitBull - has no teeth and will plead with you to follow him as he schils for Baker. Ignore his requests and stay strong. All he wants to do is open the flood gates for more like him.

We have started to rebuild Massachusetts - don't listen to weak man behind the curtain spreading stories and pleading.
He will be the first to laugh and walk away from you. As he all ready has with supporting Baker.

Carpe Diem - change has come to Massacusetts politics, don't go back now!

wait..... (5.00 / 1)
So I'm a liberal now? Because I think the best shot at beating Deval is the Republican candidate? And I have liberal friends? FYI: I'm friends with all of the editors here, who can attest for my conservative views.

Read what I wrote before you just blindly attack the person. I said Baker/Tisei are too left for me, but they are still the best shot at beating Deval. Who do you think is this great very conservative candidate who will beat Deval? I can't wait to meet him/her!

How do you suggest we rebuild Massachusetts? By only supporting very conservative Republicans? While that is an ideal candidate, we aren't in an ideal situation. Good luck getting somewhere in the party by nominating very conservative candidates to state-wide offices. If you want only very conservative Republicans in office, I suggest a one-way ticket to Texas.

Analogy .. (0.00 / 0)
A lot of people could be the best shot at beating Deval.
But that doesnt necesarily make them "OUR" best shot, does it? How exactly do WE "win" anything if the hypothetical Baker beats Deval match is played out? Would you feel like a winner? Outside of demorilizing "the party's" core what would be changed? New names, new faces? And what kind of precident would that set? Endless news cycles spinning "the succesful" GOP model, just run slightly left of the dems?

[ Parent ]
once again.... (5.00 / 1)
What is the alternative? Four more years of Deval? Mihos somehow winning out? Both Deval/Baker being entrenched in a rape/murder scandal, pushing Cahill to the top?

Once again, Baker/Tisei aren't perfect candidates. In fact, they are far, FAR from it...but if the ultimate goal is to get Deval Patrick out of office in 8 months, what are we left with?

Deval (0.00 / 0)
Is driving businesses out of the state - and screwing up the budget. Looks like Mihos can't balance his check book and Cahill is a fake candidate to split the vote and get Deval elected. Baker has experience running a large organization and is a center right candidate. That's your choice vote for it or join or form a new party.

You can't stand your ground nor stand for any true cause.

Roark had one thing going for him - he was a strong individual that stood strong. Your knee's are weak and they caved in with the first sight of money and power. Mr. Roark stood up repeatedly to money and power. You are no Roark my friend!

You are afraid, soft and willing to join a cause for half right reasons. You are not the Massachusetts voter that brings change - just a band wagon wagon jumper.

Charlie, BabyPitBull and the others will use you and then leave you behind as they push for more Social Liberal candidates and agenda.

Carpe diem - as we mourn the lose of another misguided lady.

your words speak for your views - the editors are schilling for Baker as well.

You are a foolish, soft, weak follower. Your writings ask others to follow your ways. In a few short weeks you have lost your way.

The voters of Massachusetts spoke on Jan 19th and you failed to listen. Stop trying to move anyone foolish enough to listen backwards.

You are whining, pleading liberal and what makes it worst you are trying to get other to follow your ways.

I hope Charlie and the editors are paying enough to make up for all the integrity you are losing with the people that read RMG.

No, there isn't (5.00 / 1)
There isn't time or another candidate to step up for LG. There's no point in just throwing someone out there. Anyone who we thought may run is currently:

-A US Senator
-Running for Congress
-Apparently decided she isn't running for LG

Being a candidate does NOT equal being a viable candidate. You keep speaking in these long drawn out obscure posts. FIND ME A CANDIDATE THEN!

Sure, I suppose I can try to convince a City Councilor in a small city to run for LG. And maybe they are lucky enough to raise $20K or something for a primary. Then they lose about 80-20 and look like a fool.

I'm more conservative than Tisei. If you send out a compare/contract list on the issues to every Republican in MA, and didn't include names, I would probably be more favorable than he is.

Does that men I should run for LG....?

Short period of time and no money was the conference calls we were having in November for Scott.

Your mind is closed! Next

Another liberal lady has pasted to the liberal side of Center.

Once again... (5.00 / 1)
Four or 5 people on here know me personally. I'm certainly no liberal.

You refuse to answer my questions though.

-Where is your viable candidate for Governor?
-Where is your viable candidate for LG?

Like I said, on paper and my stances on issue I may be a better candidate than Tisei. Does that make me more viable? No. Being a candidate does not equal being a VIABLE candidate.

If you think someone is just going to run out here, pull papers, get the thousands of signatures and pose an actual threat than arguing with you is insane. There was a reason all these candidates came out to announce their candidacy months and months ago. It takes a year to run for these offices...not 7 months.

Is there any evidence that Gubernatorial candidate Christy Mihos favors a Marriage Referendum for our Commonwealth?
If he does, and others don't, it immediately makes him the strongest candidate.
For that matter, what evidence is there that any of the declared candidates supports a Marriage Referendum ?

Why Baker Tapped Tisei? (0.00 / 0)
Why did you pick Richard Tisei to be your running mate?
Five reasons:

Richard has been the most articulate critic of the Patrick Administration's fiscal policies for the past couple of years. No Republican voted for the state budget in FY 2008 or FY 2009, because none of them believed the spending levels could be sustained. They were right.

He is a lifelong Republican - he cut his political teeth working for Ronald Reagan for President in 1980 - and has a solid voting record as a fiscal conservative and a state government reformer.

He is supported by virtually every non-partisan group in MA that's interested in private sector job creation and job growth.

Richard's a winner. He's been elected 13 times - usually by landslides - in what most experts would describe as a predominantly Democratic district.

He wants to cut state spending, reform state government, and get people back to work. Me too.

Thank you (0.00 / 0)
I don't expect everyone on RMG to agree with me about Charlie Baker, Richard Tisei, or any issue or candidate of the day.

That said, I do expect - from my fellow conservatives & Republicans - a modicum of decorum befitting our party and movement.

It's unfortunate when some, when having no other rhetorical refuge, devolve into hysterical name calling & personal attacks.

If you can articulate better arguments for Christy Mihos or Tim Cahill, so be it.  One of my points this past week has been how the devolution - by supporters of all sides - does nothing but devalue their support for said candidate.

Sure, the Founding Fathers often couldn't agree on a damn thing (Federalist Papers/Anti-Federalist Papers, etc.) but even while rough around the edges at times... at least they have the history of conducting themselves as gentlemen.

Is Baker our best shot? (0.00 / 0)
Clearly, in order to win in this state, you need the folks who read RMG, and all of the other activist that this site carries around in their pockets, like so many nickels and dimes.
I don't trust the narrative that Baker has created for himself. I don't believe he is as great of a "manager" as he would have us believe. I don't believe that he is as conservative as he says he would have us believe. Tisei is a non starter. We all know he is as liberal if not more so then DP.
Rather than have the Baker HQ brain trust log on and try to convince me...why doesn't he just answer the most basic questions that we all seem to have for him. If he continues to dismiss good honest conservatives, like Christie and Tim Cahill, his arrogant campaign is doomed for the same type of failure as a certain US senate candidate.
NO!I will not donate, I will not support, and I will not vote for Baker simply because claims he is a Republican. Not when there are folks like Mihos and Cahill who are far more worthy of my support. Long and short of it, Baker/ Tisei can go fly a kite.

Baker has similar views as Cahill & Mihos (0.00 / 0)
I'm sorry but the flaw in your logic is "good honest conservatives, like Christie and Tim Cahill."

1) It's Christy, not Christie.

2) Christy Mihos has virtually identical issue positions & that's easily ascertained by an quick glance at their stated positions.

3) Tim Cahill is a former Democrat & as they say the leopard can't change his spots.  Just look at the quote I posted previously about Cahill championing Deval Patrick's anti-low tax stances.

4) I won't claim that either Cahill or Mihos is anything less than "good" or "honest" however...

5) Your insinuation by implication that Charlie Baker is somehow less than good or honest is an unjustified low blow.

6) Charlie Baker is as conservative as either Christy Mihos or Tim Cahill

In conclusion, you may not like or support Charlie Baker but don't try to create so much smoke & mirrors while doing it.

Still enjoy my morning coffee (0.00 / 0)
1) My apologies the "Christy", I am still drinking my morning coffee and reading, so again sorry.

2)Christy supports the rollback to 3%, Baker does not. So if by virtually identical issue positions, you mean, different issue positions, then again you are correct.

3)Really? Ronald Reagan was a Democrat too. Are you sure about leopards?

4) I do believe that Baker is less than good...as a matter of fact I would call him mediocre at best. However I don't believe that he is somehow dishonest and I insinuated no such thing. I think that it is intellectually dishonest to not engage in debate with CHRISTY or Cahill. Each brings viable arguments to the table. Each deserves to be heard.

5) It seems to me, by picking Richard Tisei, he is giving the wink and the nod to the ultra libs, and hard-core Democrats that they will have a "home" in his administration if they just let Deval out to dry.

Also, I have been reading your work on here for a long time and have a lot of respect for what you have to say. I respectfully disagree with you and I am going to "shill" for Cahill on here. I think that you should shill for Baker, I like to hear the other sides prospective, and it does the movement and the conservative community on here some good to read it. To answer your question: yes. Unquestionably. (5.00 / 1)
One of the many wonderful things about our system (and this system - the blog I mean) is that everyone is entitled to his own opinion.  By extension, everyone is entitled to rant like a lunatic and toss off lame insults if that makes him feel better.
To your question though: yes, Baker-Tisei absolutely, unquestionably are the best option to beat Patrick, and also to beat the Democrat-in-disguise Cahill and his sulking ex-r sidekick.
Both ends of the political spectrum are plagued by ideological purists.  Maybe they keep the rest of us honest I don't know.  Ultimately it is rare for any of us, anywhere on that spectrum to have a candidate or a ticket who is perfect for us in every way.  McCain was a social conservative but he was also the driving force behind the horrible and unconstitutional McCain Feingold bill.  Many of Deval P's supporters the first time around hated all his talk about lowering property taxes.  The gay rights folk choked back Obama's position on gay marriage.  Social conservatives in MA are not the only ones in the political world who are sometimes obligated to compromise in the interest of electing someone who is eons better on most issues than the alternatives.
I'm not sure where this notion that Charlie B is not a fiscal conservative comes from.  He is.  He just is, to his core.  Spend 10 minutes listening to him talk about those issues and if you aren't convinced then you are determined not to be convinced.  That is what this state needs right now.  A competent, trustworthy social conservative.  There could come a time when what this state needs is a pro-life crusader but that time is not now.  Tim Cahill talks the talk, but only since he decided he wanted to be Governor more than he wanted to be a card-carrying MA democrat.

Why did Baker pick Tisei? (0.00 / 0)
For Charlie Baker, picking Richard Tisei made a lot of sense.  After all, Tisei was only 22 years old when in 1984 he became the youngest Republican elected to the stat legislature.  Having served 3 terms, Tisei was elected to the Senate in 1991 in a heavily Democratic district.  Since then Richard Tisei has been re-elected to 10 consecutive terms.  Not bad for someone who is only 47.

Not only did Baker know Tisei back when Baker worked for Republican Gov. Bill Weld, Baker understood that Tisei has a deep connection with the Legislature that Baker would need in order to govern effectively.

One of the main reasons Weld, also a stranger to the Statehouse, was so successful as governor in dealing with the Democratic Legislature, was that he had Paul Cellucci as his lieutenant governor. Cellucci, who succeeded Weld as governor, was a state senator when Weld picked him as his running mate. Cellucci knew how the Legislature operated. They became an effective team.

"The Weld-Cellucci model for governing is the best model we have," Tisei said. "That's our model." Tisei acknowledged that Patrick would be tough to beat in November with state Treasurer Timothy Cahill, a former Democrat running as an unenrolled (Independent) candidate, thereby making it a three-way fight. Cahill chose former Republican state Rep. Paul Loscocco of Holliston as his running mate.

Tisei predicted that Cahill will not have the staying power to make it to the November ballot, but even if he does, Baker/Tisei will prevail, not only over Cahill/Loscocco but over Patrick/Murray as well.

http://www.sentinelandenterpri...

Fantasy Land (0.00 / 0)
Baker HQ knows that it's only path to victory is to pretend Cahill is not in this race and unfortunately the election in November is taking place here in Massachusetts, not in Fantasy Land.

While Fantasy Land would be a great political backdrop for Baker/Tisei to sail to victory, the harsh reality of this election is that they have no chance of winning in November with Cahill/Loscocco on the ballot and indeed it is Cahill/Loscocco that I firmly believe will win the election in November.

Baker HQ strategy is quite obviously:  "ignore Cahill (see Coakleyesque WBZ reporter blow off), treat him like a third party candidate, pretend he has no money, and hope he goes away."  Sounds like a perfect formula for losing another election by his Baker's consultants who have plenty of experience at that...

Let's look at the facts -- many of which were in the last two polls on the race (Globe & Suffolk, see cites below)

The Boston Globe poll revealed that 63% of Massachusetts voters are "very" or "somewhat" likely to vote for an independent candidate for Governor (Globe, 7/26/09).

As a current statewide office holder and winner of TWO statewide elections, Cahill is not your average "Independent". Tim Cahill's name recognition stands at 85% of Massachusetts voters. Further, Cahill is viewed favorably by the voters, maintaining a nearly 2:1 favorable to unfavorable rating among voters expressing an opinion (Suffolk, 1/14/10). The most recent Boston Globe poll broke down Cahill's favorable numbers from Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, finding that Cahill had net favorables from each group (Globe, 1/11/10).

In the Jan 11 Globe Poll the overall numbers (Patrick 30; Cahill 23; Baker 19) were not nearly as interesting as the underlying numbers:

Among Independents:  Cahill 26%, Patrick 20%, Baker 16% -- Cahill is best positioned to capture Democratic leaning independents leaving Patrick down the stretch as it is an easier move to go from Patrick to the Independent candidate than the Republican candidate.

Among Republicans:  Cahill garnered 25% AND those poll results were taken before Cahill picked a conservative Republican, Paul Loscocco, as his running mate!  For 25% of Republicans to be with Cahill, while a full 97% of Republicans were with Scott Brown, speaks volumes about why Baker will not be winning this election.

Cahill, and now Cahill/Loscocco, will pull too many Independent and Republican votes from critical areas of the state -- most notably South Shore and Metrowest -- for Baker to have a chance to win the election.  Not to mention Loscocco will also be a draw on the social right vote further damaging any hope Baker may have.

The fact is that Baker can't win this election with Cahill in the race.  Based on Charlie's Coakley-like "refusal" to answer a question about Cahill at his announcement when asked by WBZ, Charlie has probably figured that out and his big fund-raisers and donors eventually will as well....I can't WAIT to see Charlie's expenditures for January, because I can promise you, he is in serious danger of spending nearly as money in January than he took in.  So much for "shattering records."  And if you think Scott Brown had anything to do with his bad January numbers, just wait for February.  The million dollar December is already ancient history.

Charlie's fundraising will continue to decline as he is discredited as a viable winning candidate and money starts flowing into many other Republican campaigns we will see in 2010.

And since the only part of Charlie's campaign that is remotely interesting is fundraising, once that is gone, he will be too.

Baker NEEDS to raise big money because he has no statewide name ID and he is going to have to pay to build it w/o a statewide office to generate regular free media from.  Baker also has no political background and is "buying" his campaign staff whereas Cahill has twenty years worth of campaign volunteers that keep his costs down.  And as SSR notes, Cahill has 2.5x cash on hand what Baker does -- and he has been regularly raising a few hundred thousand a month.

Look at all the money Charlie has raised.  Where did it go while his campaign has gone backwards?  We'll find out in a couple days.

With Charlie marginalized before the leaves fall off the trees in my back yard, it will be Cahill and the Governor down the stretch run and anyone who wants to get rid of Patrick will see that, and in the end, vote for Tim.

It really is time to send a message to the Republican Party that we are not interested in electing a ticket that is indistinguishable from any Democrat ticket I've ever worked against.

Draft Anew Lt.Gov.

We need signs and volunteers for Baker events. RMG is passing on giving any help since they are all schills for Baker on his payroll.

Your simple equation (0.00 / 0)
We are not 'trying to get Deval Patrick out of office'.  We are trying to do what's best for the state.  If Richard Tisei is in the corner office, then that is worse than what we have now. Period.

Read our posts: I think many of us would rather have Tim Murray, a moderate; or Loscocco, a center-right, as LG and it is important it does matter.

If LG didn't matter that much to the ultimate goal, then why have Charlie so desperate to run with him despite the flak?

Here's an equation:

Money & media = conservatism down the toilet.

Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.

Questions westernmagop refuses to answer: (5.00 / 1)
Q- Who is your magical viable candidate to challenge Baker and Tisei?
My answer: There isn't one. In a perfect world on of the rumored candidate would've run, but they aren't Sure, you can try to cry and moan, submit papers etc to get someone to do it. Nothing will happen. Sure, have 4 guys hold signs at Baker's event when there will be 800-1200 Baker/Tisei supporters. I'm sure that'll do a lot.

Q- Why do you think the editors are in Baker/Tisei's camp?
My answer: The editors have been very forward in their dislike/hatred of Tisei and this ticket. If you can't see that, then you can't read above a 2nd grade level. Also, as someone who has personally spent hours and hours hanging out with many of the editors here I can say without question....they dislike Tisei.

But I suppose you have a diggerent opinion and of course a rationale reasoning for this....

Q- What are you going to do to find this mythetical candidate and bring him/her forward and make him/her successful?
My answer: You are going to do nothing. You are going to sit here and repeat the same "draft anew LG" post that you have ready to fire off your clipboard with a click of a mouse.

Meanwhile, even though in your mind I'm a liberal:
-I'm an elected official who won with a very conservative message
-I was helping out Scott's campaign in OCTOBER when no one knew or cared who the hell he was
I'm heavily involved in local politics, statewide politics, and I'm running a rep seat (for a Republican, of course) that i currently held by a Dem but is THE seat that Beacon Hill is expecting to change colors.

In other words, while you type from the comfort of your parents living room, I've won elections as a Republican, I've volunteered for OTHER republicans to help them win, and I'm working to get another Republican to make him a State Rep.

You claim me to be a liberal, when even though I'm 26 I've probably done more for the party than you have.

Again with the straw man argument - BabyBull you are such a cry baby. In October/November there only 4 guys with Scott, read below your own words. Sidebar - if you were one and I was one we have met...

Then stand up and rally the voices of all the people on this blog and join the "Draft Anew Lt. Gov" be apart of the movement. Otherwise the masses will follow the Center Right candidate which could be Cahill, are you following?

Once we raise our voices and rally at Baker events - the prefect candidate will step forward. It appears that a few races are stacked with Republicans that could run as Lt.Gov. Your not a leader you are a follower, jumping on and off the band wagons.

Why do we see so many Republican stepping forward now - cuz Scott won and they are following the trends. You got it BabyBull! The trend we are starting is Draft Anew! Politicians are followers and a good Lt Gov is a good follower.
