Tim Cahill Fiscal Conservative?

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Fri Feb 05, 2010 at 08:18:27 AM EST

There has been a lot of talk on Red Mass Group over the past week about whether or not Tim Cahill is a viable conservative alternative, or is he the same Democratic hack he was in 2006?

According to State House News Service, Cahill told the AFL-CIO breakfast the following yesterday.

Charging Gov. Deval Patrick with scapegoating public employees, Treasurer Timothy Cahill told labor unions Thursday he would defend the state's public pension system from proposals to scale back benefits for current workers and said Patrick and Republican gubernatorial candidate Charles Baker were hunting for headlines with their pension reform plans. "I think the governor and Baker are just looking for some cheap headlines, and they're getting them," Cahill told reporters after addressing the state AFL-CIO annual conference in Plymouth."

Tim Cahill is defending run away pension abuse. That doesn't seem like a strong fiscally conservative position. That seems like a hack opinion.

Charlie Baker had the following to say about Cahill's position, "By defending our broken and out-of-control pension system, Tim Cahill revealed his true stripes as an out-of-touch Beacon Hill insider who places special interests before the interests of taxpayers.  Defending a bloated pension system that rewards political insiders sends a clear message to voters that Tim Cahill believes there are two different standards - one for the well-connected, and another for everybody else.  My pension reform plan will reform the pension system, end abuse, and make it fair to the taxpayers and to pensioners.  Let's put an outsider in charge of Beacon Hill"

Cahill Candidacy Doomed! (0.00 / 0)
Incumbent Democrat (OK, he switched 15 minutes ago) desperately searching for a political coalition.  Anemic fundraising numbers, but has enough cash on hand to keep the lights on through the summer.  Upside: no formal charges yet on corruption investigation.  Do you think Shannon O'Brien will hire him at the Girl Scouts after he gets pounded in the Fall?

Funds not in bad shape. (0.00 / 0)
I'm not voting for Cahill, but his cash position is actually pretty solid.  2009 year end reports:

Cahill: $3,210,625.23
Baker: $1,462,797.79
Patrick: $634,641.67
Mihos: $2,668.84

Cahill raised $689,656.46 last year.  While that's not as impressive as Baker, it's hardly "anemic."  With his low burn rate he actually net more cash than Deval.  I think he'll have more than "enough cash on hand to keep the lights on through the summer."  I don't thik Cahill will win, but I wouldn't underestimate his potential impact on this election.

Cahill's Prospects (0.00 / 0)

I read Cahill's low burn rate for funds at this stage as evidence that he's not really started.  From the looks of his disclosures, he's doing 2 maybe 3 big events a month.  That may be evidence of a lack of popular interest in his candidacy.

As for EaBo's posting, I was frankly quite shocked at Cahill's statement.  If there were any area of government that needs reform, its pensions.  This is a primary area of purview of the treasurer.  Essentially he is saying that there are no opportunities for savings in the area that he knows best.  Well if he can't find opportunities for savings in the areas og government he is familiar with, why should we expect that he will find areas for spending cuts in other parts of the government?  There is no reason to believe that.

I am not Cahill supporter but even if one is not a supporter, stuff like this tends to make me into a bigger detractor than I otherwise would have been.  One of the great things about the internet is that now one not only can vote for someone else, you can criticize in real time as well.

I wonder how much of that $689K in Reciepts... (0.00 / 0)
...is interest on the $2.85 Million he started 2009 with.

I mean, my credit Union offers about 2% APY on a CD.  That would be about $57,000 in interest.

Could the Treasurer of the Commonwealth get a better interest rate?

$57,000 alone is about 9-10% of all the money he raised.

Food for thought.

Ah, didn't see that. (0.00 / 0)
That is interesting.  1 out of ever 14 dollars he took in was from interest.

This makes me doubt his viability even more.  Barring some implosion by one of the other candidates, this isn't good for Cahill.

For the sake of argument, let's say he raised 3x the money in 2010 that he took in in 2009 (I don't think he will, but go with me on this).

Will $3.2 Million plus another $2 Million be enough?  I have my doubts.  Both Kerry Heally and Mitt Romeny, spent upwards to $12 Million to win (or lose) their races for Governor.

Both of those as Major Party Candidates.  The more I see of this race, the more I think it is Charlie Baker's to Lose.  Deval is pretty much toast.  Jill Stein will be a 2% candidate, and Cahill won't beat Miho's 7%.  That leaves Charlie Baker with a lot of room to put together a Winning Coalition for November.

All the more reason why it is important who his Lt. Gov. (and heir apparent) is.

And who exactly.... (0.00 / 0)
...is this "outsider" he is speaking of? It ain't Charlie. First, Baker is telling us he knows state government and he's telling us all about working for Weld in the administration and finance office. Now he's trying to get us to buy the idea that he's an "outsider?" If you want outsider, talk to Grace Ross. Or Jill Stein. Or EaBo Clipper. (And I mean that nicely, EaBo. I'd rather have you in the corner office than Baker. For real.)

He was asked this question on Nightside with Dan Rea (1030 AM) shortly after the election.  He refused to answer the question... although he seemed to make some kind of choking sound when asked if he voted for fellow independent Joe Kennedy. ;)

This particular interview doesn't seem to be available online.

Neither is Tisei (5.00 / 1)
And that's a huge problem. Baker has great campaign issues in pension reform and rolling back the sales tax increase as well as ending the double taxation on alcohol. Having Tisei on the ticket undercuts that message. The sad truth is that Tisei's politcs, anti-rollback(2000) and bathroom bill fit more naturally on the Democratic ticket.

I'm sure Tisei is a nice guy and having him in the Senate is beneficial to the party. He just shouldn't be our nominee for LG. The Globe et al. will make hay of Tisei's position on the rollback. It will be voo-doo economics redux every time Baker mentions taxes.

With all the financial issues Mihos seems to have, I don't believe he is the most convincing candidate to run on fixing Beacon Hill. Running against Healy in the general instead of challenging her in the primary in 2006 is a problem for me as well.

It seems to me that those on this site who have pledged to support Cahill will be unhappy with the results. The most likely is that splitting the disaffected vote allows Governor Patrick to win re-election. In the unlikely scenario where Cahill wins, I think he will govern as a Democrat. As a white male he could never realistically challenge Governor Patrick in a primary, the optics are just terrible. The only reason he switched to independent is because it gives him his best shot of becoming Governor, he hasn't suddenly seen the light. Don't end up being like those conservatives that voted for Obama and then said oops, he isn't what I thought he was.

Cahill isn't the solution. I hope the solution is finding a fiscal conservative as the republican nominee for LG. That being said, a republican ticket, even with Tisei on it, is better than another four years of Patrick/Murray.

Sorry for the length of this comment.

Cahill no longer viable candidate (0.00 / 0)
He is toast - he just killed his only legit campaign issue.

Cahill is a Political Corpse (0.00 / 0)
His loyalists in Quincy know he can't win and are praying he drops out so they can throw their support behind a viable candidate.  And the money he does have in the bank took him SEVEN years to raise.  When those funds get spent, ain't no other money coming in the door.  He is DOA!!

To answer the question in your subject line (0.00 / 0)
No.
Duh.
Kind of hilarious that as hard as he is trying to cast himself as an FC he could not resist the impulse to go to the unions and bow down.  Defending public employees against political attack?  Okay.  Defending our current public pensions system?  Good God.  Wonder if Paul what's-his-name's friends and family are scheduling an intervention yet.

Speaking of Pensions Cahill voted to double supporter's pensio (0.00 / 0)

SEIU, tear down these pensions. (0.00 / 0)
I see this as very pointless. At least I give Cahill credit for admitting he needs some union help in November. So he's not a fiscal conservative. Be still my heart. Who is? The only other candidate who can at least pretend to be fiscally conservative with a straight face is Mihos.

And come on people, does anyone think Choo Choo CHarlie's gonna stand up to the unions? The guy is an empty suit.

Everyone's a liberal until they get their first paycheck.

Charlie Baker outsider? (0.00 / 0)
As some editors on this website love to say "sorry, that dog just don't hunt."

Richard Tisei has been in office since Jesus was in short pants. For crying out loud, the golden dome was like his effing daycare while his mommy and daddy where at work.

Charlie, your game is weak. It's laughable that you call your self an outside, you designed the Big Dig financing scheme! You Charlie! You did that! We know why you didn't run all those years ago. You claimed that it was your wife who wouldn't let  you. The reality is that the PEOPLE WOULD HAVE HELD YOU RESPONSIBLE...JUST LIKE THEY ARE NOW. Our bridges have fallen into disrepair because of you. 6 where considered "structurally deficient" because of you. Would anyone like to venture a guess when we will not be leveraged out to our bond holders...2038. Thanks big guy, thanks a lot for your service to the commonwealth. Big help!

If I could not go to Heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all. -Jefferson

Think about this (0.00 / 0)
You're sharing a primary talking point with Tim Murray, Gov. Patrick's attack dog.  Think about that the next time someone points out that by shilling for Cahill (a Dem) you're helping to re-elect a hopelessly ineffective Dem (Patrick).  It isn't a matter of interpretation - you're actually, literally making their arguments for them.
Good job.

Baker's Mouthful (1.00 / 1)
Charlie doesn't talk like a regular guy.    Look at how many words are in this single sentence that is attributed to ole Charlie Baker:

By defending our broken and out-of-control pension system, Tim Cahill revealed his true stripes as an out-of-touch Beacon Hill insider who places special interests before the interests of taxpayers.

Geesh!   Why can't Charlie speak regular English like the rest of us?
