Transparency at Risk!

by: kjkuros

Sun Feb 07, 2010 at 23:44:34 PM EST

( - promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno)

While we all still feel a little like kids on Christmas morning after Scott Brown (R-MA)'s swearing in, we have a very serious issue confronting us that we need to stay focused on.

Namely, our state legislature is at risk of becoming even less transparent than it already is.

Right now, only 16 out of 160 State Reps are Republicans.  Exactly the 10% needed to force a roll call vote based on House rules.  As it is, we need everyone to be in attendance and not tied up in meetings, hearings, etc. when votes occur, just to force a roll call.

Here's where things get scary.

If NO new Republicans are elected to State Rep seats, we are in some serious trouble.

Bob Hargraves has already announced his retirement.  So we've got 15 seats.

Lew Evangelidis is running for Worcester County Sheriff.  Make that 14 seats.

Richard Ross is running for the seat vacated by Scott Brown.  Make that 13 seats.

Jeff Perry is running for Congress. Now we're looking at 12 seats.

Karyn Polito may be considering a run for higher office as well, bringing us down to 11 seats.

And I may have missed someone else, but even if I didn't, we've got some serious challenges ahead of us.  (More below...)

kjkuros :: Transparency at Risk!
First, it's important to note that I'm fully supportive of each of the sitting Representatives taking a shot at higher office. There are many very good reasons for each of them to do so, not the least of which is the opportunity that stands before them along with the belief by some if not all of them that State Representative is not their career work.

But it certainly raises the importance of working as hard as humanly possible to get candidates like me, Kurt Hayes, Ryan Fattman, Steven Levy and many others elected to back-fill for the seats we already know we're losing an incumbent in. (I'm not slighting any of the other 2010 candidates... a fairly complete list is available at http://www.masshousegop.com/ca...

We've just got to be incredibly focused as a group of GOP activists to:

1) Not let up because we think things suddenly got easier as a result of Scott Brown's win.

2) Throw everything including the kitchen sink at winning 15-20 or more new seats this November.

3) Continuously remind the state party that the corner office without the ability to sustain a veto or (God forbid!) even force a roll call vote will face many challenges.

4) Reach out to people outside our collective comfort zones who may not have supported Republicans in the past, but who may do so this year in what should be a very strong anti-incumbent year.

This is too important not to give it our 100% effort. Get motivated, get fired up, and most importantly get ready to work!

Legislature voted to DENY PUBLIC ACCESS to committee voting records.

This is as serious as it get, folks.  Votes are taken at night, past 9pm when access to State House chambers are restricted.

If we are EVER going to be get on the path of returning true democracy to the Commonwealth, 2010 is the time!

Please contribute to as many candidates for the legislature as you can... Any amount will help.

There is a "Donate" button on my website: http://www.geoffdiehl.com.

I have a winnable race (my district, combined, went 69%/31% Brown/Coakley) and your contributions will help me get the message out beyond our local MSM.

You will never see "campaign lunches" or "travel to/from point X to point Y" on my OCPF reports.  I have my lawn signs, I have my website - Every dollar I spend from here on out is for mailings and ads, or to fund an event to raise more money for mailings and ads.

The 2010 elections are really up to you... What are YOU willing to do?

Great points Geoff (0.00 / 0)
Like Geoff's, the 5 towns of my district went overwhelmingly for Scott Brown - ranging from a low of 66/33 in Webster to a high of 74/26 in Douglas.  I just need the support to consistently get our message out.  The special interests will be lining up behind my opponent Paul Kujawski.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the Fall River GOP's annual Lincoln Day breakfast and much of what you raise was touched upon, especially by MassGOP Chairman Jennifer Nassour.

Jenn spoke at length about the need to support the party with continued activism by all those in the room (my guess is at least 150) and our town & city committees.  Scott Brown wasn't the end but the beginning.  I wasn't taking notes but in general Jenn's message & tone was right on par with what you are advocating.  Singled out where the several legislative candidates in the room (David Rose for David Sullivan's seat, CJ Ferry for Kevin Aguiar's seat, etc).

Also speaking at various lengths to this were:

Jacob Ventura, Executive Director of the Mass Federation of Young Republicans (who also included a great call to "expand the big tent" to include those often overlooked minority demographics with which we must build close bonds).

Bristol County Sheriff Tom Hodgson who provided us with a rather solemn speech discussing Abraham Lincoln & linking his principles and example to our party, today.

Sen. Richard Tisei gave a biographical sketch of himself, experience, and the Baker/Tisei ticket.  He was very well received.  Tisei specifically noted the need to elect legislative candidates as there can only be so much success in the Corner Office without friends in the legislature.

In attendance was also Marty Lamb, GOP candidate in the 3rd Congressional race (which includes part of Fall River) and Earl Sholley, GOP candidate in the 4th Congressional district (who also conducted a stand out on the rotary).

New Bedford GOP Chairman, former Governor's Council candidate, and owner of the historic Shawmut Diner - Phil Paleologos - was the emcee.

The food was good but the talk was better.  Importantly, most of the talk wasn't about celebrating our recent past but urging preparation & activism for the near & long term future!

Here's looking forward to next year's event already!  Thanks to State Committeeman David Rose, Fall River GOP Chairman Jeff Hopkins, and all the crew who put on yesterday morning's event!

Richard Ross was always there......for DiMasi (0.00 / 0)
The seat which has always been vacant with Ross in it wil be filled by a very qualified Dan Winslow. We'll finally have an occupant in it since Scott left years ago.

What about the Senate? (0.00 / 0)
Out of 40, there were 5 R's..

Scott Brown out, now 4.

Richard Tisei for LG, down to 3.

What if Hedlund runs for Congress...yipes.

I'll make a pitch to support my candidacy. Please conribute anything you can. Thanks!

Just a TINY fact check. (0.00 / 0)
We faced this in the 2005-06 Session.  The number needed for a roll call HAD been twenty.

DiMasi lowered it to 'ten percent of legislators' - i.e., sixteen.  Pledges and promises were made to accomplish this - none of them benefitting the GOP.

BUT - truth is, the rule could be changed again.  The number/percentage needed is adopted at the beginning of every Session when the Legislature adopts new Rules for the forthcoming Session.

Not to say we shouldn't win seats, but don't overstate either.

Carry on.

Yr. Obedient Servant, Peter Porcupine, Republican

Technically Correct (0.00 / 0)
In the Senate as well as the House they have consistently lowered the threshold for a roll call vote as GOP representation has diminished. However, there's no guarantee it will continue.

I say let's not risk it and add members in bunches to both chambers :)

Candidates ready (0.00 / 0)
Bob Hargraves told me there's a good candidate planning to run for his seat. I think Dan Winslow will run for Richard Ross' seat as he runs for Brown's senate seat. One of Bob Hedlund's former primary opponents may run for his seat if he runs for Congress. The CLT 2 1/2 PAC has more candidates running than usual, had endorsed 13 challengers for the House and two for the Senate by the end of '09, still collecting.

PS We need Pledge signers (5.00 / 1)
Please tell any pro-taxpayer candidates you are supporting that unless they are incumbents with a rating, they must sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and fill out a CLT PAC questionnaire in order for us to consider support. Sometimes candidates lose these forms in their mailboxes.

Formerly belonging to Mary Rogeness (R- Longmeadow) was lsot in a close race in 2008 to Brian Ashe ( D-Longmeadow). This year we have a strong candidate in the form of Jack Villamaino (R-East Longmeadow) who is currently a selectmen and former aide to former state sen. brian lees. This seat will come back to us!
