Martha Coakley Formally Announces Reelection Bid

by: Garrett Quinn

Tue Feb 09, 2010 at 19:54:02 PM EST

Massachusetts Attorney General and former US Senate candidate Martha Coakley has formally announced that she is running for reelection. After her failed bid for the US Senate her staffers mentioned that she was planning on seeking reelection but no formal announcement was made until tonight in an email to supporters. It appears that her campaign retrofitted her US Senate website for a run for AG. She is including press releases from the AG's office on part of her campaign website.

The Republican Party does not have a declared candidate for the race. Former US Attorney Michael Sullivan, who was thought by many as potential candidate, has declared he is not running.

There are some grumblings about a potential Tim Cruz candidacy. Cruz is the District Attorney for Plymouth County.

Martha Coakley has $93,259.67 on hand in her state campaign account, not including her savings balance of 546,738. She ended 2009 with $638,811 on hand.

Tim Cruz has $103,960.14 on hand in his state campaign account, not including his $175,374.65 savings account balance. He ended 2009 with $271,369.91 on hand including his savings account balance.

Garrett Quinn :: Martha Coakley Formally Announces Reelection Bid
Dear Friends,

You have been such a loyal friend and supporter, and I wanted you to be the first to know that today I took out nomination papers to seek re-election as your Attorney General.

There is no question that the families I have met across this Commonwealth are struggling right now. There is an incredible sense of insecurity and uncertainty in so many people's daily lives.

Now more than ever, people need and expect their government to be working effectively for them. And they should accept nothing less.

That is why I am running for Attorney General. I understand the important work this office does in standing up for people and getting things done that matter in their lives. I want to continue to lead those fights on your behalf.

We will continue to stand up for taxpayers and hold the companies who caused this economic collapse accountable. We will challenge utility and health care companies to keep costs down for families and businesses. And we will continue the important work of protecting our children from the new and growing threats to their safety.

We will work every day dedicated to meeting these challenges and more, and I am energized by the opportunities to continue that important work on your behalf.

Thank you again for all that you have done and I am asking for your support in this race. I look forward to seeing you out on the campaign trail.

Peter Flaherty is rumored to be considering a run for AG but I have less reliable sources on that.

Primary for her? (0.00 / 0)
She can't have so much goodwill built up that she won't have primary, can she?

Marc

Tim Cruz (0.00 / 0)
He is an articulate, thoughtful District Attorney and conservative voice in Plymouth County. However I don't think it's on his radar this election. Feel free to encourage him. I truly believe he could beat Martha But he would need to start right away.

She's Toast (0.00 / 0)
Democrats blame her for running a lousy campaign and losing the Senate seat.

She may be in campaign finance trouble (0.00 / 0)
Seems damn near impossible to spend $450,000 on an AG race that she wasn't even in until today, between 12/31/09 and 2/9/10.

Unless of course she was using some of her state funds to run for federal office.

Hmmmmm...

didn't (0.00 / 0)
She already get a slap from the FEC for using state funds and resources for federal election purposes?

She'd get more than a slap. (0.00 / 0)
That would be an egregious violation, easily discoverable, and early.

or maybe not (0.00 / 0)
Where are you getting that $450,000?
Martha Coakley has $93,259.67 on hand in her state campaign account, not including her savings balance of $546,738, for a total of $639,997.67.  She ended 2009 with $638,811 on hand.

I think I misinterpreted the numbers... (0.00 / 0)
I read the following... "Martha Coakley has $93,259.67 on hand in her state campaign account, not including her savings balance of 546,738. She ended 2009 with $638,811 on hand."

... as having $93K on hand now vs. $547K in savings at the end of '09.

Interesting (4.00 / 1)
It would be my first hope that one of the many good Democratic DA's we have would challenge her in a primary. I have a ton of respect for my own DA Gerry Leone who went to great efforts to clean up the mess both of his predecessors left that office (literally and figuratively). Unlike Coakley, he has been willing not only to take on corrupt figures within his own party but within his own building (Buonomo). He has solid law and order credentials but is also against the death penalty and favors trying defendants with full due process and not playing any tricks like Coakley did.

Also he has name recognition in the states most populous county and could be competitive. He ain't running though.
It seems like the Norfolk and Bristol County DAs are also running for re-election now. Baddour is also out, the only Democrat I could see getting people on this site excited.

If Cruz runs good for him. I think Coakley's past record as DA and her record as AG went largely unchallenged by Frisoli during his run. I voted for Coakley in the past as AG but the taint of this Senate election which has revealed how much of a terrible candidate and terrible AG and DA she was is too strong for me to vote for her again. She needs to be challenged and this is a seat your party would be foolish not to contest (and Galvin's quite frankly).

I would (0.00 / 0)
take Leone any day of the week over Coakley.  Even though his political affiliation is different from mine he is showing that his is willing to take on stuff others turn a blind eye to.  Maybe it's his demeanor, but when I hear him saying his office is looking into something, I believe him.  When I hear from Coakley not so much.

Leone Has A Lot Of Respect (0.00 / 0)
From people in and around law enforcement in Middlesex County.

He is a no  nonsense DA that is aggressive and tough on criminals and will fight for even the difficult cases, those with political consequences, unlike his two predecessors.

While he shares a different party affiliation than me, I would be inclined to vote for him over Martha any day.

I hope he runs as he would bring a breath of fresh air to the office and would not be afraid to tackle issues on Beacon Hill unlike others who have held the AG office.

Scarlet "L" (0.00 / 0)
I thought she would be exiled and forced to wear a scarlet "L".
