White Death Falling From The Sky Open Thread

by: Garrett Quinn

Wed Feb 10, 2010 at 09:58:47 AM EST

AH!!!! We're all gonna die! Less than a foot of snow is going to fall on our beloved Commonwealth!

Worth noting that Somerville sent out a snow emergency with a major error in the subject line. They spelled declared as "delcared" in what one can only guess was a hurried rush out the door to stock up on canned goods and powdered milk.

While it's a blow to my ego to be determined to be non-essential I'll take the opportunity to get home early. Deval's reelection campaign has begun!

I have long thought that there's nobody more non-essential than me! (0.00 / 0)

I do not like emergencies. They are very stressful.

Have to be careful, last emergency we ended up with a new Senator.

Wonder if Deval has his sweater on in the Bunker on Rt 9 yet?  Ah well as long is there is expensive electricity and wifi I'm good for at least a week.

Hide the children...snow!!!!  Raise the French Toast Alert level.  @mattnoyes latest forecast for those living outside of the land o the "eternal parking spot hunt" in the SE part of the state is upwards of 16 inches.  At least they had they good sense to cancel school last night instead of their usual bring the kids in and then have to send them home at 11:00.  Been snowing lightly since about 8:00 AM and still the grass is showing and the roads are bare.

There clearly is some mistake......There is no snow with global warming....silly. (0.00 / 0)
Snow is a thing of the past ever since Global warming came about.

At least we have the new government climate change agency and website to keep us up to date on the horrors of too much snow and too little snow.  Climate.gov will automatically do the fear mongering for the lazy bureaucrats that can no longer be bothered to handle the daily routine of getting people to scream and cry about the weather.

All I know is that this too will be an epidemic somehow.  Move over fat kids, make room for another epidemic.

OMGZ! (0.00 / 0)
Because it is snowing and cold in February that must mean that global warming is a farce!..AMIRITE?

There is another mistake as well Garrett........ (0.00 / 0)
2nd line down - 'December 10th'.

They apparently are so stupid in Somerville that they don't even know its freakin February......They think its still December.........

What a Fiasco! Snow Fail! (5.00 / 1)
Here we have snow emergencies and school cancellations called yesterday for today and there has been no serious accumulation as of 6:15 pm!  Here's what we did have:

1) Loss of valuable education and classroom time a few days before the February school vacations for those schools who canceled today.  If we have snow tonight and they cancel tomorrow we will essentially have lost almost two week of instructional time between this week and the vacation week.  While not an educator I cannot think that this is good for the progress of the students.

2) The loss of work earnings, etc. for those parents who had to reschedule for school closing for the non-snow snow day.

3) Did anyone notice any decline in government without the non-essential personnel?  Would like to see this extended to one day a week for the entire year.  Would help put a dent in the budget shortfall if unpaid.

4) Saw a lot of advanced salting and sanding going on in Cambridge and Somerville as early as 10:00 am today.  How much did this really do to "protect" us from the snow versus run up bills to the towns and cities in terms of overtime and sand / salt useage?

5) How many cars were ticketed and towed due to the snow emergency parking ban that went into effect at various times across the region.  Cambridge had a ban that went into effect at noon and was lifted at 5:30 pm - without a single flake of snow being plowed.  Do the people who got ticketed and towed get their money back?

Finally, have we all gone soft.  I don't remember this happening when I was growing up.  Snow days meant that there was actual snow on the ground, not anticipated.

Got out of work at 1:30. (0.00 / 0)
Was in Boston.  The temperature was nice.

Did some book browsing at Borders.  Got a few things at CVS.  Was thinking about catching a movie at the Boston Common theater, but went home instead.  Wish I saw a movie.

Wow major (0.00 / 0)
forecast failure....Matt Noyes even issued an apology...he was only about 12 hours and 12 inches off.

Snowing like the devil outside now...should be fun to go back tomorrow when I actually do have to go in.  On the bright side DC is closed again tomorrow...we can think of it as the Reagan commemorative vacation.

At least in my case...had the same discussion with a co-worker recently.

During my school days 1 and 2 hour delays were common, days off were rare and I don't ever recall an early dismissal.

Yes we were the poor saps glued to radio listening to "Salty" call off all the surrounding towns except for ours (that and of course to hear him say "No school Foster/Glouster").

The only memorable exception was the storm to end all storms....which few remember because it was about 2 weeks before the blizzard of 78.

Not In Cambridge (0.00 / 0)
They have determined that the tickets stand.  The snow emergency was declared and people had to move their cars.  Those that didn't got a ticket.  They will refund towing but not tickets.

Actually agree with the approach and here's why.  If you did the right thing and moved your car and parked in a garage you would end up paying a garage fee.  Now your neighbor doesn't move their car, in essence being irresponsible, and gets a ticket.  Waiving the ticket rewards the irresponsible behavior of not moving your car while the people who did the right thing have the additional cost of the garage while the irresponsible people paid nothing.

While the snow did not come, the emergencies were declared and I think the fines should stand but not the towing.  The only other option would be to reimburse people who did the right thing and parked in garages too which would be opening a large can of worms.

Let's focus on rewarding the responsible behavior not the irresponsible behavior.

What's (0.00 / 0)
to stop them from randomly declaring snow emergencies for no other reason than to generate $$$$$....on OTHER days that it doesn't snow??

Glad I moved from Cambridge last year...
