Scott Brown Honeymoon Over?

by: Garrett Quinn

Mon Feb 22, 2010 at 17:52:19 PM EST

(Update: GOPers Brown, Snowe, Collins, Voinovich & Bond voted with Dems for cloture. Democrat Sen. Ben Nelson of HCR fame voted no. - promoted by Garrett Quinn)

Is the conservative Honeymoon over for Scott "Mr. 41" Brown?

Harry Reid has been courting Brown for that crucial 60th vote to end debate and Brown is now reportedly voting in favor of cloture for the $15 billion jobs bill. With only a simple majority required to pass the bill a vote for cloture is considered a vote in favor of the bill by conservative groups who grade legislators like the Center for Fiscal Accountability. CFA, a wing of Americans for Tax Reform, is calling the bill a "handout" for labor unions.

The Alliance for Worker Freedom says the bill will "add $17 billion to the last 'stimulus bill'" and force union workers on all federally funded highway projects.

Tomorrow we will answer the most important question: How will this impact the sale of his action figure, trucks, and Carhart jackets?

Brown's statement is below the fold.

Garrett Quinn :: Scott Brown Honeymoon Over?
I came to Washington to be an independent voice, to put politics aside, and to do everything in my power to help create jobs for Massachusetts families. This Senate jobs bill is not perfect. I wish the tax cuts were deeper and broader, but I will vote for it because it contains measures that will help put people back to work.

I was disappointed with the continuation of politics-as-usual in the drafting of this bill, as it was crafted behind closed doors, without transparency and accountability. I hope for improvements in that process going forward. All of us, Republicans and Democrats, have to work together to get our economy back on track. I hope my vote today is a strong step toward restoring bipartisanship in Washington.

You're not the only one who's disappointed, Scott (0.00 / 0)
Good luck with that hopey-changey thing "for improvements in the process going forward".

RINO (0.00 / 0)
Lets not let this happen with the GOV race. Lets put the most Conservitive canidate in please. No more RINOs

Irrelevant to other races (5.00 / 1)
This has nothing to do with conservative vs. RINO.  It's about personality-- I think Scott Brown bought into his created image of an independent politician who will transcend those nasty partisan politics; then, bought into the image created by overenthusiastic supporters as THE (Republican) ONE who could be president.

Remember that he is a politician, not a private sector guy trying to replace one.  And still MUCH better than Coakley, so it was worth the effort.

no, he was voted in because everyone was worried to death about the Democratic radical agenda and would have voted for anyone besides coakley

[ Parent ]
Barbara is right (0.00 / 0)
The Democratic radical agenda made it possible for a Republican to win this seat.  Saying that anyone would have is short sighted.  It took a lot for Scott Brown to win this.

Jack E. Robinson would have failed.
Andy Card would have failed.

Brown's Cross-over (0.00 / 0)
As Michael Savage said today, Brown is just another of the turncoats that New England puts out as RINOs (Snowe, Collins.)  I feel like a fool for having contributed.  At least with Coakley, you knew what you'd get.  I'm disappointed, but it's a lesson worth learning... beware the wolf in sheep's clothing....

But, voters, still, don't learn, which is why we are all in this pro-leftist mess! (0.00 / 0)
But, too many voters, still, don't learn, which is why we are all in this pro-leftist mess together! Too many voters, still, believe that Mitt Romney is really a conservative! Jeez!

He told you exactly what you were getting (0.00 / 0)
the death of ObamaCare and a fresh independent voice...which yes, means he will vote with Democrats sometimes for those of you with reading comprehension issues (which MANY of you have!)

I supported Scott Brown believing (5.00 / 1)
he was a "independent" Republican who would make up his mind on legislation based on how it would affect Massachusetts, not on orders from Republican Leadership.

He has appointed a fine staff to analyze pending legislation and it's affect on Massachusetts, and obviously decided it helps us grow our economy. So he is voting for it, regardless of what the Republican Leadership "ordered him to do".

Good for him.

I don't like unions but MA has plenty of them (0.00 / 0)
I am not a huge fan of unions, but Massachusetts sure has a lot of unions right?  I suspect this job bill does help our state, even if not our country.

Give this man time I say.  He is our 41st vote on a lot of important issues for the nation.  Let others work hard to change our state here at home.

Brown's Vote (0.00 / 0)

Brown could achieve some degree of redemption by offering amendments to clear out some of the more egregious provisions of the bill.  Let me just say that we will be watching.

Watching what? (0.00 / 0)
What reason does Reid have to accept amendments now that he has cloture on his bill?

[ Parent ]
Getting crushed (5.00 / 1)
Scott posted his statement as a status update on Facebook. Man is he getting crushed. 940 comments. Almost all negative. Well, no one could argue that he's a conservative. Well some did. Some tried to paint him as Goldwater II. The man's a Republican from Massachusetts. There's a big difference between that and a conservative. Perhaps there was a little projection going on just like with the previous The One. I think we all thought he was something he's really not. He may be anti-tax, but he's not anti-spend (at least with this vote), which is the more important of the 2.

no amendments need apply (0.00 / 0)
Reid already stated there would be no amendments and Scott voted for it anyway.

Scott f'ing blew it.  It is over.  He might as well vote 'present' for the next two years.  The enthusiasm needed to put him back there in 2012 just left the building.

The shot heard around the world lands as a $15B give-away.  WTF Scott????

Thanks for nothing, Senator Douche Bag.

These Criticisms Are Baloney (0.00 / 0)
Did anybody actually campaign for him?

This is still a Dem state. He never ran as a movement conservative. He ran as a populist. He is conservative, and must represent the will of the people. Sorry, 60% of the population did not become constitutional conservatives overnight.

The state loves him even more. I wached this announcement form a bar in Watertown. Cheers is all he got.

The big thing is that he compromised on a menial matter, and this is menial compared to what is on the docket. Now, he can vote no and no one can call him a GOP hack.

PWNED (0.00 / 0)
The Brown fan page is getting hosed. Close to 2500 comments on his status update with 95% scathing.

Agreed that there is a lot of projection and messiah complex at play here -- but as a longtime supporter it is just so frustrating to see him shoot himself in the foot on literally his first vote.

Whether it is holding hands with a Saudi sheik or bending over to a foreign premiere, or rolling over on your back like a dominated dog in the name of "bi-partisanship" (oh hooray!!) -- nobody can respect you after something like that.

He was sent to D.C. specifically to be an obstructionist -- to stop the grotesque expansion of government.  No one seriously expected him to be Ron Paul 2.0 but come on!  It is like finding out the girl who had been playing hard to get all semester, actually blew the entire football team and basketball team over the summer -- the magic disappears pretty fast.

This just totally took the wind out of his sails, and I don't see him recovering from this.

SECOND vote - he stopped the appointment of Obama appointee to NLRB who wanted to do card check through end run... (0.00 / 0)

Swamp Yankee (0.00 / 0)
there are no Swamp Yankees in Watertown and no Swamp Yankee would cheer this.

It is very hard for me to imagine anyone cheering this. Did he read the bill?  Does he actually think that capital/dollars taken out of the private sector and handed to government are better at creating jobs?  There is neither sound policy nor political strategy behind this. It is simply amateurism.

retraction (0.00 / 0)
I was playing around a bit as the newbie on the specific 'Swamp Yankee' references.  No disrespect was meant by that. I come from a long line of Swamp Yankees so I was compelled to comment on your name.  Again, no disrespect, but I still do think Scott made a major misstep by misreading the symbolism like this.  This was not the way to extend his 15 minutes.

[ Parent ]
He Did Read The Bill (5.00 / 1)
Brown was just on Tom and Todd and was was commenting on how many people made up their opinions before they even read the bill. He is a believer in the business tax credits. He made some good points including the fact that this money has already been allocated. Its a revenue neutral bill.

I would have voted against it. But I dont think anyone rally thought Brown would be a moevement conservative like Jim DeMint. Independents are concerned about jobs. Its better to have Scott Brown reach acorss the aisle on these small bills then compromise on transformational bill like C@T, Health Care, Card Check, Radical Judges, ...

I am not from Watertown. My father and both of my brothers are commerical fishermen from the South Coast.

Not upset at all (5.00 / 2)
Hey, he ran against Washington status quo f-ups, and part of the ridiculous Washington idiocy is the abuse of the filibuster in the Senate.

It was idiotic when it was done by the demmies, and it's idiotic when it's overused by our side.

Hey, you want to filibuster, fine, go for it - but make them actually filibuster - stay standing and debate.  Pee in a cup from the podium, have the minority sleep in cots in the chamber to keep the filibuster going.  And let the country see the dysfunction in living color on CSPAN -- that'll get you a new Senate pretty quickly...

it is patriotic not idiotic (0.00 / 0)
stopping the wealth transfer from earners to Dem political interests is not idiotic. Same can't be said for voting with Reid for the sake of claiming the 'bi-partisan' banner. It was not o.k. when Collins did it and it is not o.k. now.  How many jobs do you think this $15B will create?  1,000?  I doubt it will create even that many -- and those would come at a cost of $15M each.

You think this was a courageous departure from the GOP?  This will be a setback for him.  This is not going to protect his left flank -- the left is smelling blood and getting even more excited about 2012 now.

[ Parent ]
Three hour filibuster? (0.00 / 0)
I get what you are saying about overusing the filibuster for minor bills (try to think of $15 billion as minor for the purpose of discussion). But they were scheduled to begin debate at 2 pm, voted for cloture at 5:30. Couldn't we all be having a more intelligent argument ourselves if the debate had gone on for two days, with some media coverage of that debate before what is effectively the final vote?

[ Parent ]
Bad misstep (3.00 / 1)
This bill largely does not have much if not any value towards economic growth other than as a big payback to the unions. Brown greatly alienated 90% of the people who donated to his campaign to make his victory possible. They gave to him strictly to put an end to the ridiculous spending. This bills falls into that category.

I'm starting to wonder if he does have a messiah complex as mentioned before based on some recent comments and innuendo from recent interviews. As Barbara pointed out, he may think he is "the one" to rise above the polarized partisanship of DC and save them from themselves. Either that or his is angling to be a regular guest on the sunday talk show circuit

Mixed Bag (0.00 / 0)
I will withhold judgement a while longer. This bill realy was a mixed bag. People who figure that we can continue to do nothing about unemployment are neglecting the fact that the government continues to cut these saem people unemployment checks. Rather see people pushing brooms on the highway then sitting home waiting for the mail.

Scott can use this vote as leverage (5.00 / 1)
I think his comments about transparency are setting the stage for "no" votes in the future if the process is not more transparent.  Turn the clocks ahead a bit to another (pick the topic) bill designed behind closed doors.

Harry Reid:  "Scott, you're with us again on this one right?"
Scott Brown:  "Harry, didn't you hear what I said last time about transparency?"
HR:  "Yes but I thought you were an independent voice."
SB:  "I am, and I've shown you that I'll vote with you when a bill makes sense to me.  I voted for the workforce bill DESPITE the lack of transparency.  However, this bill before us today is dead unless you solicit and accept true bipartisan input."

See, so by casting this vote EARLY in his tenure, he demonstrates that he WILL vote across party lines.  He builds a little good will while increasing his personal influence on the agenda.

A steady stream of "no" votes, especially initially, would have him painted with the obstructionist brush and arguably hurt is future viability as an influencer of the agenda.

While I disagree with him on this vote, some times you need to concede a battle to win the war.

Keep it in perspective people.

You may have forgotten after the recent Washington spending spree, but $15 BILLION is still a hell of a lot of our money being spent by the feds.

Honeymoon Over? (0.00 / 0)
Senator brown's vote against Craig Becker was good for the Country. However, his vote for this $15 billion stimulus bill begins to raise some second thoughts. Obviously a Coakley victory would have been a disaster, so I don't regret my support for Scott's candidacy. Let's hope he doesn't buy into the Democrat's sham of bipartisanship being the cure all...because that will truly be a disaster.

People need to chill out, and not over-react... (5.00 / 3)
...looking in your direction, Barbara.

Scott Brown was elected on the platform of being the 41st vote against ObamaCare, not every Democrat-supported proposal.

He was one of 5 Republicans who voted for Cloture.  The vote wasn't even close, and many Republicans didn't even vote.  Either way it was going to pass.

Scott Brown is a Moderate to Conservative Republican.  He's not a Staunch Conservative.  He'll be with Conservatives 80% of the time.  As Ronald Reagan said, "the person who is with me 80% of the time is my 80% Friend, not my 20% Enemy."

This shows Scott is Bipartisan, something Massachusetts voters want.  He IS up for re-election in a Presidential year (2012).

This also gives him cover for when he makes tough, politically (for Massachusetts) unpopular votes in the future.

Scott Brown is never going to have a 100% ACU rating.  I knew that going in on January 19th.  If you didn't, you weren't listening to the words coming out of his mouth during the campaign.

There are going to be more votes like this, hopefully not many, where Conservatives like us will be displeased.  There will also be many votes where Scott Brown will Save Our Bacon.

It was anticipation of those bacon-saving votes that made me cast my ballot for Scott Brown on January 19th.

The Honeymoon may be over, but we will still have a (hopefully) long and happy Marriage.

They like me, they really, really like me!

Chillin' out (5.00 / 1)
All good points, Cool Cal. I did notice that he didn't talk much about the national debt during his campaign, so no use spending too much time right now analyzing this bill's impact on that (Scott says it's revenue neutral. Even if it's not,I guess by the time the debt almost equals our GDP, another $15B hardly matters). So it's the process that is most problematic; he DID talk about transparency. Maybe previous writer is correct, and he can refuse to vote with Reid the next time if the process doesn't improve. I look forward to it.

[ Parent ]
Hey Kev and Paul, I have an idea... (0.00 / 0)
How about a Washington "Independent Thinker" who votes on legislation based on whether it is a good bill or a bad bill??
The "Jobs Bill' is a real bad bill.

That's not a argument, that's an opinion... (0.00 / 0)
...with no supporting evidence.

How is it a "real bad bill."?

Would Scott Brown voting no have changed the outcome?

Is Missouri Senator Kit Bond now a "RINO" because he voted for Cloture?  Is George Voinovich of Ohio?

I'm surprised that you're all surprised Scott Brown is a Moderate Republican.

He said so, repeatedly, throughout the election.

His campaign was three things.

1. Tax Cuts (which, BTW, this bill has)
2. 41st vote vs. Obamacare
3. Terrorists treated as Enemy Combatants, not Civil Defendants.

Scott Brown is NOT Tom Coburn, nor is he Jim DeMint.  He's also not Martha Coalkley.  I'll take Scott Brown over ANY of the Democratic candidates who ran every day of the week, and twice on Sunday. Let's be honest here, so would you.

They like me, they really, really like me!

By the way, he's probably not reading this (0.00 / 0)
Just in case you missed it, Sen. Brown said on RKO this morning that he never reads the blogs. Is this, technically, a blog?

[ Parent ]
Yes, this is a Blog.... (5.00 / 1)
...The biggest, and most widely read in Massachusetts!

They like me, they really, really like me!

[ Parent ]
Great, I always wanted to blog! (4.00 / 1)
But Scott doesn't read the blogs. He said on RKO that he doesn't want to hear about his votes from people who haven't read the bills, either. So who will he be listening to? See, Scott, some of us aren't lawyers or don't have legal staffs to read the bills for us, it helps us to catch both sides of the debate on C-Span then listen to discussion of it on talk radio and read articles about it in the newspapers and discuss it on the blogs, but there wasn't any frickin' debate on this bill, Scott, and God knows the talk show hosts aren't asking you any tough questions today, so how the hell are we supposed to know enough to talk to you about it?

[ Parent ]
I don't disagree that this is a bad bill (0.00 / 0)
As I said in my message, I disagree with Scott's vote on this one.  But he's still batting .667 in my eyes since he's been in office, which it 667 points higher than Coakley would be batting.
