Scott Brown: The National Conservative Disconnect

by: Garrett Quinn

Tue Feb 23, 2010 at 11:44:11 AM EST

While a mostly negative reaction to Scott Brown's vote for cloture on the jobs bill formally known as the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act continues to permeate the conservative echo chamber blogosphere, his Facebook fan page, and on Twitter, and talk radio  the reaction locally is somewhat different.

Brock Cordeiro, a GOP activist and occasional contributor to Red Mass Group, said that people are upset because they did not expect this type of vote so early but "in the grand scheme of things this bill is a small bill and I can see why he voted for it politically."  Cordeiro points out that people projected unrealistic expectations on Brown in thinking that he was "the next Ronald Reagan."

"Let's be honest Scott always said he was a Scott Brown Republican and wouldn't march in lockstep with anybody. Maybe people nationally just kept seeing and hearing '41' and nothing else," he said.

Earlier in the day the Todd of WRKO's Tom & Todd, Todd Feinburg, defended Brown saying "I think it's a good calculation politically and he's created some space for himself." Later in their broadcast Brown called in and defended his vote for cloture. The Tom of Tom & Todd, Tom Finneran, asked Brown how he feels about bloggers describing him as "Bendidct Brown". Brown responded saying "He doesn't read the blogs...and for them to say I sold out to any particular interest group or party is unfair."

Barbara Anderson, executive director of Citizens for Limited Taxation and endorser of Scott Brown during the special election campaign, said "I'm upset but it may not be worth getting too upset until we have more vote to judge him on."

Republican activist Matt Sisk was not surprised by the vote saying "He has shown that he is staying true to his word by looking at each piece of legislation not as a rank in file Republican but as a true independent voice for the working families of Massachusetts."

Garrett Quinn :: Scott Brown: The National Conservative Disconnect
Throughout his Obama-esque campaign Brown didn't project himself as anything other than "a man of the people" and instead created a screen for people to project on. He became this blank canvas for Massachusetts voters where they could paint their frustrations with Washington and Beacon Hill. The general consensus among local GOP activists I talked with during the campaign was that if he ran as a strong conservative he would not have won. One local blogger had harsh words for those who did not understand this fact of Massachusetts politics. In his most recent post on this topic conservative Arron Margolis of Hub Politics wrote, "Do you want to jump ship? Jump ship. You won't be missed. There may be room on the bandwagon when you change your mind, but don't expect a warm welcome from me. Get over it. There will be bigger battles down the road."

Requests for comment were made to Republican State Senators Richard Tisei and Bob Hedlund. Tisei declined to comment and Hedlund could not be reached.

Brown failed his first economics test (5.00 / 2)
This whole concept of not voting in lockstep with Republicans is ridiculous. He was elected to stop the current economic ridiculousness in Washington. He just voted in favor it. Period.

Politically smart? Does that matter when it is economically stupid?

Perhaps the fact that we have seen millions voting themselves into complete dependence on a tyrant has made our generation understand that to choose one's government is not necessarily to secure freedom.

He really is that Cosmo guy (0.00 / 0)
I listened to him on Howie Carr, and he came off as a real arrogant asshole, first claiming that people who were mad at him were confused, and second playing up all the little tax cuts that we don't need (and which won't work) to solve Great Depression 2.

He really doesn't have a good idea of why this happened and what it going on, so he won't have much to offer on how to get us out of this.

Economic effects of this vote (0.00 / 0)
have yet to be played out. There are some good things in the bill that might even spur a little growth. We really need to be objective when it comes to legislation and if there are good things republicans shouldn't be afraid to vote with democrats and not in an attempt to appear bi-partisan but because it's right. Conversely, when the democrats try to do things that aren't good at all, we should give them a good sound thrashing.

He ran to stop the "mess going down there in Washington" (5.00 / 1)
The bill falls into that category. He was sent down there to put an end to the fiscal nonsense and "do-nothing bills" that only waste our money and put us deeper into debt, bailout state's budgets rather than create jobs, and almost insure higher taxes down the road. We the people elected him to do the right thing, not to be politically calculating.

Think of this bill as the first of many series of smaller stimulus (without calling it stimulus) bills at the tune of 15-30 billion each time. Is he going to support another one of these in 6 months? It is so mind-boggling how people can be so easily fooled and blind to what the possible next move is.

I could care less what a bunch of water-carriers/ constant apologists think of Brown's vote and how smart it is politically. Just 6 weeks ago, they were signing Brown's praises of how he was going to be different and not be politically calculating as we are used to seeing with our politicians.

Poor Brock ! (5.00 / 1)
As quoted above  "Brock Cordeiro, a GOP activist and occasional contributor to Red Mass Group,....".  WHAT OCCASIONAL???? Brock is a MAIN thread of many discussions, looked upon by many for his guidance and leadership (ok ..somewhat tongue in cheek in that part) and always a reasonable voice in just about EVERY serious discussion on here.  To diminish his importance by using the word "occasional contributor" will go down as a sad day in Red Mass History!   Brock, please do not be insulted by the fact that the editors do not consider you higher on the food chain! Love you man!

I'm not surprised that Cordeiro is making excuses, since he's constantly defending Charlie Baker against all criticism, regardless of how liberal and/or incompetent Baker/Tisei have proven themselves in the past.

Is it too early to judge Brown "just" on this vote alone? I'd say yes, right now it is too early to make conclusions about how he'll be as a Senator long-term (though he's way off base on this vote). But at a certain point we have to be willing to stop carrying flawed candidates' water and demand a real change in politics as usual.

Cordeiro making excuses? (0.00 / 0)
Apparently you don't know Brock. Most hard working guy i know.

Do you know how many screwy votes the senators and house members make? They always make votes against their so called base. Even the late Ted.

Browns vote is what it is. He voted for a bill we would have  voted against. Nothing more. I'm not expecting perfection. He was bound to make a vote like this.

He voted against cloture the labor board nominee which was more important in the overall scheme of things.

First, you have picked an unusually smart breed of dog, so that is really not a fair comparison.  I definitely think Christy would be better than a Pug or Boxer.

But he is OFB (!!)  Where's the love??

Pathetic (2.50 / 2)
All the die-hard Brown supporters who are now shocked by this sudden revelation of Brown's economically inept approach to politics are pathetic.

The writing was on the wall, it was all over the wall.  This was more than just stopping health-care, there was full blown mania including Brown 2012 proclamations.

How about next time you throw your support behind someone do the research.  This country is in the toilet because of you.

Disgusted! (0.00 / 0)
I voted for him. I volunteered for him. now I feel betrayed. Scott Brown was elected on a platform of the people. Well, "the people" who voted for him did not want this jobs bill! He's a progressive and I missed that.

He is a 'tax sometimes' and spend RINO.

Well, I will now throw my support on whoever runs against him. Martha Coakley is a big government whore but at least she is true to herself and her constituents.

I should have known better from a Massachusetts Republican.

OMG!! (5.00 / 2)
Whatsa matta with people!!??..lol

Did ANYONE think Scott Brown was a hard core Conservative?
YA Knooow... it IS still mASS that he had to get elected in.

So we get a Scott Brown who will probably vote with us on the BIG issues, and he gets to vote his gut on the other issues.

OR....

We get the idiot hack "Marcia" who will stick it to us EVERY f'n vote she can.

RELAX people.......
Scott may NOT be Sen. DeMint, but he's not Arlen Specter either.

Here's the other thing:

Scott Brown will be with us when we need him as the 51st vote.
Scott Brown will be with us when we need him as the 41st vote.

...but he's going to do the politically pragmatic thing when he's the 31st or 21st vote.  Yeah, I would have voted "no" on this bill, but I'm willing to give him some wiggle room when a minor piece of legislation passes more than 2:1 (62-30 in this case.)

People hear what they wanna hear (0.00 / 0)
He got elected because he insisted he'd act independently. He did.

He said he was for tax cuts - there's three in the jobs bill.

Aaron Margolis is right on target.

Independent or more of the same? (0.00 / 0)
Yes, he did say he would think independently, and so what happens? He tows the line.

And to say that this is not an important bill?! This is another bill that includes unfunded spending. Isn't this just more of the same?

Yuk!
