The Circumcision Bill - or should we call it the Michael Morrisey Baby Penis Bill

by: Vote3rdpartynow

( - promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno)

I demand there be a funny name for the bill filed by Senator Michael Morrisey (D-Quincy) on behalf of Charles Antonelli to ban circumcision in Massachusetts.  Maybe it should be the Penis Bill, or the Tool Box Bill, or even the Stimulus Bill.  Perhaps we should give credit where credit is due and call it the Michael Morrisey Little Baby Penis Bill.  What a legacy that would leave Michael Morrisey!  Whatever its called it could only happen in Massachusetts.

Fourteen other states turned down the offer to file this piece of crap legislation that would outlaw circumcision because some nutjob thinks it is genital mutilation on children.  Antonelli says here:

For some reason society feels fit to make surgical amputations to somebody's body without their consent," said Antonelli, 43. "It's really a personal choice. Most people think this is a harmless snip of useless tissue. It's by far not."

No, that's not an abortion he is talking about - those are fine.  Kill the baby before its out of the womb, but don't dare touch it 24 hours later after it arrives.  Especially for religious reasons.  You see, the bill to stop circumcision does not allow an exemption for religious reasons.  So take all those thousands of years of Islam, Judaism and Christianity and just toss them out the window.

Many think the bill will be killed by our legislature:

"It's a terrible idea," said Rabbi Ronne Friedman of Temple Israel in Boston, who feels banning circumcision would trample on religious traditions. He doubted the bill would pass.

The good Rabbi forgets that we live in Massachusetts, where fluffernutter sandwiches make the top ten list of public enemies.  The Rabbi forgets that this state has a long history of breaking new ground with its unique blend of legislative action and utter ignorance.  You could say that Beacon Hill is at the crossroad of 'stupid' and 'law'.  Case in point - gay marriage.  When the GLBT community failed in almost every other state to make legal the marriage of two guys, or two gals, they targeted the liberal community of Massachusetts - 'vuala'.  Massachusetts was a likely target based on its fanatically liberal state supreme court and the fact that the legislature can be bought for a handshake and a cup of coffee.  A little campaign donation here or there and the voters never got a chance to vote on gay marriage, regardless of 170,000 signatures on a legal petition.

I don't know much about this guy Charles Antonelli other than he spends way too much time thinking about newborn baby's penises.  But, he makes clear that he is very concerned about the effect circumcision has on men's sexual sensation.  He is so concerned in fact that he joined the advocacy group known as the "Bill to end genital mutilation", which makes clear what they want to achieve.

I actually think this bill stands a chance of passing in Massachusetts.  Our state legislature loves legislation like this because it serves as an opportunity to stand out from the rest.  It let's them showcase their strong progressive, anti-religious nature for all to see.  It will be a kind of soapbox legislation that will prove too enticing for media hounds in the state senate and house to pass up.  Hopefully debate on this bill will be carried on the state house news agencies for all to see.  With a little luck Deval Patrick will make an impassioned plea for the millions of babies that can't speak for themselves.  You know, one of his fancy 'hopey' 'changey' type speeches.

Anyway, I am glad our legislature is moving quickly on a bill like this.  Once we get this important stuff out of the way then we can move forward with that silly old jobs creation stuff.

How about, 'Michael Morrisey is a complete fuzz ball Bill' ??? (0.00 / 0)
It's catchy

God, Imagine if this catches on? (0.00 / 0)
If this spreads to other states, we may have a new social wedge issue. Pro-foreskin activists going to DC and holding up pictures of circumcisions gone wrong, pro-genital choice groups debating on Chris Matthew's Hardball about how kids can get their learner's permit at age 16 but can't get the genitalia they desire until they're 18.

What a world, what a world.

Everyone's a liberal until they get their first paycheck.

Every session there are dozens of ridiculous bills filed that have no chance of going anywhere. The press loves to find a few random ones, make headlines for a couple of days, and then forget about them.

This bill is ridiculous and it has zero chance of passing.

Why is it ridiculous? (5.00 / 3)

Your attack is very disengenious. (5.00 / 3)
If you don't consider circumcision to be genital mutilation I'd like to hear the reasons why.

This bill bans both female and male genital mutilation.  No reason to single out male circumcision.

We don't know the politics of the person sponsoring this bill.  We don't know his stance on abortion (which is irrelevant).  I could just as easily accuse pro-lifers hypocrisy by fretting over the unborn child's health then allowing that same child's mutilation after birth.

If there was some odd Christian sect that lopped off the right hand of infants, would you reject an effort to ban the practice?  Would you support a ban but allow for a religious exception?

If circumcision is mutilation than............ (2.00 / 1)
certainly cutting the umbilical cord should be banned as well.  The umbilical cord is the nutritional life-support system for the baby.  It won't cut itself - it must be cut by someone else.

Let's also consider a small issue called precedent.  For thousands of years male children have had their penis circumcised.  It is no more traumatic than the actual act of sliding through the birth canal.  Does this clown think that is too stressful for the baby?  Maybe all babies should be born through Cesarean Section in order that our children should not have to endure any pain in life?

Literally BILLIONS of male babies have been born and circumcised and now one small group of penis rights activists wants to change it all.  I don't think so....

If you disagree with me you are a racist homophobe.

Why?

For thousands of years male children have had their penis circumcised.

Which makes it right how?

It is no more traumatic than the actual act of sliding through the birth canal.  Does this clown think that is too stressful for the baby?

Maybe.  How does that make him a clown?

And one other thing.... (2.00 / 1)
For the sake of legal consistency - the bill should have included a total ban on the piercing of ears of children under the age of 16 or 18.  And cutting of hair, fingernails, extraction of teeth, implanting of inner-ear canal tubes, and a hundred other minor surgical procedures performed on infants and children at the behest of the parent or legal guardian.  All of which could be considered mutilation.

Furthermore, I won't entertain your question about some odd Christian sect cutting off the hands of children because it isn't meant to be comparative example, but rather a not so subtle slight against the Christian church.

If you disagree with me you are a racist homophobe.

So VP3N... (4.50 / 2)
What was Morrissey supposed to do, deny Antonelli his rights provided in the MA Constitution (and written by John Adams himself)?   You'd be (rightfully) screaming holy hell if your state rep or Senator denied you this right and refused to file a petition.  But you just want to use Morrissey as your whipping post so you can go on yet another rant about the whacky system we call democracy--which is also protected by the constitution.

Shall we rephrase the question? (2.00 / 1)
170,000 people sign a petition asking for a vote on gay marriage - and the legislature says "NO".  One creepy dude with a passion for penis asks for a bill to outlaw circumcision - and Sen Michael Morrissey steps forward and says "YES".

Why is it that one creep in Massachusetts has a louder voice and bigger representation in Massachusetts than 170,000 normal people?

Of course, you dismiss the obvious answer.  Morrissey could have simply said "I won't be bothered with such matters at this time.  The Legislature has more important things to work out, such as jobs creation, tax relief and economic recovery".  People can say "no" you know.

If you disagree with me you are a racist homophobe.

Wow, you are so wrong on the facts...but maintain your fantasy... (5.00 / 1)
There is something called the Constitution...one provision says any citizen can have a bill filed in the General Court.  This is what happened.

There is another provision that says the Constitution can be amended if a certain amount of signatures are collected AND 25% of the General Court vote to put it on the ballot.  They got the signatures, but could not get 50 out of 200 votes, so they failed.

This is called "rule of law", I understand it is something you have no concept of, but it is how we've operated for more than 200 years.

It's only obvious to you, that Morrissey could simply ignore the Constitution... (5.00 / 1)

got a good reason? (0.00 / 0)
We have a federal law, which protects girls from circumcision.
Male circumcision typically removes half of the skin from the penis.  It takes the two most erotic parts of a male, the frenulum and the inner foreskin, and either cuts them off, or cuts them in half.  Circumcision is thought to remove 75% of the nerves of a penis.
I guess it takes a big man, to cut a little baby, for something which is medically unnecessary, and removes a useful, healthy body part.
You guys are the ones who should be ashamed.  Making jokes out of a baby's agony, and unneeded amputation, should give you pause.
Before you say "I don't remember the pain", does that make it right?  If a girl gets a rufee, and doesn't remember the rape, does that mean it's OK that she got raped?
This bill isn't asking for anything special.  All it's asking for is that we don't make a special protected class of girls, and be able to do things to boys which are illegal for girls, and pets, for that matter.
Give the bill, and the kids, a break.  Circumcision is a violent act.  The scar is a little souvenir of that.
If you want to read a more sensible treatment, go over to myfox.boston.com.  The fur is flying, but they have a lot more reasoning going on, than in this place.
