Does the Manzoli lawsuit remove all chance of Mihos garnering 15% at the convention?

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Thu Mar 18, 2010 at 08:17:59 AM EDT

Christy Mihos' path to 15% at the Massachusetts Republican Convention next month is tenuous at best.  The grapevine had Christy pegged at a support level that was much less than the 15% of delegates needed for ballot access.  The fate of the Mihos campaign at the convention has been in the hands of the Baker campaign for months.

The talk in delegate circles has been whether or not Charlie would release enough delegates for Mihos to reach 15%.  The Baker camp must be weighing the pros and cons of that decision as I type this.  But now, does the surprise announcement of a lawsuit by Joe Manzoli, Mihos' former campaign manager, change the math?

Manzoli had been the one forging the delegate relationships especially in  Central Massachusetts to get Mihos to his 15%.  Since it is Manzoli with many of these relationships given the recent news, will they be loyal to him or to Christy at the convention.  Here is what Manzoli told the Boston Globe.

Mihos's campaign account, on March 15, contained $4,061, and Manzoli says in the lawsuit that placing a lien on Mihos's home "is the only real security I will ever have'' to ensure that he will be paid for his work.

"My situation is very simple, and that is I love Christy, I love his message, and all that good stuff, but sometimes you have to have tough love,'' Manzoli said in an interview. "And that's really what it comes down to. I wish him well in the campaign, and I feel terrible it had to come to this.''

Are you a delegate to the Convention?  If asked by the Baker campaign would you vote for Christy at the convention.

I am a delegate as is my wife. (0.00 / 0)
We were both supporting Christy and know Mr. Manzoli as well. This has soured our taste buds and unless Christy settles this now, we will not be supporting him. My wife isn't even interested in going to the convention anymore.

Tough love is a very accurate statement. Obviously, Christy has some internal issues that either need to be fixed or he needs to drop out, pay what he owes to people, and help the party from the outside.

We the people control our own destiny

Manzoli just torpedoed Christy... (5.00 / 4)
...I think I like Manzoli less than Christy.

I've seen him do some pretty unsavory things in campaigning which aren't illegal in any way, just nasty.

I think that is why there is all this nastiness going around the Republican Gubernatorial Campaign this cycle.

He set the stage for this behavior, and now that he doesn't get paid, he throws the grenade in the Mihos campaign, virtually ending his chances.

If he wanted his money, he could have leined his property at any time...  He could have waited until after the primary or the convention or the election.

This was personal and spiteful.

Getting in the door (0.00 / 0)
How does the Manzoli lawsuit affect Christy's financials?  As your post notes, Christy Mihos only has $4,061 in the campaign account.  Now, we all expect Christy to cut himself a check from his personal account to his campaign account but would any lawsuit make such a thing prohibitive?  Restrictive?  Would a judge look unkindly at loaning yourself money for a political race when you've got outstanding lawsuits?

As I'm neither a lawyer nor an OCPF employee, I really don't know the answers.

I ask this in the context of the candidates fees due from every statwide candidate to the State Party in order to participate in the Convention.

If Christy has $4k in the bank but has to pay out over $10k to play at the Convention...and he has Manzoli & whoever else filing lawsuits... how does he even get in the front door to even need to worry about his 15%?

I suppose that there will be a way, for Christy certainy has the will, but this has got to make a complex situation even more intricate.

Brock--- (0.00 / 0)

As Jim Cramer used to say--"you know nothing"

We have made our campaign available to you and your Rob on so many occasions to either come to the Cape and do a live broadcast or come to Worcester and do it there since October.  You never close the deal on getting together---the other candidate has been on RMG how many times?  Please, show an ounce of objectivity in your posts.  just an ounce would be acceptable
You don't want a primary---questions and issues will have to be vetted.  They will all come out and the sooner the better.  We've had a tough go with the Globe as of late---others will certainly be next.  There is a grand jury in session that will make a difference in this election---the sooner the better.
Having things break in October is a killer.  Get it?

Christy...Have you ever heard the saying. "The whole world cant be wrong"... I understand its an election and some people are willing to lie, to hurt your campaign, and I would have accepted your explanation if it was 1...2...or even 3 people making these claims, but really open up your eyes, your entire campaign has made this accusation about you....They all can't be making up stories, especially Joe, who has stood by you through everything... Stop this train before, you destroy everything you have.

I'll admit it, I was wrong. (0.00 / 0)
I hate to break it to you Christy, but you've never made your campaign available to me.  Perhaps you confuse me with someone else as I'm not a co-owner of RMG, I'm not an editor, and I have nothing to do with RMG other than being an active poster.

You must not read too many posts here as I've long been resigned to the fact that there will be a primary.  Yes, I would've preferred you run for another office - treasurer or auditor perhaps - but that ship sailed a long time ago.

I have no desire to go tit-for-tat with you.  Actually, until you started personalizing your attacks to me I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt.  I suppose you could ask Peter Porcupine, I've tried to be rather even handed towards you despite my preference of Charlie Baker.

The more you blog on RMG, the more you seem to descend into the muck & mire of the campaign.  You seem to excel in making enemies and I'm beginning to understand why.  I used to make an effort to say that my interactions with you have been nothing less than cordial and you've been nothing short of a gentleman.

I'll admit it.  I was wrong.  Perhaps I gave you too much credit.

Oye - you guys make it sound like (0.00 / 0)
No one running in a state primary has had a "legal spat" on the side before.

Convention Percentage (0.00 / 0)

I had predicted that Christy would get 25 percent at the convention.  I don't think this removes all chance of him getting 15%.  I'd say that there is now about a 33% chance that he'll fall below 15 percent and my upper bound for him s 22 percent.  My over/under for Christy is 17 percent.

I also predict that if he does get 15%, he'll drop out after the convention and before the primary.  There's no way he'll want to throw good money after bad as it becomes clear that he's going to take a drubbing in September.  My over/under is that July 16th he suspends his campaign.

I have no inside information nor am I a betting man.  That's just my political crystal ball.

No Chance to Switch Me (0.00 / 0)
As a delegate I don't care who asks me, even Baker himself. I am voting for Baker....couldn't pay me to vote for Mihos.

The Ship has sunk!! (0.00 / 0)
As all of you know I am not a Christy fan, but I do have two close friends who were supporting Christy. They chose to support Christy not because they liked him or his issues but they supported Christy because they liked Joe. Now they feel insulted and, have chosen to vote with Baker, I think there is going to be a lot of this. Joe has been involved in campaigns before and has a good number of friends in the Republican Circle, this is truly the last punch for Christy.

And getting rid of Manzoli has GARNERED other delegates. (5.00 / 2)
Some delegates who supported Christy were so put off by Joe that THEY were considering not coming back from Florida.  These were Beatty supporters who had become disgusted with some of Joe's tactics (Jan from Harwich says 'hi!', Joe).

Manzoli was/is a divisive figure - some personally like him but disdain his tactics. Others feel his tactics are justified, etc.  Point is, the paranoid negativity he generated about the elite being out to get HIM (rarely concerned about the candidate over himself) clouded the CANDIDATE and his ideas and plans.

I would also point out to Rob that the OVERWHELMING majority of delegates are uncommitted, and technically they ALL are as even a pledge to commit is unenforceable by convention rules.  So baker doesn't have to graciosly release anybody.

The delegates make their own decisions - no matter what Team Baker tells them.  Let them decide.

I'd also give BNCordeiro's wife a million bucks if I can join them on their next family vacation.  I'd do anything to sit in the back seat of Brock's car and ask him how much longer, are we there yet, can I go to the bathroom, can we pull over and get an ice cream....

Oh shoot ...I missed the wedding ...gosh please don't tell me that EVERYONE from Red Mass Group went and I didnt get invited ...I hate that! Next thing someone will be talking about his three kids ...I probably missed that too!

Sorry, but... (0.00 / 0)
...1) I'm not married & 2) I rarely drive on vacation.

I prefer to fly to Walt Disney World for my vacations, perhaps take a Disney Cruise out of Port Canaveral, FL or maybe a Carnival cruise out of San Juan.

If I don't take to the friendly skies then it's usually a train to Washington DC.

At worst I might...just might...drive to Six Flags New England.  Even most of my trips into Boston are via the MBTA.

Still not sure .... (0.00 / 0)
Thanks Brock for handling this rumor in such a classy way! (LOL)  There was a bunch of us starting a collection for a wedding/baby gift to try to play catch up and get back in your good graces!  The group WHO WAS NOT invited to the wedding felt it was only right to chip in for a gift, as we all like you so much, even if you didn't invite us.  Umm..ahhh ..maybe it was a secret wedding and she is a secret wife?
