Jeff Perry Roll Call
I have included the roll call from the same piece of legislation in 2009 below the fold....

MY ATTEMPT TO BLOCK PUBLIC BENEFITS FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS (4.38 / 8)

Today, a majority of House lawmakers showed a total lack of respect for law-abiding Massachusetts taxpayers by refusing to consider a measure that would stop giving illegal immigrants benefits from public entitlement programs.

A majority of my colleagues continue to use money from the pockets of legal Massachusetts citizens to subsidize and reward illegal behavior. Later this week, they will further punish those taxpayers by cutting back on basic services provided to them in the state budget, including local aid, public safety, veterans services and public health programs. This is wrong.

Our job as public servants is to protect the taxpaying residents of Massachusetts first. The House failed to live up to that responsibility today.

How is 82 Yeas to 75 Nays a defeat?

I'm assuming the vote was to send it to study (0.00 / 0)
All the Republicans with some Ds voted no to keep it alive.

Yeas were to send the amendment to study.  Effectively kills the bill

In a cosmic way, it isn't Paul - THAT MANY Democrats did NOT vote with their Speaker. (0.00 / 0)

Good Effort Jeff. Outrageous Outcome! (0.00 / 0)
I agree that the House failed to live up to its responsibility with today's vote.  We need common sense entitlement reform in Massachusetts if we are to have any hope of getting our fiscal house in order.  That a common sense reform like this would fail only makes stronger the argument that we need greater political competition in Massachusetts.  Good effort, but never give up!

Sanctuary Cities (5.00 / 1)
Looks like all the reps for the sanctuary cities voted against the requirement Rep Perry included in his legislation.

My rep also voted against it.  Next time I see them I am going to ask why I need to show an ID to get into a State building and go through a metal detector, but you don't need to prove you are in the state legally to receive state benefits.  Makes not sense.

We need more common sense on Beacon and Capital Hill.  Keep up the good work Mr. Perry.

Some Potentially Vulnerable Dem's That Voted The Wrong Way (5.00 / 1)
Geraldo Alicea (D-Charlton) vs. Selectman Peter Durant (R-Spencer)
Jennifer Benson (D-Lunenburg) vs. Kurt Hayes (R-Boxborough)
Garrett Bradley (D-Hingham)
Senate Candidate Katherine Clark (D-Melrose) vs. City Council President Craig Spadafora (R-Malden)
Brian Dempsey (D-Haverhill)
Caroyln Dykema (D-Holliston)
Mark Falzone (D-Saugus) vs. Donald Wong (R-Saugus)
Ann Margaret Ferrante (D-Gloucester)
William Galvin (D-Canton)
Ann Gobi (D-Spencer) vs. Rodney Josephson (R-Barre)
Kate Hogan (D-Stow)
Jason Lewis (D-Winchester)
David Linsky (D-Natick)
Barbara L'Italien (D-Andover) vs. John Thorlin (R-Andover)
Charles Murphy (D-Burlington)
James Murphy (D-Weymouth) vs. Douglas Ness (R-Weymouth)
Robert Nyman (D-Hanover) vs. Jared Valanzola (R-Rockland)
Alice Peisch (D-Wellesley)
Pamela Richardson (D-Framingham) vs. Lori-Ann Turner (R-Framinham)
Rosemary Sandlin (D-Agawam) vs. Selectman Nicholas Boldgya (R-Southwick)
Tom Sannicandro (D-Ashland) vs. David Mercer/Gary Mahoney (R-?)
Theodore Speliotis (D-Danvers) vs. Selectman Dan Bennett (R-Danvers)
Willaim Straus (D-Mattapoisett)
David Torrisi (D-North Andover) vs. Tyler Speck (R-?)

Most of these folks are unopposed, which suggests those that voted against Perry's amendment only did so knowing there would be no payback.

Spadafora is a quality candidate (0.00 / 0)
I spent some time talking to him at a Republican event a month or so ago.  He's really got his act together.  That should be a race the party chooses to target.

Bob Hedlund for Minority Leader.

That's not "most." (0.00 / 0)
You cited 24 legislators. Of those 24, by my count, 13 have opponents.  So, by definition, "most" of them aren't unopposed. ;-)

Also, Carolyn Dykema has an opponent.  Jonathan Loya, a 19-year-old Libertarian.  Who knows, if no Republican successfully pulled papers, perhaps Republicans would be willing to get behind him and support his campaign, since it wouldn't be against the party bylaws.

For everybody else, well, perhaps we could find people to run sticker campaigns for the primary. :-D

Seems like my math was off there....

Could Loya win the GOP Nomination with Stickers?

Don't think he's interested (0.00 / 0)
He's reached out to me a few times on Facebook and it doesn't seem that he has any interest in becoming a Repubilcan, either ahead of time or via stickers.

He does seem willing to caucus with the MassGOP and would certainly not reject any MassGOP local committee support if there proves to be no MassGOP candidate for the race.

I could be wrong as I didn't point blank ask him the question, but based upon previous conversations I'd be very surprised if he were receptive to running on stickers.

Resubmit? (0.00 / 0)
I'm glad to see my representative voted to keep this alive.

What are the chances of cleaning up whatever language the Democrats were worried about and resubmitting this?  It makes sense to pass this, and if all the Dems are worried about is the language, they should vote for it after it's been cleaned up...right?

From the Worcester Telegram & Gazette:

Several critics, however, said the wording in the proposed law was not clear as to which immigrants would be considered to have legal status.

...

Other lawmakers claimed, however, those applying for legal resident status are not considered illegal under the law, while their applications are pending, and that the federal checking system would not draw those distinctions. That they argued would cause lengthy delays and bureaucratic snarls requiring alternative verification steps by applicants.

...

"We don't know anything about the protections relative to the delays, denials, reduction and termination of benefits dependent on INS verifications. We don't know about due process protections or how it will adversely affect highly vulnerable populations," Mr. Sanchez said.

Lack of Consistency or Plain Old Hypocrisy (0.00 / 0)
On the same day the House votes to "study" a bill to require proof of legal status to receive state aid the Boston City Council passes a resolution calling for more stringent residency requirements to attend Boston Latin. http://www.boston.com/news/edu...

I am waiting for all the Boston House members who voted against the Perry amendment to come out against Boston's City Council for this vote.

Rep. Marty Waltz where are you on calling for the Boston City Council to drop these outrageous requirements.  Deval Patrick where are you on denouncing Boston for requiring in City residency to benefit from this great public high school.

It's so much easier... (0.00 / 0)
...to only have to look at how the Speaker votes on an issue instead of wading all the way down to the W's to see how my opponent voted. It works over 99% of the time.

Jeff Perry, A Roll Call , and Enforcing the Law (0.00 / 0)
Jeff Perry's Amendment has less to do with illegal immigration than enforcing the law. If approved the amendment would have caught, eliminated, or chased away significant wasted tax dollars. The Mass General Court, GOV Patrick, and every elected official all admit we are short revenue. Jeff Perry is not making a political statement or trying to embarrass anyone-he is enforcing the law.

Thanks for posting BOTH roll calls (0.00 / 0)
It's important to know which Democrats voted with Rep. Perry last year, before they faced Revolution 2010 and opponents. Challenger/candidates should note this. But the best chance is against those who voted for a SECOND year to "study" the issue.

Carolyn Dykema WILL have a GOP opponent (0.00 / 0)
A woman from Holliston pulled papers about a week before the deadline, and has collected the signatures from what I hear. While she's getting in late, that's an excellent seat for the Republican party. I think if she can get the money together, she has a really good shot, despite the teenage Libertarian.

He won't be a teenager by the election. (0.00 / 0)
He turns 20 in September.  Just saying. ;-)

It is interesting that in his defense of voting against the new measure, Representative Benjamin Swan said "What is happening in Arizona has given our Republicans fodder"  (masslive.com). The Arizona law gives police the ability to question any person based on reasonable suspicion and to find out their citizenship status from the feds, while this law requires citizens who apply for public benefits to show proof of their legal residency. The connection between the two is a drastic stretch that shows how out of touch Democrats who voted against considering this measure are with the Massachusetts taxpayers who have a legitimate interest in preventing government fraud.
