Massachusetts Government: Fining the Innocent

by: Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie

Proverbs 17:15 Acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent- the Lord detests them both.
According to WCVB Massachusetts, in an attempt to take our money through any means necessary, has begun fining innocent people.  To fight a traffic ticket it now costs $25 to be heard by a clerk magistrate and $50 to be heard by a judge.  These fees are just to have the opportunity to fight a ticket.  It is not an additional fee for the guilty.  Alternatively, one could just pay the ticket and accept any insurance surcharges that may come along with it.

This fee is different from normal "fee for service" government activities.  Pay to throw trash bags only apply if you want the government to haul away your garbage.  Registry fees only apply if you want to drive a vehicle on government roads.  These are fees on justice that even apply to innocent people who are already being punished for their lost time and inconvenience.

There is also an inherently regressive nature to these fees.  $50 may not be the end of the world to middle class Americans, but to those struggling each week living paycheck to paycheck it can be potentially devastating.

Luckily these fees are already being challenged in court.  However, they need to be challenged in the legislature as well.

Stating the obvious (5.00 / 1)
I recently got a $25 ticket for parking on a sidewalk. Guilty! Assume for a moment that I was not guilty. It will now cost me $25 to fight a $25 ticket. I take time off from work and have no assurance that I win. I guess I pay the ticket. What a system.

I am so glad that I read this. I am happy again (knowing that its not just me, the whole flipping system is falling apart).
