Sam Meas Volunteers Collect 4,000!

by: Lori

Thu Jun 03, 2010 at 09:44:31 AM EDT

( - promoted by Mike "DD4RP" Rossettie)

HAVERHILL - Sam Meas, candidate for Fifth Congressional District filed more than 4,000 nominating signatures with the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts last week, guaranteeing the State Street Global Advisors Executive a spot on September's primary ballot.  Meas' strong numbers further ensure his status as among the frontrunners in a crowded field.
Greg Page, Field Coordinator for the Sam Meas for Congress campaign acknowledged today that over 4,000 certified signatures had been turned over last week to the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. According to the Secretary of State, the Meas campaign had collected the largest  amount of certified signatures. The total amount of signatures collected for all the candidates are as follows:

Sam Meas  (R)  -  4010
Niki Tsongas (D)- 3617
Tom Weaver (R) - 3285
Robert Shapiro (R)- 2812
Jon Golnik -   (R)     2339
Robert Clarke (U)   - 2156

Lori :: Sam Meas Volunteers Collect 4,000!
"With over 40 volunteers who collected over 5,600 raw signatures from throughout the district, we were overwhelmed by the amount of support Sam received from every corner of the 5th Congressional District," said Greg Page, Meas campaign field director. "We had so many good signatures that the State Secretary's office cut off accepting any more certified signatures from us at 4,010. We had a lot more available. I estimate the percentage of signatures (which were certified from the campaign's raw total) at around 85%. Many of the uncertified signatures came from registered Democrats who knew their signatures would not be counted, but wanted to sign anyway in support of Sam. This support is further proof that Sam's candidacy is resonating with voters in the Fifth District," an enthusiastic Page added."
Page stated that over 10,000 campaign "push cards" had been disseminated by the volunteers while they collected signatures and that dozens of new voters had been enrolled to vote for the first time in their lives. "We didn't need to pay for any of the signatures we collected," remarked Page in reference to campaigns that have to hire professional signature gatherers in order to get their candidate on the ballot.
The candidate himself praised Page for his "outstanding" leadership role in organizing the signature drive. "Greg and his volunteers blew me away with their hard work," said Sam Meas, who is working hard to win the Republican primary in September in order to face down in the November general election Congresswoman "Niki" Tsongas (D-MA), the Democratic incumbent. "I am humbled by all the people who have sacrificed their personal time to help me out," Meas said.
Meas himself had personally collected signatures and, in the process, gleamed first hand the issues which concerned the voters to whom he spoke. "Illegal immigration, the economy, and healthcare were the (issues) which generated the most discussion," observed the Haverhill Republican. "The anger over the status quo is intense. Voters like my positions on those issues and other issues. I've told them all that if they honor me with their vote, I will not let them down. And I won't," said an emphatic Meas.
The candidate was pleased with the gradual growth of his field organization and said he is in the process of intensifying his efforts to raise money. "It remains a challenge to me given how tough the economy is for most voters," conceded Meas. "But given an opportunity to present my case to them, I am confident that primary voters will conclude that I am the best candidate to represent the highest ideals of our district and voters in the general election will equally agree that I will represent their interests and not the extremely partisan interests of (Speaker of the US House of Representatives) Nancy Pelosi and the Washington establishment she represents."
For more information on the Sam Meas campaign, people are encouraged to check out the candidate's website at www.sammeasforcongress.com.

This is great. (0.00 / 0)
While certainly some of the people signed more that one set of papers, this means we probably had over 10,000 people in the MV putting their name down for a Republican Congressional candidate. Step one in showing we matter.

Kudos to the candidates and their volunteers for chugging through this. I saw them all out with their papers as I collected my own signatures.

Special shout out to Mr Weaver who I stood next to on a number of occassions. I think he collected the majority of his signatures personally, and that deserves recognition.

Also a big thank you to Market Basket (if you don't have them near you, they're a great place to shop, based in Tewksbury and a big presence up here) who let us gather signatures in front of their stores. I consider their management great Americans. Big thumbs down to the other chains who refused to let us gather signatures in front of their stores. I am boycotting them (I was already doing that based on prices, so isn't a big inconvenience for me). ;-)

Congrats ... (0.00 / 0)

Congratulations Meas Staff (0.00 / 0)
Those of you that I know worked really hard. I'm sure that I'll meet the others I haven't met yet at a future event. There had to be a bunch of you. SAM MEAS FOR CONGRESS!

Congrats! (0.00 / 0)
But even if those 4010 signers gave Sam a $1 each, he still would have -$2,951 Cash on Hand.

And the fact is, his Republican opponents are not much better.

I want to take down Niki Tsongas as much as the next person (I volunteered hundreds of hours to Jim Ogonowski in 2007 from the start of his campaign to finish), but unless we run complete campaigns like the one Scott Brown did (and which got him only 52% of the vote), Republicans don't win in this state.

I glad to see more encouraging news that solid campaigns are being run, but there is a long way to go before we start talking about seriously threatening Niki Tsongas.

True MM, but Brown had very little cash in December of 2009. (0.00 / 0)
Baker was sucking it all up if you remember. Scott only started raising big $$$ when his campaign went national as the perfect storm was coming together in January, led by that Rasmussen poll, the 41st vote against that Christmas healthcare vote in the Senate, and the debate-the people's seat !!.
I remember seeing people post about the robo calls being made by Romney, not for Brown but for Baker during December. This was telling as not mnay people gave him any shot at all of winning then.

People need to realize that if they want to take back congress, they have to doante to these candidates. Even $10.00 makes a diference as Ron Paul and Obama will tell you.

Money.... (0.00 / 0)
While I get the notion that "even $10 makes a difference" don't be fooled. Congress is a $1M+ race. That's 100,000 people donating $10.

You need to get people to max out to you. Jeff Perry is leading the way in fundraising, with over $300,000. Having negative money gives you less than a 0% chance of winning....especially considering I think Tsongas has like $2M on hand.

I don't think Tsongas has that much money. I thought it was around $400,000. Anyone know ?? (0.00 / 0)

Wow (5.00 / 1)
We might as well stop all of the races and appoint people to positions.  If we had that attitude with anything in life why bother, why try, lets all just live off what the government gives us and be miserable in our little existance.  I think we should let this play out there are 3 months to raise some cash.  And everyone is stepping up to the plate and doing what we can with small donations and time.

Cant Buy a Congresional District (0.00 / 0)
Buying a Boston TV station wont get it done. People know Nikki around here and its way too late for her to try to get an an image makeover.

How do you plan on helping (0.00 / 0)
MM my question to you is how do you plan to help and who do you plan to help.  This is an exciting year for Politics in Mass.  I am helping multiple candidates because I believe in their message.  Mr. Meas message is simple, he listens, he knows the value of hard work and he knows that with the right work ethics you can be anything you want to be when you grow up.  I have met Sam on many occassions and have seen him interact with many people of all races.  He is a true gentleman and a man that will represent us well.  I know what I'm doing to make a difference care to share what you are doing?

Good For You! (0.00 / 0)
I applaud your work and overly optimistic nature.

I have to work, otherwise I'd be out there with you all the time. When I get some free time (should be coming up), Im hoping to help out with some Local Legislative races in my town (Its the first time since 2004 my Reps are even being challenged).

I wish Mr. Meas and all the other Congressional Challengers the best of luck. However, there are better candidates and better chances (in my opinion) that we can flip the State House and State Senate seats here, so that's where I'm going.

Puts in a 12 hour day towards her job. And still finds time to volunteer for Tom Wesley and Ryan Fattman. At least you're not supporting that waste of human flesh Golnik. Sam Meas for congress! Sorry dude, I just can't fathom somebody taking 8 years off from the political process and suddenly wanting to become a congressman.

[ Parent ]
Bill, your comments are way out of line. (0.00 / 0)
It's one thing to disagree with someone and there reasoning. It's another to resort to name calling of that type. You, are doing damage to your own cause when you speak in those tones. Go over to Bluemass Group, they love talking that way.

Paging Senator Steve Pagliuca (0.00 / 0)
You know him: The candidate with the most money running for "The people's seat".
Niki had better have a catchy jingle, otherwise she's sunk. She can't run on her record. Its not good.
Sam Meas: The man is cleaner than a new whistle.
Golnick: Well, there is that 8 year political vacation he took. Yeah, she would run with that first, and shove it down his throat.
Once you meet Sam meas, you can't wait to help elect him.

Your Right (5.00 / 1)
Money alone doesn't win elections.
But nobody wins elections without a little money.

You can't count on a win in you spend more, but you can count on a loss if you don't spend enough.

Congratulations and a Question (0.00 / 0)

Are the totals that you cite for the other candidates the number of certified signatures or raw signatures?

Also, the magic number is 2,000, not 2,500?

Good work on the collection effort!

I just re-read the post. (0.00 / 0)
Meas submitted over 4,000 certified signautes according to the post.  So I am going to assume that all those figures are certified, seeing that it states he collected over 5,600 raw signatures.

The majic number for a congressional district is 2,000.

Statewide offices, including the Senate is 10,000.

Rep districts are 150, state senate is 300

I was (0.00 / 0)
pleased to see a couple cars in Chelmsford with Meas stickers on them.  I'm guessing a few more folks are paying attention in this cycle.

Gary, more people are paying attention than we may think. (0.00 / 0)
I was speaking to some older folks who I ahve known since childhood. They told me they have "unenrolled" from the Deomcratic party and are staying unenrilled. They are sick and tired of what is going on and want to be able to have a choice of who to vote for in the primary

They told me a lot of their friends are tired of being pandered to and treated like their vote is automatic. One woman told me and I quote " Niki thinks she's all high and mighty wearing all those fancy clothes", "she thinks she is better than me". Now those are interesting statements and gives us a little insight into what some of the older generation is feeling.

People are paying attention, the Dems just don't realize it or maybe they are starting to.......

Not just the elderly (0.00 / 0)
Sam has a following of not just the elderly but also the young and tweeners (the 30 to 50 demographics).  Sam appeals to all, every walk of life, he is professional and polished with out being snotty or stuck up. He can sit down and talk with anyone and he is a good listener.  He has a sense of calm about him.  As I have said before, if you have not had a chance to meet him, face book him, check out his web page for a list of upcoming events.  Once you meet him you will see what I am talking about.

I am not saying that Sam is the second coming, far from it, but I believe (my opinion only) that Sam is the best man for the job.
