What Media Bias? Globe becomes Parody of itself.

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Fri May 02, 2008 at 07:33:20 AM EDT

The Boston Globe continues to be a parody of itself.  While the Herald runs with the story of corruption on Beacon Hill in the General Court, the Globe gives the speaker love with it's two major political headlines.  "Mass GOP losing ground" reads a front page headline in the Globe/

n the two election cycles since 2004, as Massachusetts Republicans lost the governor's office, every congressional race they contested, and a net of five seats in the Legislature, it was tough to imagine that things could get any worse for the chronically beleaguered state GOP.

But they have. Measured by its ability to field candidates, the Republican Party in Massachusetts is weaker than ever. While the state's top Democrats have few major legislative victories to point to, despite having a lock on Beacon Hill, Republicans are contesting only 29 percent of the 200 legislative seats in November, according to a preliminary list compiled by the secretary of state's office.

First off as Republicanvoices mentioned the Secretary of State's list is not complete.  Second was this really the top political story of the day. It seems to me that the Globe is running cover for the Democrats, and it's pretty obvious. Finally, we have truly focused on quality this year not quantity.  We will pick up seats.

Secondly the Globe's angle on the DiMasi story is laughable.  Our friends at the boring broadsheet are running cover for Dimasi.  The headline screams "Backers Rally to Speakers Defense."

Key supporters of House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi came to his defense yesterday, seeking to fend off reports that he took legislative action that benefited his friends, while also trying to thwart attempts by representatives plotting to succeed him if he vacates his post.
more stories like this

During a day of political fallout concerning the speaker, little attention was paid to passing a $28 billion budget, and almost all focus was on DiMasi. The speaker, who had quelled speculation earlier this year about his possible departure, found himself again at the center of speculation about his future.

"The speaker has been very clear," Representative Byron Rushing, the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House, said at a press conference yesterday. "He plans to be speaker and serve out his term."

Still, supporters of Representative Robert A. DeLeo, the House Ways and Means Committee chairman, have started compiling a list of supporters in case DiMasi leaves. In response, supporters of the House majority leader, John H. Rogers, have started their own campaign, the members said.

"It's a distraction," said Representative Lida Harkins, the assistant majority leader, speaking at the same press conference. "And the speaker doesn't like it."

If the Globe keeps this up they are going to become more and more a parody of themselves.

It is too bad... (0.00 / 0)
That the DiMasi problems didn't surface a few months ago.

I think we could have used them better to hammer home the problems we get by electing the same people over and over again.

Allow me to carp a little. (5.00 / 2)
Does anyone else think that Brad Jones could have found something a little more helpful to say than "It's tough to say to your family: 'I'm running for office. I fully expect I'm going to lose. Please give up your summer, your time, and send money you'll never get back.' "

The "I fully expect I'm going to lose" part should really motivate those 58 to count on him and the rest of us for help, eh?

In my opinion, the only words out of the House minority leadership's office ought to be "PASS" and "I don't the presence of a quorum."

Maybe if they'd objected to suspension of the rules so that the ticket scalping bill couldn't go through two readings in two minutes, someone would have been able to read the changes and blown the whistle.

EaBo, whining is so unbecoming of you... (0.00 / 0)
When I read the story in the Globe, my first thought was RMG and how someone was going to point the the bias of the Globe for writing this story.

You neglect to mention that the Globe broke three stories that has put Sal into the ethical hot-water and was the bases for the GOP's legal complaint agaisnt Sal.

But that factiod is forgeten when the Globe as the gall to write the simple truth: that the GOP has fielded an anemic legislative ticket.

Poor Eabo, your such a victim.  It's about time that Republicans like you accept responsiblity for the state of your party istead of blaming other people fot the problems you created.

Whining? (0.00 / 0)
Did I miss whining?  Or are you making it up so you could post yet another anti-EaBo rant?

The Globe surely wouldn't replace front page news with anti-GOP "news" (really....THAT's front page news????) to deflect from unethical Democratic behaviors in the Statehouse would it?

Not whining (0.00 / 0)
pointing out that the globe has spun yesterday's news in a pro Democrat way.  You can't really argue with that can you?

I predict we will pick up 2 senate seats and 5 house seats this year.  It's a slow rebuilding process.  But the work we are doing at the municipal level will pay off in the long run.  Oh and Deval and Sal are helping pretty well....

Massachusetts Democrats seem to gloat with the fact that (0.00 / 0)
Massachusetts is a one-party state, for now... You might recall how David Wade, Kerry's press secretary, recently responded to a reporter's question about his Republican challengers. Instead of providing a substantive response to Kerry's GOP opponents, he resorted to making marginal jokes about the Mass. GOP requiring FEMA's assistance.

Now that DiMasi has been attacked in a State House press conference by Chairman Torkildsen yesterday, it was only natural that the Globe should run a story about the Mass. GOP's "dim" prospects on their front page the next day. It seems like that is the best response the left can come up with whenever they are challenged in Massachusetts. They are inadvertently making the case, however, for another Republican renaissance in this state, by making light of our numbers in the Legislature in response to criticism.

The fact is that while we will likely end up with slightly less candidates being recruited than in 2006, the caliber of most of our candidates will be similar to the best of 2004's slate. I apologize in the certain case that I will leave some very worthy candidates out but some names that come to my mind this year as winning candidates are: Longmeadow Selectman William Scibelli - running for the GOP open seat vacated by Mary Rogeness; Attleboro City Councilor George Ross - running for the GOP open seat vacated by John Lepper; former Healey Chief of Staff Dan Haley - running for the GOP open seat vacated by Paul Loscocco; upstading candidates returning from 2006: former State Rep. Susan Pope; Sandi Martinez challenging Susan Fargo for the 3rd Middlesex; Lonnie Brennan challenging Barbara L'Italien for an Essex House seat; and new candidates running for Dem open seats and against incumbents: Walpole Town Moderator, attorney, and former NSA manager John Rockwood challenging Senator Timilty; Marlborough City Councilor Steven Levy running for Pam Resor's open Senate seat; Shrewsbury Selectman John Lebeaux running for Ed Augustus' open Senate seat; Marlborough City Council President Arthur Vigeant running for LeDuc's open House seat; Hudson Selectman Sonny Parente running for Patricia Walrath's open House seat; Littleton School Commiteeman Paul Avella running for Geoffrey Hall's open House seat.

An advantage which the Globe failed to mention which we will have this year is having a much more popular Republican in Massachusetts at the top of the ticket. Jim Ogonowski will also probably aid candidates down ballot, particularly Paul Avella who is running in parts of the 5th district.

Has Jeff Beatty recruited candidates to run for office? (3.67 / 3)
Jim Ogonowski has inspired at least two candidates that I know of to run for office.  The first being Matt Viera an 18 year old YR from Lowell who will be running for City Council next year and the second is an 18 year old in Pelham NH, which while in NH is really part of Greater Lowell who will be running for State Representative.  In fact Jim held a kick-off fundraiser for him to help build the party regionally.

Jim also inspired a many new state committee people to run.  Sheila Richardson, Travis Brown and John MacMillan come to mind.

Just asking?

I'm sorry the people he works with are in their 40's and have experience instead of being 18 yr. olds - just ageist bias on his part.

I wouldn't worry about the Globe..... (0.00 / 0)
If I am not mistaken the Boston Globe circulation numbers were down again for the last six months by 8%.  A recent study showed that the majority of subscribers are now fish salesman and canary owners.

According to my trendlines within two months RMG should have more readers than the Boston Globe.

Globe's self fulfilling Proficy (5.00 / 1)
Of the open seats in Massachusetts since 1990, I am pretty sure the only Republican the Globe has only endorsed was "Dan for Treasurer".

In 2004, they trashed every candidate. When they unveiled the large number of recruits, the Globe started trasihing them immedately.

Just google it, all preserved for posterity!
